When Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads looked at ways of bouncing back from a second straight disappointing season he began in the locker room. Rhoads worked to rebuild the chemistry on the team after last year’s 2-10 record that included a winless Big-12 mark. Rhoads says the effort paid off and it is one of the reasons he is confident the Cyclones will make major strides this season.
How much the Cyclones improve may rest with the development of the offensive line as well as a thin and inexperienced corps of running backs. Rhoads says another key will be how the Cyclones handle adversity. He’s confident the Cyclones have the talent they need to get back to a bowl game.
The Cyclone offense will be led by senior quarterback Sam Richardson, who is preparing for his final season in a Cyclone uniform. Richardson says after a long off season the Cyclones are ready to get on the practice field.
The opener is at home on September fifth against UNI.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Michael Wacha gave the Cardinals’ tired bullpen a respite by throwing seven innings in the rain on Thursday afternoon, and St. Louis pulled away to a 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, taking yet another series from its NL Central rival. The Cardinals improved to 30 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2013 season. They have the best record in the major leagues at 69-39.
They took two of three in Cincinnati and have won 15 of their last 18 series together. The Reds were shut out for the last 18 innings. St. Louis pulled out the second game of the series on Randal Grichuk’s homer in the 13th inning for a 4-3 win on Wednesday night. Wacha (13-4) overcame a 68-minute rain delay at the start of Thursday’s game, and then gave his used-up bullpen a rest.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa wrestling team will host Oklahoma State in the first NCAA match to be held in a Division I football stadium. The Hawkeyes will face the Cowboys on Nov. 14 at Kinnick Stadium for Grapple on the Gridiron, an effort to break the record for the largest crowd for a single match. It’s currently held by Penn State at nearly 16,000. Iowa’s football team will host rival Minnesota in Kinnick later that day.
Iowa announced the event on Twitter, saying that they were “excited to introduce Cowboy Wrestling to Hayden Fry Psychology” while posting a picture of Iowa’s pink visiting locker room. Fry was Iowa’s football coach from 1979-98.
The Hawkeyes and Cowboys have a combined 57 national titles.
The Board of Regents gave the University of Iowa approval to move ahead with planning and designing for renovating the north end of Kinnick Stadium, building a residence hall near the stadium and the construction of a new indoor track-and-field facility west of Finkbine Golf Course. The U-I’s Planning and Construction Director, Rod Lehnertz, says the project could range from 135 to 150 million dollars. It starts with the stadium upgrade.
“The north end zone itself was constructed in the first half of the 1980s and is obsolete by its function, but also the intent by the athletic department is to improve amenities, fan amenities,” Lehnertz says. The plans could include the dormitory near Kinnick Stadium that could include some 600 suite style rooms and will be home to athletes and regular students. Lehnertz says the will know more details now that they have approval to proceed.
“This is a project where we are asking for permission to proceed with planning and we’ll advance the efforts to design and estimate and bring it back to you with more defined information,” Lehnertz says. Board of Regents president Bruce Rastetter says its not easy approving something with such a large price tag, but he says the improvements an new facilities are important, especially the renovation at the stadium.
“The north endzone wasn’t updated through the renovation, and so I think it’s natural to have that happen to continue the support of the program at a high level and to continue the enjoyment of the fans watching the game,” Rastetter says. He points out that the renovation will be paid for by donations and funds from the athletic department, not through state dollars.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Matt Carpenter tied it with a solo homer in the eighth, and Randal Grichuk connected in the 13th inning, rallying the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. Grichuk was moved up to second in the Cardinals’ struggling batting order. He doubled home a run in the sixth inning and hit his 15th homer in the 13th off Dylan Axelrod (0-1), Cincinnati’s eighth pitcher. Seth Maness (4-1) gave up a pair of walks in two innings.
Manager Mike Matheny changed the batting order — Grichuk went from batting eighth on Tuesday to second — to try to spark his struggling offense, but the Cardinals didn’t get much going until late in the game. Left-hander David Holmberg allowed two runs, including Grichuk’s RBI double off the top of the wall in center that cut it to 3-2 in the sixth.
Carpenter tied it with a homer in the eighth off J.J. Hoover, only the third that the reliever has allowed this season. It was Carpenter’s fifth homer in his last six games.
The Friday tee times are set for the the first round of the 57th Annual Tournament of Champions at the Atlantic Golf & Country Club. In all, 84 golfers are set to compete in three divisions, 52 in the Championship Division, 21 in the Senior Division and 11 in the Super Senior Division. A total of nine past champions of the tournament are registered, including Chris Nelson of Atlantic who won the 2014 championship and John Holmes of Atlantic, the 2014 Super Senior champ. The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce says everyone is invited to come out and help Salute Gymnastics celebrate new, future location this (Wednesday) evening. Their new facility is located at 314 Walnut Street, in Atlantic, where a ground breaking ceremony is set to take place at 5:30-p.m.
The new building will be 7,500 square feet and will feature a pro shop, kitchenette, parent viewing area, and plenty of space for all of their gymnastic equipment. 
Henningsen Construction will begin putting the footings in place on August 17th, and the project is expected to be completed in 2-to 3-months.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Anthony DeSclafani handled the St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight start, striking out a career-high nine, and the Cincinnati Reds turned a big first inning off John Lackey into a 3-2 victory Tuesday night. DeSclafani (7-7), the most experienced member of Cincinnati’s all-rookie rotation, gave up seven hits and two runs in six innings. It was his second straight impressive start over the NL Central leaders.
Last Wednesday in St. Louis, DeSclafani gave up only three hits in seven innings of a 1-0 win. Aroldis Chapman fanned two in the ninth — his fastball topping out at 101 mph — for his 23rd save in 24 chances. The left-hander has converted 56 consecutive save opportunities at Great American Ball Park since his last failure in September 2012.
