Hawkeyes rested and ready for stretch run

Sports

February 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The eighth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes control their own destiny as the Big Ten race heads into the stretch run and if the Hawks are able to win it they will have earned it. Iowa faces four difficult games to close the regular season beginning with Wednesday night’s game at home against a Wisconsin team that has won eight of its last nine games. The Hawkeyes are 11-3 in the Big Ten and have been idle since last Wednesday’s upset loss at Penn State.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says while focused on what they need to accomplish it is only natural for the players to follow how the other contenders are faring. McCaffery says the week off gave the Hawks a chance to work on all aspects of defense.

Iowa is 20-6 overall. Tip off in Carver-Hawkeye Arena is 8:00 p.m. You can hear the game on KJAN beginning at 7-p.m.

February 23rd, 2016 by admin

IKM-Manning High School will host Class 1A District 14 Semi-Finals tonight and we will have coverage on KJAN.

The first game of the night will be the season rubber match between Exira-EHK and Paton Churdan at 6:30pm.  The Rockets won the first game of the season against the Spartans 65-59 on December 1st. Sophomore Joe Tower led the way in that opening win with 22 points.  The second meeting was played on January 8th and the Spartans edged out a 46-45 win as Drew Buckholdt dropped in 15 points.  The two teams will settle the score tonight as they try to advance to the District Final on Thursday night.

The second game will feature the Audubon Wheelers against the IKM-Manning Wolves at 8:00pm.  The Wolves swept the Wheelers during the regular season posting a 63-46 win on December 8th in Audubon and a 74-63 win on January 19th in Manning.  The Wheelers will try to make the third time the charm coming off a big win over Glidden-Ralston to get to this game.  Sophomore Tyler Riebhoff is hitting full stride at the end of the season and had a monster game with 28 points in the Wheelers’ win over the Wildcats in the quarterfinals. IKM-Manning is led by Senior Kyle Wagner who is averaging 22 points per game.  He led all scorers in both of the previous contests with 27 and 22 points.

We’ll have pregame coverage starting at 6:20pm tonight before the first game. Join Chris Parks and Seth Christensen for the broadcast on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the mobile app.

Atlantic, Glenwood advance in Boys 3A District 16

Sports

February 23rd, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team got their postseason off to a great start with a 59-39 win over Winterset.  The Trojans raced out to a 23-7 first quarter lead with patient play on the offensive end and great shooting.  The Trojans got a great game from Sophomore Scott Leonard who led all scorers with 21 points.  Leonard was able to take advantage of the Huskies Triangle and 2 defense by posting up on the block behind the post defenders that were drifting up in the lane and his teammates kept getting him the ball in great position to score.

AtlanticvsWintersetBoys02222016Ryan Hawkins also chipped in 14 and Garrett Franken had 9 points in the runaway win.  With the win the Trojans advanced to the District Final which will be played Thursday night at 7:00pm at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School.

The Trojans’ opponent in that game will be the Glenwood Rams after they posted and emphatic 76-38 win over Creston in the second half of the doubleheader.  Glenwood used some pressure defense to fluster the panthers early and were efficient on the offensive end. Sophomore Andrew Blum led all scorers with 25 points and Freshman Christian Stanislav added 14.  Glenwood had a commanding 52-18 lead by Halftime and cruised with a running clock to a win in the second half.

Once again the Class 3A District final will be Atlantic vs. Glenwood on Thursday at 7:00pm at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School.  We will have coverage here on KJAN and online.  Pregame will start at 6:50pm.
