ST. LOUIS (AP) – Mark Ellis drove in two runs, including the go-ahead score with a bunt, and the St. Louis Cardinals got a scoreless effort from their bullpen to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 Sunday. The Cardinals have won two in a row and seven of 10. Philadelphia has lost two straight after a season-high five-game winning streak. Ellis broke a 3-all tie with a safely squeeze bunt in the fourth. He added an RBI single in the sixth. He is hitting .193 with 12 RBIs in 41 games.

Carlos Martinez (1-3) allowed three runs over five innings. Nick Greenwood, Sam Freeman, Pat Neshek and Trevor Rosenthal combined for four innings of two-hit scoreless relief. Rosenthal got his 22nd save in 25 chances. Cody Asche drove in all three Philadelphia runs with a bases-loaded double in the second. Kyle Kendrick (3-7) allowed five runs.

Welington Castillo activated from 15-day DL

Sports

June 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have activated catcher Welington Castillo from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday. Castillo missed 18 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. He had a two-game rehab stint with Triple-A Iowa. On the season, Castillo is hitting .242 with five home runs and 21 RBIs for the Cubs.

Cubs manager Rick Renteria did not have Castillo in the starting lineup on Sunday against the Pirates. To make room for Castillo, the Cubs designated catcher Eli Whiteside for assignment. In eight games, Whiteside was 3 for 25 with two RBIs.

Virginia in CWS finals after 4-1 win over Ole Miss

June 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Robbie Coman’s two-run, bases-loaded single gave Virginia the lead, and Josh Sborz and two relievers limited Mississippi to six singles in a 4-1 victory Saturday that sent the Cavaliers to the College World Series finals.

Virginia (52-14), in the CWS for the third time, will go to the championship round looking for its first national championship in baseball. The Cavaliers will play Texas or Vanderbilt in the best-of-three finals starting Monday. The Rebels (48-21) lost to Virginia for a second time in the CWS, ending their first trip to Omaha since 1972.

Sborz (6-4) threw 12 pitches on Friday before a heavy thunderstorm forced suspension of the game in the second inning. He was on the mound when play resumed and worked through the fifth inning. Artie Lewicki took over to start the sixth, and closer Nick Howard worked the ninth for his 20th save.
