February 1st, 2016 by admin

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have fired coach Jeff Hornacek, with the team mired in one of the worst stretches in franchise history.

The Suns announced the dismissal Monday, saying an interim coach would be in place by Tuesday.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press three assistant coaches would be interviewed Monday for the interim job. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans had not been announced.

Hornacek coached the Suns for 2 ½ seasons. His team had lost 10 of 11 games and 19 of its last 21. At 14-35, their record is tied for fourth worst in the NBA. Hornacek is a former star at Iowa State University and had a successful NBA playing career with the Suns and Utah Jazz.

Sports

February 1st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

HONOLULU (AP) — In a Pro Bowl that pitted Team Michael Irvin against Team Jerry Rice, it was only fitting that the two teams would combine for 10 receiving touchdowns and over 800 passing yards. Russell Wilson threw for 164 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as Team Irvin rolled to a 49-27 victory over Team Rice. Once Wilson left, Teddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston each threw for over 100 yards and two scores for Irvin’s squad.

Allen Robinson and Delanie Walker each hauled in touchdown receptions of more than 50 yards in the third quarter to put Irvin’s team well in control. Rams running back Todd Gurley caught a pass for a 10-yard score for Team Irvin. Travis Kelce, of the Kansas City Chiefs was the busiest receiver on Team Rice, grabbing five passes for 91 yards and two TDs.

Southern Illinois (18-5, 7-3 Missouri Valley) was paced by Anthony Beane with 16 points and Sean O’Brien with 14. Northern Iowa closed the first half with a 12-4 run — including a 3-pointer and pair of free throws by Bohannon — to forge a tie at 29. Midway through the second, the Salukis went 4:26 without scoring while UNI built a 10-point lead, which it nursed down the stretch.
