Conlan, former KC Chief Thomas, inducted into College Hall of Fame

Sports

December 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Shane Conlan and Derrick Thomas, two of the most dominant college linebackers of the 1980s, are part of a class of 14 former players and two coaches being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in New York. Thomas had 27 sacks and won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker in 1988 before going on to a successful NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was paralyzed in an automobile wreck in 2000 and died from complications about a month later. He was 33.

Conlan was a two-time All-American. He had two interceptions in his final college game as Penn State upset Miami 14-10 in the Fiesta Bowl to win the national title. The rest of the class is highlighted by TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson, South Carolina receiver Sterling Sharpe and Southern California tackle Tony Boselli.

No. 14 Iowa State beats UMKC 73-56

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Bryce Dejean-Jones scored 22 points and No. 14 Iowa State beat Missouri-Kansas City 73-56 on Tuesday for its third straight win. Dejean-Jones topped 20 points for the third time for the Cyclones (6-1), who’ve won 25 straight non-conference games at home.

The Cyclones opened on a 24-9 run, powered by 11 early points from Dejean-Jones. They led by as many as 21 points in the first half. Monte Morris scored 13 points with five assists for Iowa State, which let UMKC (3-7) get within 11 midway through the second half before pulling away.

Frank Williams had 14 points for UMKC (3-7). The Kangaroos have lost three straight.

White, Iowa pull away from Alcorn State 67-44

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa started slow and never found the outside shot. The Hawkeyes eventually sped up the pace and pulled away from Alcorn State. Now their attention can shift to their in-state rival. Aaron White scored 15 points and Iowa overcame a sluggish first half in a 67-44 win over the Braves on Tuesday night. The Hawkeyes (8-2) have won six straight games heading into Friday’s showdown with No. 14 Iowa State.

“Our guys are playing well together,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “Very unselfish team, sharing the ball, rebounding the ball, not turning it over. Do that, you’ve got a chance.” Jarrod Uthoff scored 13 points and Gabe Olaseni added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who have won 31 consecutive nonconference home games.

Leantwan Luckett scored 12 points for Alcorn State (1-6). The Braves shot 33 percent from the floor. White, who has scored in double figures every game this season, made 9 of 10 free throws. The senior is shooting 87.7 percent from the foul line this season on a Big Ten-leading 73 attempts. The Hawkeyes opened the game like their focus was already turned to Friday’s home game against Iowa State.

Iowa took 16 minutes to build a double-digit lead. The Hawkeyes missed seven straight field goals during one stretch and shot 1 of 6 in the final two minutes before halftime. Iowa shot 38 percent in the first half. The Hawkeyes tightened up their defense in the second half to get easier buckets. Iowa put together a 17-2 run during an eight-minute stretch where Alcorn State didn’t hit a field goal. The Braves missed 10 straight shots. “It’s just one of those games where we had to play our tempo and not theirs,” guard Mike Gesell said. “We did a better job in the second half.”

Iowa struggled from outside, tying a season-low by making only 3 of 19 attempts. Peter Jok, coming off a career-high 15 points on four 3-pointers against Maryland-Baltimore County, hit only 1 of 5 3s against Alcorn State. Josh Oglesby misfired on all five of his attempts. Alcorn State wasn’t any better. The Braves failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time all season, missing all eight attempts.

Chiefs’ Eric Berry diagnosed with cancer

Sports

December 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and will begin chemotherapy for what doctors called a “very treatable and potentially curable” form of cancer. Hodgkin’s disease is a form of lymphoma originating in white blood cells.

Berry had been undergoing tests at Emory University in Atlanta since an MRI exam nearly two weeks ago showed a mass on the right side of his chest that was suspected to be lymphoma. Berry said in a statement that he will “embrace this process and attack it the same way I do everything else in life. God has more than prepared me for it.”

The former All-Pro safety has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
