Bourjos’ legs help Cardinals beat Phillies 5-2

Sports

April 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Peter Bourjos hit a game-tying RBI triple, then scored the go-ahead run by beating the throw home on an infield tapper to fuel a four-run fifth inning in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed two runs in six innings and Matt Adams doubled twice with an RBI.

Ryan Howard hit his 20th career homer against St. Louis, 11 coming in his hometown, and Odubel Herrera had two hits and an RBI. Aaron Harang (2-2) surrendered five runs in six innings, ending a career-best run of eight consecutive quality starts dating to last September. Bourjos entered 7 for 15 against Harang with a homer and four RBIs, no doubt factoring into his second start considering he was just 1 for 10 on the season.

Local nonprofit disputes St. Louis Cardinals lawsuit

Sports

April 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The president of a youth baseball charity being sued by the St. Louis Cardinals over alleged scalped tickets says it has used funds properly. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Nicholas Mahrt, president of the Lewis & Clark Baseball League disputed the baseball team’s allegations Tuesday, stating money involved in the ticket transactions was used for charity. Last week, the team filed a lawsuit against the nonprofit accusing it of breaching a contract and committing fraud by selling hundreds of tickets over face value.

The Leagues of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which runs the charity, last year was allotted 3,500 tickets at a discounted price through the team’s Cardinals Care program. The suit claims the charity sold tickets for high-demand games online, instead of selling them for up to face value in fundraisers to support youth baseball.

The lawsuit seeks to recover $40,475 in profits.

Hawkeye baseball team wins in 18 innings

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The 15th ranked Iowa baseball team won another extra-innings game Tuesday, this time downing Sacramento State 4-3 in 18 innings. The Hawkeyes used extra innings to win one of their games in a three-game weekend sweep over Nebraska. Rick Heller’s team has put in a lot of work in a short amount of time after weather forced them to play a single game Saturday and a double-header with the Huskers Sunday.

“It’s tough to deal with in the early part of the weekend and obviously that’s always a stressful situation when you are the home team trying to make those tough decision on when to play,” Heller says. “And ending up having to play three nine-inning games in a 24-hour period is never easy, and for our guys to find way to beat Nebraska three times and not have a let down in any of those games says a lot about our team.” Heller says they were expecting to get back to normal with the single game Tuesday.

“Thinking you are going to have a nice single game on a beautiful night against Sacramento State turns into 18 innings and a lot of stressful innings during that one. But that one was extras special to be able to win that, if you play 18 innings, you certainly don’t want to lose it,” Heller says. Iowa had to come back a couple of times to win the game.

“If you keep playing the game, the game usually comes back to you in some way. When you just give up and let down is when you are beat, and this team just doesn’t give up,” Heller says. “It isn’t just recently that that’s been happening. We had some games early in the season where we hung around and came back and won, and I think that’s important in your first 10-15 games to win some games like that.” Iowa has had some injuries to key players, but also has had some come back and start to round into form, such as junior Jimmy Frankos.

“He’s just now three-quarters of the way into the season back into shape where he is turning into his old self. It was nice to have Jimmy swinging the bat well against Nebraska and he ended up being the co-conference player of the week. Getting some added punch from him has really helped,” Heller says. “Dan Potempa has had a good stretch — same thing with him –he got off to a slow start. He was an all-Big Ten D-H last season. Dan is really starting to swing the bat a lot better.” The extra-inning win moves the Hawkeyes to 31-11 overall. They return to conference action Friday afternoon with the start of a three-game series at Michigan.

Iowa State’s Naz Long To Have Second Hip Surgery

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Jim Field

Iowa State guard Naz Long will have arthroscopic surgery performed on his right hip on Thursday, May 7. The surgery will replicate the previous procedure that was performed on April 1 on his left hip, alleviating chronic pain that worsened throughout his junior season. The surgery will again be performed by Dr. Bryan Warme at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames and the recovery time is expected to be 3-5 months.

Iowa State men’s basketball athletic trainer Vic Miller says that Long’s recovery from his first surgery has went well.

