ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey was dominant into the ninth inning and gave the St. Louis Cardinals an unexpected bonus with two hits and an RBI in a 6-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. Mark Reynolds’ three-run home run in the sixth put the Cardinals ahead by four and Randal Grichuk hit his 15th homer in the first. Rookie Stephen Piscotty had three hits and scored twice, helping the Cardinals win their eighth out of 10.

Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 and now has 4,193 career hits between the major leagues and Japan, surpassing Ty Cobb’s total that ranks second in history. Lackey (10-7) allowed two runs on nine hits in 8 1-3 innings to reach double figures in victories for the 12th time in 13 seasons — the exception being 2012, which was lost to injury. He has been especially good at home, going 8-3 with a 1.91 ERA. Brad Hand (2-3) allowed six runs on 11 hits in six innings.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona’s Carson Palmer was flawless in a brief appearance, Kansas City backup Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns and the Chiefs beat the Cardinals 34-19 in the teams’ preseason opener Saturday night.

Palmer, in his first game since tearing an ACL last Nov. 9, was 4 for 4 for 77 yards, directing a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start the game before sitting down for the night. Palmer threw over the middle to Andre Ellington on a 57-play to highlight the seven-play, 80-yard scoring drive.

Arizona’s Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Alex Smith’s pass on the Chiefs’ first possession to set up a field goal to put Arizona up 10-0. The Kansas City reserves scored the next 31 points. Daniel was 17 for 29 for 189 yards in less than two quarters of play.

Iowa turns to Daniels at running back

Sports

August 15th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa will finally have a running back starting at running back this fall. After three years leaning on converted fullback Mark Weisman, the Hawkeyes intend to make junior LeShun Daniels Jr. their starter in 2015.

Iowa, which has typically tried to build its offensive philosophy around a strong running game, is hopeful that Daniels can be its first player to rush for over 1,000 yards since Marcus Coker in 2011.

The Hawkeyes open their season Sept. 5 against Illinois State.

Garcia, Carpenter team up to lead Cardinals over Marlins

Sports

August 15th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning and Matt Carpenter homered, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Miami Marlins 3-1 Friday night. Garcia (5-4) came within two outs of throwing the first complete game of the season for the NL Central leaders. He gave up six singles, walked one and struck out six. Trevor Rosenthal got his 36th save in 38 chances.

Carpenter’s bunt single broke a scoreless tie in the fifth. He hit a solo home run in the eighth. Tom Koehler (8-10) took the loss and Miami’s three-game winning streak ended. Ichiro Suzuki singled in the Miami fifth for his 2,913th hit in the major leagues. Combined with 1,278 hits in Japan, he equaled Ty Cobb’s total of 4,191. Cobb held the big league mark that Pete Rose eventually passed on his way to a record 4,256 hits.

Chiefs Could Sit Several Ailing Players in Preseason Opener

Sports

August 14th, 2015 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs could be forced to rest a handful of players in their exhibition opener Saturday night in Arizona because of nagging injuries picked up during training camp.

Linebacker is the position where they are most banged up. Former first-round pick Dee Ford is still out from a concussion, Josh Mauga left practice Wednesday with a bum heel, D.J. Alexander is hobbled by an ankle injury and James-Michael Johnson by a calf injury.

That means rookies Ramik Wilson and Justin March could get considerable time.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid plans to play starters in the first quarter, the second unit in the second quarter and into the third, with the rest of the reserves finishing the game.

Jeremy Maclin says he hopes to play after missing two practices this week with a neck strain. Fellow wide receiver Albert Wilson is also questionable with an illness.

Sophomores must play big for Hawkeyes

Sports

August 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A key to success for the Iowa offense this season may rest with the development of two sophomore tackles. Webster City native Boone Myers and Ike Boettger from Cedar Falls have been called on to replace Outland Trophy winner Brandon Scherff and Andrew Donnal. Iowa offensive line coach Brian Ferentz says both players just need experience.

Ferentz says like any other position group it will be up to the seniors to lead the way. He says the switch to C.J. Beathard at quarterback will have little impact on the offensive line. Originally recruited as a tight end, Boettger gained 60 pounds to make the transition to right tackle. Boettger believes as a unit they will be ready for the season opener.

The Hawkeyes open at home on September fifth against Illinois State.
