Drake suspends 2 for improper benefits

Sports

November 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake seniors Gary Ricks, Jr. and Karl Madison have each been suspended for three games by the school for accepting improper benefits. The school says Ricks and Madison received the benefits in 2012-13, when they played under former coach Mark Phelps. They’ll miss Drake’s first three games, starting with Friday’s opener against Bowling Green.

Athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb says the school launched an internal review. She says Ricks and Madison “worked diligently” to resolve the issue. Ricks is the team’s leading returning scorer with 12.3 points a game last season. Madison averaged 2.2 points a game in 2013-14.

Food prep criticized at Kansas City stadiums

Sports

November 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A food safety manager says dirty conditions and poor food handling endangered customers at Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums in Kansas City. A city health inspection prompted by the allegations found dozens of critical health code violations at the stadiums.
ESPN first reported the allegations from Jon Costa, the food safety manager for Aramark, which runs concessions at the two stadiums and at sports venues across the country.

Costa said he found such things as cockroaches and mouse feces in food-service areas and foods kept at unsafe temperatures. The city health inspection on Nov. 3 found mold in ice machines and dirty equipment. Aramark spokesman Tod MacKenzie said the claims come from a disgruntled employee, even though he was responsible for managing food safety at the stadiums.