“Naz is ahead of schedule on his recovery from his first surgery on his left hip and our hope is the second hip will respond in the same way,” Miller said. “Naz was so strong going into the first surgery, which always helps in a recovery.”

Long looks forward to getting the surgeries behind him and becoming an even bigger threat on the court.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to where I was and being able to do things from a mobility standpoint that I haven’t been able to do,” Long said. “I’ve been lifting for two weeks now and they tell me I am ahead of schedule. I’ve been blessed with a good body, one that has allowed me to heal faster. I’m excited to get this second surgery behind me.”

Long, a Mississauga, Ontario, native, started 33 of 34 games for the Cyclones in 2014-15. He averaged 10.1 points and hit a team-high 77 three-pointers. Long’s 2.3 three-pointers per game was second among Big 12 players.

Chiefs sign team president Donovan to contract extension

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs and team president Mark Donovan have agreed to a contract extension. Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed. Donovan spent six years with the Eagles before joining the Chiefs as their chief operating officer in 2009. He was promoted to president two years later.

Donovan has been instrumental in updating the fan experience at Arrowhead Stadium, creating new membership programs, implementing new technology and building the season-ticket base. He has also helped to bring several events to the Chiefs’ stadium, including numerous college football games and concerts involving the Rolling Stones and Kenny Chesney.

Before joining the Eagles, Donovan spent several years working as the NFL’s senior director of sales and marketing. He also worked for the NHL and in the private sector.

Cardinals pound Phillies 11-5, Wacha stays unbeaten

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter tripled and doubled, and the St. Louis Cardinals had season highs in runs and hits to help Michael Wacha remain unbeaten with an 11-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. Matt Holliday and Matt Adams each added three hits for the Cardinals, who finished with 15 hits. Jason Heyward reached base four times and Jon Jay drove in two runs.

Wacha (4-0) drove in two runs and pitched 5 2/3 innings to win for the fourth time in four starts. Severino Gonzalez (0-1) yielded seven runs and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut. The Cardinals reworked their batting order and it paid off. Carpenter was moved out of the leadoff spot for the first time in nearly two years and, batting second, tripled and scored in the first inning and added an RBI double in the fifth.

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 28 points and the Houston Rockets advanced to the NBA’s Western Conference semifinals for the first time since 2009 by downing the Dallas Mavericks 103-94. Terrance Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the final period and helped the Rockets stay ahead after the Mavericks got within three with five minutes remaining. Dwight Howard had 18 points and 19 rebounds for Houston, while Josh Smith delivered 20 points.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have grabbed a 3-2 lead in the NBA’s Western Conference quarterfinals by downing the Clippers 111-107 in Los Angeles. Tim Duncan had team highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds to help the Spurs win their second straight in L.A. since dropping the series opener. Blake Griffin hit a short jumper that would have given the Clippers a 109-108 lead with about five seconds remaining, but the basket was waved off by an offensive goaltending call on DeAndre Jordan.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The rioting in Baltimore is prompting the Orioles and Chicago White Sox to play Wednesday’s game in what is believed to be the first contest without fans in major league baseball’s 145-season history. The unrest caused the first two games of the Orioles-White Sox series to be postponed and will lead the Birds to play their three-game weekend series against the Rays at Tropicana Field instead of Camden Yards. Schools were closed Tuesday and the mayor imposed a 10 p.m.-to-5 a.m. curfew following Monday’s riots a few miles northeast of Oriole Park.

DETROIT (AP) — Former Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson has announced he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The 1988 National League MVP was hired to broadcast Tigers games for Fox Sports Detroit after being fired as manager of the Diamondbacks last September. He had not been in the broadcast booth since opening day April 6 while undergoing tests.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Washington Nationals pulled off Tuesday’s best major league comeback by turning a 9-1 deficit into a 13-12 win over the Braves in Atlanta. Dan Uggla (UHG’-lah) capped his five-RBI performance by belting a go-ahead, three-run homer with one out in the ninth. Jose Lobaton (LOH’-bah-tohn) also smacked a three-run homer, and Denard Span was 5-for-6 with a solo shot and four runs scored to help the Nationals end a six-game losing streak.
