IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell and Shayla Cooper each scored 20 points and seventh-ranked Ohio State blasted Iowa 98-81 on Thursday night for its eighth straight victory.

Ameryst Alton had 18 with six assists for the Buckeyes (20-4, 12-1 Big Ten), who also won in Iowa City for the first time in eight years. Ohio State had little trouble with the reeling Hawkeyes (15-10, 5-8), pushing a 14-point halftime lead to as much as 23 late in the third quarter.

Ally Disterhoft had 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Iowa, losers of three straight and six of eight.

Senate moves bill ahead on concussions

News, Sports

February 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

State lawmakers concerned about concussions among high school athletes moved a bill forward in the Iowa Senate Wednesday to make it harder for coaches to put an injured player back in the game without proper rest or evaluation. There’s growing concern about the impact of untreated or repeat concussions on athletes from the amateur to the professional level. Senator Tod Bowman, a Democrat from Maquoketa, says his son was removed from a wrestling match his junior year for a concussion.

“My son wanted to return to action. That’s the constant battle coaches face where athletic trainers or other medical personnel have a little different perspective in life moving forward,” Bowman says. Bowman says the trainer was present when his son was knocked out during the match and settled the issue about whether he would continue.

“And she immediately evaluated him and said ‘you’re done son,’” according to Bowman. The Senate bill would require a professional trainer to evaluate injured players at varsity competitions for the so-called collision sports of football, soccer and wrestling. The trainer would also notify the school’s athletic director if an athlete from a visiting team suffered a concussion.

Trainers who attended the statehouse hearing told of coaches putting star players back in the game. Skeptics wonder if there would be enough athletic trainers in the state to staff every varsity event — for example, on a Friday night when hundreds of teams are playing across the state.

Fifth ranked Iowa visits Indiana tonight (Thursday)

Sports

February 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa basketball team has not won the Big Ten Conference regular season title since 1979 but the fifth ranked Hawkeyes could take a big step toward ending that dry spell, tonight, when they visit Indiana. The Hawkeyes have sole possession of the league lead with a 10-1 record and visit a Hoosier team that is a game back at 9-2. Defense will be a key. Indiana averages 84 points per game and is shooting 51 percent from the field.

The Hoosiers are 13-0 at home this season. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery says Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell is one of the top point guards in the country and sets the table for his teammates. Iowa won in covincing fashion last year in Bloomington 77-63 but McCaffery says that will have no factor on this game.

It will be an 8:05 p.m. tip off in Assembly Hall. You can hear the game on KJAN, beginning at 7-p.m.

Iowa’s Adam Woodbury silences critics

Sports

February 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — To his detractors, Iowa’s Adam Woodbury is often viewed as the blue-chip recruit who never lived up to expectations. Those who’ve watched Woodbury closely in 2015-16 would argue that he’s developed into one of the more underrated players in the Big Ten.

Woodbury, a 7-foot-1 senior, is among a handful of Hawkeyes whose career years have helped push the program into the top five in the rankings. Woodbury is averaging a career-high 8.5 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds a game, with four double-doubles in his last seven outings while guiding a resurgent defense.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Zach Smith made two free throws with 18 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Texas Tech past Number 14 Iowa State 85-82 Wednesday night. It was the second straight year the Red Raiders beat the Cyclones in Lubbock. Last season, Iowa State was ranked ninth.

Deonte Burton scored a season-high 20 points and Abdel added 19 points to lead Iowa State (17-7, 6-5). Fans stormed the court after the victory. Aaron Ross scored 20 points and Devaugntah Williams added 19 to lead Texas Texas (14-9, 4-7).

Iowa State built leads several times — in each half — only to watch the Red Raiders claw their way back. Two free throws by Smith in separate two trips to the free-throw line tied it at 78 at the end of regulation. The win gave the Red Raiders one more Big 12 victory than they had last season.

Iowa State loses WR Montgomery, RB Thomas

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State wide receiver D’Vario Montgomery and running back Joshua Thomas won’t return to the team for next season.

The Cyclones say Montgomery has been dismissed for violating team rules. Thomas intends to transfer to another school.

Montgomery was fourth on the team with 27 receptions for 335 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Thomas ran for 295 yards as a freshman. But the rise of Mike Warren, who led all freshmen nationally with 1,339 yards in 2015, likely played a role in Thomas’s decision to leave.
