III. Recruitment Initiatives
1. Atlantic School-To-Work Program
Interested students were given the chance to learn about radio through the Atlantic High School program. In addition to industry information, students were given the chance to receive training and experience in programming, news, sports, sales, marketing, promotion and technology. General Manager Jim Field spoke to 8th grade TAG class about broadcast, writing and photography opportunities on station web site.
1A. CAM School-To-Work Program
Working with CAM high school in Anita during 2008 school year to provide broadcast news training for two students at our location. Students come to studio two days per week for an hour to see first hand how broadcast news is gathered and reported. They are learning how to gather, write, report and identify news and is learning broadcast news issues.
2. Atlantic High School Career Day
Staff spoke with students from Atlantic High School during career event at school. General Manager Jim Field served as interviewer for mock job interview program for junior high school students in February, 2009.
3. Internship Program
Employed 6 local high school students and trained them to perform on-air duties. Those duties include EAS operation, meter readings, transmitter operation, news, public affairs and programming. These students work under the direction of program director Chris Parks and News Director Ric Hanson.
3A. Internship Program at County Fair
During Cass County fair, 4-H students are trained to do live radio interviews. Each night of fair, a student will do a, live fifteen minute interview program visiting with local 4-H students. The exercise is designed to give students interested in broadcasting hands-on, live experience on-the-air. KJAN staff trains students on questions to ask, how to interview, how to use equipment, etc.
3B. Internship Scholarship
Provided a $1000 college scholarship to Katie Wagner to help her in her broadcast studies at Briar Cliff College, Sioux City IA, 2008.
4. Adult Internship Program
Employed 2 adults from the community and trained them to perform on-air duties. Those duties include EAS operation, meter readings, transmitter operation, news, public affairs and programming. These individuals work under the direction of program director Chris Parks and news director Ric Hanson.
5. Professional Training
Sent General Manager Jim Field to Iowa Broadcasters Association meetings in June, 2009 for training. Jim Field attended National Association of Broadcasters State Leadership Conference in Washington, DC in April, 2009. News Director Ric Hanson attended 2009 Iowa Broadcast News Association Conference. Ric Hansen is also a member of the board of directors of the Iowa Broadcast News Association. Traffic Director Stacie Hartmann trained on phone with Smarts Broadcast technicians. Smarts Broadcast trainer/technician in-house for 10 days of training and set-up of new on-air system with staff in March, 2009. Sales staff (Rod Christensen, Becky Mosier, Jason Jordahl) attended Des Moines leadership training full-day session of September 11, 2009.

7. Mentoring Programs
Employ a full-time Sales Training Manager to help new account executives with training and career counseling.
8. Student Web casting (www.AtlanticSportsFan.com)
Site allows students to learn how to broadcast, write and photograph sporting events involving Atlantic area youth. Currently, two students are working with station sports director Jim Field to learn broadcasting skills and are broadcasting events. One other student is learning writing and photography skills.
