KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were such a mess in their season opener against Tennessee that some people were quick to write them off, their dramatic turnaround last season merely a fluke. After steadily improving over the first few weeks of the season, the Chiefs earned a marquee victory on Sunday when they rallied for a 23-20 victory in San Diego — not only knocking off one of the league’s hottest teams but taking a big step toward the top of the division.
Now, they face a schedule that starts with the Rams and Jets at Arrowhead Stadium, a chance to pick up a couple more wins before the schedule gets difficult again.

Iowa pheasant hunters should see more of what they came for, as they step into the field this fall. More pheasants. The Iowa DNR says a strong rebound in August roadside counts of Iowa’s most popular game bird has buoyed expectations, heading toward the October 25 opener.DNR pheasant biologist Todd Bogenschutz says “We have the best pheasant numbers since 2008. People are telling me that more birds are flushing; that they are hearing more crowing and cackling out there.”
Counts this summer averaged 17.4 pheasants per 30 mile survey route, up 151 percent from last year’s 6.9…an all-time low. Of the nine regions monitored, eight had increases ranging from 102-290 percent. Only northeast Iowa showed no change.
Bogenschutz says drought conditions across the past two summers probably kept pheasants in the fields on August mornings, rather than pushing up to road edges, to escape heavy dew. That may have kept many from being tallied on the 200 gravel road routes surveyed. Hunters harvested 10,000 more pheasants in 2013, despite the record low counts.
Bogenschutz predicts “The best habitat will hold birds; good winter cover, good nesting cover, too. Hunters should be happy hunting those areas, over just decent nesting cover.” He suggests hunters conduct their hunts around the best habitat, and urges hunters to “Talk to the farmers where you will be hunting. Ask what they have seen while harvesting the crops.”
With a better bird outlook, the numbers of hunters should climb, too. Last year, only 41,000 pheasant hunters were in the fields. Early in the season, standing crops are going to be a factor. Bogenschutz says “Harvest is running a little behind. The season is starting a couple days earlier, too. That could be a challenge for hunters, until the corn is out. Our counts were up; hens with broods were way up. There will be a lot of young roosters, who aren’t wise to the ways of the wild, yet.”
Hunting hours for Iowa’s pheasant seasons are 8 a.m. until 4:30 each day. The daily limit is three rooster pheasants. The season closes on January 10th.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal field goal with 21 seconds left and the Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego 23-20 Sunday, snapping the Chargers’ five-game winning streak. The Chiefs moved into field goal range thanks to Alex Smith, who completed three straight passes on the drive for 43 yards, including a 29-yarder to Dwayne Bowe.
Smith was playing on the same field where he led Helix High to consecutive San Diego Section championships. Coming off their bye, the Chiefs (3-3) made the AFC West a three-team race, pulling within 1 ½ games of San Diego (5-2). The Denver Broncos (4-1) hosted San Francisco on Sunday night.
The Chargers flunked their sternest test in a month and lost for the first time since a defeat at Arizona in the season opener.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) —Melvin Taveras intercepted a Brion Carnes pass at his 3-yard line to seal a 31-28 South Dakota State win over Northern Iowa. Kicker Justin Syrovatka made a 44-yard field goal with 1:47 left to play and was perfect on four PATs. His game winning kick helped the Jackrabbits notch their first FCS win at UNI.
SDSU (5-2, 2-1 MVFC) led 28-14 with 8:58 to play after scoring 21 straight points. But UNI (3-4, 1-2) got a 2-yard TD run by David Johnson and minutes later a 58-yard interception return for a score by Ray Mitchell with 3:29 left to tie it 28-28.
Johnson, who ran for 78 yards for UNI, scored on a 50-yard run and Barkley Hill caught a 2-yard TD pass to give the Panthers a 14-7 halftime lead. UNI’s Sawyer Kollmorgen and Brion Carnes were 20-for-35 for 178 yards. But they were intercepted three times.
