Miller gives Missouri State 59-58 win over Northern Iowa

Sports

January 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Dequon Miller’s layup with five seconds left lifted Missouri State to a 59-58 victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday night, snapping the Bears’ four-game losing streak.

Ryan Kreklow made three free throws, two with 42 seconds left, to cut Northern Iowa’s lead to 58-57. After the Panthers struggled to get the ball upcourt, calling two timeouts, Klint Carlson missed on a baseline drive. Kreklow got the rebound and Miller raced down the floor and scored before the Panthers’ Wes Washpun missed a short jumper at the buzzer. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak to Northern Iowa.

Chris Kendrix scored 17 points to lead the Bears (5-10, 1-2 Missouri Valley). Obediah Church added 10 points and eight rebounds. Washpun and Matt Bohannon each had 15 points for the Panthers (9-7, 1-2). The Panthers never trailed in the second half until Miller’s winning basket, leading by 10 with 9:17 remaining.

Matt Van Scyoc scored 13 and Khristian Smith 10 for the Sycamores (8-7, 2-1 Missouri Valley). Brown scored 20-plus for the sixth time this season.

Indiana State led 46-26 at the half and pushed its lead to a high of 22 as the second half started. Drake, which made 14 second-half shots after hitting nine in the first half, stormed back with an 11-0 run that cut the lead to 56-52.

Kale Abrahamson ended the run with a 3-pointer and C.J. Rivers made back-to-back baskets after a defensive rebound and a steal by Nick McGlynn. Jacob Enevold led Drake (5-10, 0-3) with 14 points. Rivers had 13 and Abrahamson 11.

Chiefs’ Justin Houston plans to play vs Texans on Saturday

Sports

January 6th, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston confirmed Wednesday that he plans to play in Saturday’s wild-card game in Houston, his first game since hyperextending his knee in November.

The All-Pro pass rusher did light work last Friday but was not active for Sunday’s regular-season finale against Cleveland. He’s been practicing this week with a brace on his knee.

Houston acknowledged that “I definitely got some rust to knock off.” But his return should be a boon for the Chiefs, who have had to make do without their best pass rusher for the past five games.

Fellow pass rusher Tamba Hali is also expected to play. He returned last week from a broken thumb but only played 14 snaps against the Browns.

In front of a nearly full crowd at the Atlantic High School Gym the Harlan Cyclones topped the Atlantic Trojans 57-50 in boys hoops Tuesday.  The Cyclones took control of the game early as they raced out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 13 points by halftime.  Ethan Knudson led the charge in the first half with 10 points.

Harlan started strong again in the second half scoring the first two baskets of the half and extended their lead to 44-29 by the end of the third quarter.  Atlantic made a strong push in the 4th quarter led by 9 points in the period by Ryan Hawkins and got as close 5 points in the final minute but Harlan made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.  Caled Rassmussen made 7-10 from the stripe in the fourth quarter and the Cyclones were 9 of 14 for the quarter.

Three point shooting also played in a big part in the Cyclones win as they knocked down 8 threes in the game.  Caleb Rassmussen lead the Cyclones with 16 points and Ethan Knudson finished with 14.  The Trojans were lead by Senior Ryan Hawkins who finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds.

The two teams will meet at least one more time this season on February 2nd in Harlan.

Iowa State tabs Heacock as new Defensive Coordinator

Sports

January 5th, 2016 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell tabbed an experienced and familiar face for his defensive coordinator in Jon Heacock, Campbell announced today.

Heacock, who will also coach the Cyclone safeties, has 32 years of coaching experience, serving as a head coach at Youngstown State (2001-09) and defensive coordinator stints at Youngstown State (1992-96, 2000), Indiana (1997-99), Kent State (2011-12) and Toledo (2014-15).

Heacock held the title of Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator at Toledo from 2014-15, shaping the Toledo defense into one of the best units in the Mid-American Conference. In his two years at UT, the Rockets appeared in a pair of bowl games, won 19 games and shared two MAC West Conference crowns.

In 2015, the Rockets were ranked in the AP Top-25 for most of the season and were at the top of the MAC defensive statistical categories, ranking No. 1 in scoring defense (20.8) and second in rushing defense (114.2). Five Rocket defenders earned All-MAC accolades, including a pair of first-teamers in Orion Jones (defensive tackle) and Cheatham Norrils (cornerback).
