Around 10,000 young Iowans, 15 and under, are expected to take part in the state’s youth deer hunting season, which opens Saturday. Jim Coffey, with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says participation in the season has been growing, even though only one-third of those young hunters are forecast to harvest a deer. An adult “mentor” must accompany the child, who can continue to hunt in future deer seasons if they don’t fill their tag in the youth season.
“A youth hunter’s tag is valid for all other deer (gun) seasons if it’s not filled during the youth season,” Coffey says. “So, we’re seeing more hunters shift to buying a youth tag for those youngsters because they can continue to go out and use that license until it’s filled.” The deer must be harvested by the youth with the tag. Coffey encourages the mentors, often the child’s parent, to focus on teaching hunting ethics, sportsmanship, and safety.
“And, realize that success is not harvesting the animal. Success is being out there, watching the woods, learning the animals, and really just starting to build that base of a good sportsman,” Coffey says. The September 20 to October 5 period allows youngsters to be the first Iowans to take a shot at deer.
Coffey says the early season usually features slightly warmer temperatures, so the experience is less stressful for a young hunter. The youth season coincides with the disabled hunter deer season. Last year, nearly 300 disabled hunters reported harvesting 120 deer.

Back from a long trip to Hawaii the UNI Panthers prepare for Saturday’s homecoming contest against Northern Colorado. The Panthers are 0-2 following a 27-24 loss to Hawaii. UNI coach Mark Farley who says the Panthers need to learn how to make plays at key times. There have been many positives in the first two games but the ground attack is not one of them. Senior running back David Johnson has only 80 yards of rushing to date.
Farley says the ground game needs to improve as the Panthers look down the road at the start of Missouri Valley Conference play. Northern Colorado opened with a 13-12 loss at UNLV and followed that up with a 28-20 win over Houston Baptist.

Three weeks into the season the Iowa Hawkeyes rank 92nd in the country in rushing and are tied for 89th in total offense. While those numbers may seem alarming for an offense that returned a number of starters from last year, they apparently aren’t to head coach Kirk Ferentz, who told the weekly Big Ten teleconference that he is not surprised by his teams lackluster start. The Hawkeyes are 2-1 as they get set to visit Pitt and Ferentz says the offense is trying to find the right rhythm and right mix.
Ferentz defended third year offensive coordinator Greg Davis who has been heavily criticized for his love of the horizontal passing game. Ferentz says there is no obvious solutions to fixing the offensive woes. Since beating Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl after the 2009 season the slide to mediocrity has been steep. In the last four plus seasons the Hawkeyes are 29-25 overall and just 15-17 in the Big Ten and while the negativity has grown even louder in the wake of another loss to Iowa State Ferentz says it is something they need to put behind them.
The challenge this week is preparing for their first road test at 3-0 Pitt. Pitt’s James Conner ranks second in the nation with 544 yards of rushing. In his third year at the helm Paul Chryst has developed the Pitt offense into one of the best running attacks in the nation. The Panthers have averaged 344 yards on the ground in their 3-0 start, which ranks fourth in the country. Despite the gaudy numbers Chryst says there is plenty of room for improvement.
Chryst says the run game will get a challenge from an Iowa defense that has always prided itself on stopping the run under Kirk Ferentz.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Gomez walked, stole second and third and scored the go-ahead run on a bloop hit by rookie Hector Gomez in the 12th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers ended the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals’ three-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night.
Brandon Kintzler got the last out in the 11th and Francisco Rodriguez closed for his 42nd save in 47 chances. The third-place Brewers have won five of six and are four games back of St. Louis, which has a 2 1/2-game lead on Pittsburgh with 11 to go.
Gerardo Parra homered and rookie Matt Clark’s sacrifice fly tied it against Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth. The Cardinals were blanked on four hits over the last 11 innings after jumping on Wily Peralta for two quick runs in the first.

NEW YORK (AP) — St. Louis right-hander Yeison Medina has been suspended for 50 games without pay after a positive test for the banned stimulant heptaminol under baseball’s minor league drug program. Medina turns 22 on Oct. 2. He was 4-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 19 relief appearances this year for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals.
The suspension will begin at the start of next season. There have been 57 suspensions this year under the minor league program and five under the big league program.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Chicago Cubs and Triple-A Iowa agreed Tuesday to a two-year player development contract extension that will guarantee the partnership between the two teams will continue through the 2018 season. In announcing the deal, the teams noted it would ensure the affiliation between the teams would stretch to at least 38 years.
The affiliation began in 1981, and the next year Iowa changed its nickname to the Cubs. It’s the eighth-longest current affiliate relationship between a major league team and the 160 minor league clubs.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — This was supposed to be the year that Iowa flourished under offensive coordinator Greg Davis. Three games in, the Hawkeyes look inept. Iowa (2-1) scored just 17 points against Ball State and Iowa State and is just 102nd out of 128 FBS teams in scoring at 21.7 points per game.
What’s troubling about those numbers is the Hawkeyes basically brought back their entire offense, and Davis is now in his third year calling plays for Iowa. Coach Kirk Ferentz reiterated his support for Davis on Tuesday as the Hawkeyes prepare for their toughest test yet, a date with unbeaten Pittsburgh (3-0) on Saturday.
