Senior Mike Gesell scored a game-high 24 points to lead the University of Iowa men’s basketball team to a 99-73 exhibition victory over Sioux Falls on Thursday on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes shot 49.3 (34-of-69) from the field for the game and made nine 3-pointers in 21 attempts. Iowa scored 44 points in the paint, had 32 points off of 18 Sioux Falls turnovers, and had a 49-34 rebounding advantage. Jordan Mayes led a trio of Cougars in double figures, scoring 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Iowa shot 52 percent from the field and 56 percent from the 3-point line in the first half, but turned the ball over 12 times.

Hawkeye fans issued warning about Halloween costumes at Kinnick

Sports

October 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A lot of Iowa Hawkeye football fans are planning to celebrate Halloween at Kinnick Stadium tomorrow (Saturday), but they’re being warned some costumes and items won’t be allowed. The 10th-ranked Hawkeyes kickoff against Maryland at 2:30 in a nationally televised game. Many in the expected sellout crowd will attend in costume, but UI director of public safety Dave Visin says people donning some outfits won’t be allowed in Kinnick Stadium.

Those include authentic looking law enforcement or security guard uniforms and authentic player or game official uniforms that could be mistaken for an actual player or referee. In addition, Visin says no “simulated weapons or other props” will be allowed. He adds whether or not a costume meets safety requirements will be up to the sole discretion of law enforcement.

No. 10 Iowa gets back to work against Maryland

Sports

October 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa got the rest it so desperately needed last week. The 10th-ranked Hawkeyes are now ready for their final push toward the Big Ten West title, starting Saturday against an opponent that could soon be playing for little more than pride.

Iowa (7-0, 3-0) hosts Maryland (2-5, 0-3) after a bye week that allowed it to get healthier than it’s been in a while. Quarterback C.J. Beathard leads a long list of Hawkeyes who used the time off to recover from injuries. Maryland made progress last week, but still lost to Penn State 31-30.

Texas faces slumping Cyclones in search of 3rd straight win

Sports

October 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Charlie Strong has Texas trending upward. Paul Rhoads is looking to get Iowa State moving in a similar direction — and keep his job in the process. The Longhorns (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) have won two straight, including a victory over Number 14 Oklahoma, to vault back into contention for a bowl bid ahead of Saturday’s visit to Iowa State.

The Cyclones (2-5, 1-3) have dropped three in a row against teams currently ranked first, second and fifth in scoring offense. The losing streak has led to big changes, as offensive coordinator Mark Mangino parted ways with Rhoads just hours before sophomore Joel Lanning was named the new starting quarterback.
