CHICAGO (AP) — Milton Doyle scored 13 points and Montel James made a crucial 3-point play in the final seconds as Loyola of Chicago upended Northern Iowa 59-56 on Wednesday night.

Northern Iowa’s Paul Jesperson drained three 3-pointers early in the second half to put the Panthers on top 38-31. The Ramblers fought back and James converted a 3-point play for a 55-54 lead with 44 seconds remaining.

Earl Peterson made two free throws with six second left for a three-point lead. Loyola elected to foul and Northern Iowa missed both free throws but the ball went out of bounds off of the Ramblers. UNI missed a shot at the buzzer.

Donte Ingram added 10 points for the Ramblers (13-14, 6-9 Missouri Valley Conference). James, Peterson and Devon Turk had nine points each.

Jesperson finished with 16 points for the Panthers (16-12, 8-7), who had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Exira-EHK wins playoff game, stays unbeaten

Sports

February 17th, 2016 by admin

The Exira-EHK Girls Basketball team hosted the Griswold Tigers in a Regional Quarterfinal on Tuesday night in Elk Horn and the Spartans had little trouble advancing to the next round and keeping their undefeated record intact.  The Spartans forced 11 first quarter turnovers and raced out to a 12 point lead by the end of the quarter en route to a 64-41 win.

The Spartans got 17 points from Sophomore Sophia Peppers, 15 from Junior Mara Burmeister, and 12 apiece from Kealey Nelson and Rose Andersen.  The Spartans uncharacteristically only hit four three point shots during the game but controlled the offensive glass off many of their long range misses.

Griswold was led by Sophomore Mateya Peters with 10 points in the loss.  The Tigers finish the season at 9-13.  The Second-Ranked Spartans improve to 21-0 and will move on to host Sidney on Friday night at 7:00pm in a Regional Semifinal.

Sports

WACO, Texas (AP) — Johnathan Motley scored seven of his 27 points in overtime and No. 25 Baylor defeated No. 13 Iowa State 100-91 on Tuesday night, ending a three-game home losing streak for the Bears.

There were 14 ties and 14 lead changes in the game that began with both teams having identical records. The final lead change came with 3:19 left in overtime when Lester Medford hit a 3-poitner from the left wing to put Baylor (19-7, 8-5 Big 12) up 87-84. After Deonte Burton missed badly on a 3-pointer, Taurean Prince had a bounce pass to Motley for an emphatic two-handed dunk.

Terry Maston had 15 points for Baylor, while Medford, Prince and Al Freeman all had 14. Motley, who scored 27 points in the teams’ first meeting, had 10 rebounds. The Cyclones (18-8, 7-6) had three 20-point scorers: Abdel Nader with 26, Georges Niang with 24 and Monte Morris with 20. Burton had 14.
