AMES, Iowa (AP) — Abdel Nader scored 21 points, Jameel McKay had 15 to go with a career-high 19 rebounds and fifth-ranked Iowa State beat North Dakota State 84-64 on Tuesday night
Monte Morris had 18 points and six assists for the Cyclones (6-0), who overcame a sluggish outing to post their fifth straight win by double digits.
The Bison made things tough on the Cyclones for about 30 minutes. But Iowa State’s 13-2 run midway through the second half ensured its 30th straight non-conference win at home.
A.J. Jacobson and Paul Miller each had 17 points to lead North Dakota State (4-2).
Oklahoma is No. 3 in the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings, putting the Sooners safely in position to be in the final four with their season completed. The Sooners locked up the Big 12 championship with a blowout victory at Oklahoma State on Saturday.
Clemson is still No. 1 and Alabama remained No. 2. Both the Tigers and Crimson Tide head into their conference championship games Saturday needing just a victory to lock up a playoff spot. The top seed gets to play closest to home, so for Clemson a semifinal game at the Orange Bowl in Miami is also on the line against North Carolina.
Iowa is No. 4 and Michigan State is No. 5, setting up a playoff play-in game in Saturday’s Big Ten title game.

The Iowa Wresting coverage website thepredicament.com released their preseason wrestling rankings on Monday. You can follow the links below to check out the top ten team and individual rankings in Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A.
The Atlantic Boys Basketball team will get started on a season with lofty goals tonight at home. The Trojans play host to Winterset to start the 2015-2016 campaign at 7:30pm tonight at the Atlantic High School.
The Trojans hope to improve on a 2014-2015 campaign that saw them finish 12-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Trojans finished in a second place tie in the Hawkeye 10 Conference standings. They also saw their season come to a close sooner than they had hoped with a close loss in District play to Glenwood 70-69. The Rams went on a hot streak to make it to the 3A State Tournament after that win. The Trojans have sights on trying to do that themselves this season.
The Trojans return many key contributors including Senior Forward Ryan Hawkins who was an All State and Unanimous First Team All-Conference honoree. Hawkins is a versatile player that can handle the ball and shoot from the outside but also post-up on the block. Hawkins is slated to play the 4-spot for the Trojans this season and recently signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Wayne State College in Nebraska.
Hawkins will be joined in the starting lineup by All-Conference Second Teamer Garrett Franken, who is going to start the season at the Point Guard position. Franken also brings versatility to the floor because he can handle the ball and shoot the long ball, while his size at 6’7″ allows him to score inside and get rebounds. All other anticipated starters bring at least some experience with them: Sophomore Austin Alexander and Senior Kyle Nelson are expected to play the 2 and 3 spots, while Sophomore Scott Leonard will fill the post. Senior Brendan Holmes will come of the bench to start the season as the sixth man and is expected to log significant minutes as well.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston appears to have a strained ligament in his left knee, though the team is still awaiting MRI exam results to determine the severity of the injury. Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Houston would be examined later in the day. He was hurt during the first half of Sunday’s 30-22 victory over Buffalo when he tripped over a teammate.
Houston sustained a similar injury a playoff loss to Indianapolis two years ago. The All-Pro pass rusher had 22 sacks last season, which earned him a six-year, $101 million contract this past offseason. He has 7 1/2 sacks through 11 games. Kansas City (6-5) has won five straight heading into Sunday’s game in Oakland.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Penn State’s Carl Nassib is the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year in a vote of coaches and media. Nassib leads the nation with 15 1/2 sacks and six forced fumbles. The 6-foot-7, 272-pound senior from West Chester, Pennsylvania, started his career at Penn State as a walk-on.
Other award winners: Joey Bosa, Ohio State, defensive lineman of the year; Joe Schobert, Wisconsin, linebacker of the year; Desmond King, Iowa, defensive back of the year; Griffin Oakes, Indiana, kicker of the year; Sam Foltz, Nebraska, punter of the year; Will Likely, Maryland, return specialist of the year; Jabrill Peppers, Michigan, freshman of the year.
The Big Ten announced only its defensive honorees Monday. The offensive award winners will be announced today (Tuesday).
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Bennett Koch scored 18 points, including 8 of 10 at the free throw line, to help lead Northern Iowa to a 93-70 win over North Texas on Monday night. Matt Bohannon scored 16 points, Jeremy Morgan had 15 and eight boards, and Wes Washpun added 12 and seven assists for the Panthers (5-1).
Northern Iowa has won five straight by an average of 20.6 points after an opening night loss to Colorado State. North Texas led 43-41 after a back-and-forth first half. But a pair of free throws by Klint Carlson followed by a Koch dunk gave Northern Iowa a 52-49 lead four minutes into the second half, a lead which they did not relinquish.
The Panthers pieced together a 27-9 scoring run over 10 minute stretch which extended their lead to 22 (84-62) and put the game away. J-Mychal Reese led North Texas (2-4) with 19 points.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Free agent catcher Brayan Pena has agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he will be the backup for All-Star Yadier Molina. The 33-year-old switch-hitter receives $2.5 million in each of the next two seasons.
Pena led Reds catchers with 86 games last season while batting .273 with a career-best .344 on-base percentage. His led the NL with a .999 fielding percentage, making one error in 715 chances.
Pena has a .260 career average, with 23 homers and 164 RBIs in 629 games over 11 big league seasons. He spent the last two years with the Reds and has played for Detroit, Kansas City and Atlanta. Tony Cruz had been Molina’s backup in recent seasons.
