(Toldeo, Iowa) – The Tama County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two asphalt crew scams, including one that led to a homeowner’s injury. The Tama County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning on social media to residents about a fraudulent scam involving asphalt crews. The sheriff’s office responded to two incidents in the past day.
A homeowner was injured when they confronted the individuals who then ran away. The sheriff’s office stated in a Facebook post, “We respect the many legitimate asphalt companies that serve our area. This message is not about them. It is about protecting residents from individuals who mislead, overcharge, or cause harm. If someone offers you asphalt work, call the Sheriff’s Office before agreeing to anything. If you have already been approached, let us know. Please share this post so others in our community are aware. The faster this information spreads, the less chance these crews have to take advantage of anyone else. The sooner we can identify who is legitimate and who is not the clearer it will be which businesses are doing honest work.”
If anyone has information regarding this scam, contact the Tama County Sheriff’s Office.
(Update/Radio Iowa) – A police chase in northeast Iowa ended in a head-on crash that injured an Iowa State Patrolman and a 24-year-old driver. According to Iowa State Patrol’s accident report, 24-year-old Cory Devries, of Grundy Center, was being chased by law enforcement and driving the wrong way on Highway 63 near Hudson when he crashed head-on into an Iowa State Patrol S-U-V that had its emergency lights flashing.
45-year-old Joshua Meggers of Grundy Center was the officer behind the wheel. Meggers is also a state legislator. Meggers was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Waterloo. Devries, the other driver, was in a 2007 Chevy sedan and was flown to Iowa City for treatment of serious injuries.
(Radio Iowa) – First District Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks says Senate Democrats are to blame for the federal government shutting down. Miller-Meeks says proposals from Democrats to continue enhanced premiums under the Affordable Care Act would be a bailout for insurance companies. “I think it’s interesting that, on one hand, the Democrats said that we gave tax cuts to the rich in the Working Families Tax Cuts, which, most of the cuts go to lower and middle-income people, but yet here, they’re directly trying to extend a tax cut to higher income individuals,” she says.
She says Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries refused to vote for a continuing resolution because they are facing pressure from members of their party. “Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies refused to support it because the radical left wing of their party, like AOC, threatened them. Schumer is more afraid of being primaried by his own left flank than he is of real consequences that his constituents and all Americans are facing,” she says.
The Kaiser Family Foundation says Marketplace premium payments could, on average, more than double after the enhanced premium tax credits expire at the end of the year.
