CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – A former Mount Mercy University basketball player has died after a Johnson County car crash. The accident occurred a little after 3 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 380 near the Iowa Highway 965 overpass. The Iowa State Patrol says a northbound car driven by 26-year-old Rashad Carrington went out of control and struck a guardrail, then landed in a roadside ditch. He was pronounced dead later at an Iowa City hospital.

Carrington graduated from Mount Mercy in 2013 and most recently was playing for the Cedar Valley CourtKings, a minor league basketball team based in Waterloo.

Mark Melancon relieved with the bases loaded in the ninth and got Yadier Molina to ground into a game-ending double play for his ninth save. Michael Wacha (2-3) lost his third consecutive decision for only the second time in his career, the first coming in 2014. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in six innings.

Comments from Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “This was a good test for our team.  I thought the team score was good.  Hoped for a little better but we got third behind two state winners last year.  Also good to see us beat Kuemper and Carroll on their home course.  Jake had putting struggle to start but had a great back nine.  Ben played well.  Wanted to finish with a par but came up one shot short.  Matt played a better round today.  Good to see him in 3rd spot.  Kyle was steady once again.  Zac and Nate had some good holes and some tough ones.  Good job finishing in top 3 by only 7 strokes.”

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Carpenter hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Aledmys Diaz sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single. After Jeremy Hazelbaker flied to deep left, Carpenter drove a 1-2 pitch from A.J. Schugel (0-1) over the wall in right for his fourth homer.

It was the Cardinals’ first win over the Pirates in five games this season.

Pittsburgh had tied the game on Starling Marte’s double off Trevor Rosenthal (1-1) with two out in the top of the ninth.
