ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins and running back Fred Jackson are listed as active against the Kansas City Chiefs today (Sunday). Watkins is the Bills’ leading receiver and is playing despite missing two straight practices after hurting his groin Wednesday. Jackson returns ahead of schedule. He was expected to miss four weeks after hurting his groin in a 17-16 win over Minnesota on Oct. 19. With Watkins playing, receiver Mike Williams is inactive for the second time in four games.

For the Chiefs (5-3), linebacker Joe Mays is listed as active a day after being taken off the team’s short-term injured reserve list. Mays has been on IR since training camp, when had wrist surgery.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have activated linebacker Joe Mays from short-term injured reserve and waived linebacker Jerry Franklin ahead of today’s (Sunday’s) game in Buffalo. Mays has been on IR since training camp, when he needed surgery on his injured wrist. He returned to practice Oct. 29, at which point the Chiefs had three weeks to activate him. How much he’ll play for the Chiefs (5-3) against the Bills remains to be seen.

Inside linebacker Derrick Johnson is on IR after tearing his Achilles tendon, so Josh Mauga and James-Michael Johnson have been starting. Mauga leads the Chiefs in tackles. Franklin had been serving as a backup and played primarily on special teams.

N. Iowa stuns N. Dakota St. 23-3

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Northern Iowa kept three-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State out of the end zone and handed the Bison their first loss, 23-3 on Saturday.

The loss snapped North Dakota State’s 33-game winning streak, the longest in Football Championship Subdivision history. It also snapped an 18-game Missouri Valley Football Conference win streak. The loss knocked the Bison (9-1, 5-1) into a first-place tie with Illinois State atop the MVFC standings. Northern Iowa (6-4, 4-2) pulled into a tie with Youngstown State for second place.

David Johnson rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries to lead Northern Iowa. Brion Carnes finished with 43 yards, including a 6-yard run for a first-quarter touchdown. David Miller scored on a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

North Dakota State finished with just 175 yards of total offense and was just 1-for-14 in third down efficiency.

Kansas spanks Cyclones 34-14 for rare Big 12 win

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Michael Cummings threw for 278 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, Corey Avery ran for 103 yards and another score, and Kansas beat up Iowa State 34-14 on Saturday for just its second Big 12 win in the past four years. Tony Pierson added 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Nigel King had 101 yards receiving as the Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) raced out to a 24-0 lead in the battle for the basement.

Iowa State put together a pair of touchdown drives to make the game interesting, but the Jayhawks answered with inspired play by their defense and just enough offense.

The victory ended the Jayhawks’ four-game losing streak to Iowa State (2-7, 0-6), and may go a long way toward helping interim coach Clint Bowen earn the full-time job. He’s already matched the number of Big 12 wins that Charlie Weis and Turner Gill managed during their brief tenures.

Rice leads Drake past Dayton 34-30

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) – Andy Rice threw three touchdown passes, including a go-ahead 13-yarder to Michael Hudson with 18 seconds left to lift Drake to a 34-30 victory over Dayton on Saturday.  Will Bardo connected with Ross Smith on a 20-yard score which gave Dayton (6-3, 4-2 Pioneer) a 30-20 lead early in the third quarter. Conley Wilkins’ 8-yard touchdown run pulled Drake (6-4, 5-2 Pioneer) within 30-27 late in the third.

Dayton drove 91 yards to the Drake 7, but William Will missed a 24-yard field goal with 8:20 to play. Drake answered with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by Rice’s game-winning throw to Hudson. Rice threw a 10-yard TD pass to Hudson and an 84-yard strike to Andrew Yarwood in the second quarter.

T.J. James led Drake with 117 yards rushing and Wilkins ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Dayton’s Connor Kacsor rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams, Minnesota rip Iowa 51-14, to reclaim pig

Sports

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Maxx Williams caught three of Mitch Leidner’s four touchdown passes, and Minnesota ran for 291 yards in a romp past Iowa 51-14 on Saturday afternoon to retake the Floyd of Rosedale trophy after a two-year absence.

The Gophers (7-2, 4-1) smothered the Hawkeyes for a season-low 84 yards rushing and swarmed the visitor sideline when it was over to hoist the heavy bronze pig the teams have played for since 1935. They moved back into a first-place tie with idle Nebraska in the Big Ten West Division, with a road game against the Huskers looming in two weeks. Wisconsin is a half-game back, and the Gophers finish this grueling month with a trip to play the Badgers.

The Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-2) opened the game with a short touchdown run by Mark Weisman, one of three third-down conversions during that 76-yard drive, but they just rolled over right after that.
