OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha has been chosen to host the U.S. Olympic curling trials before the 2018 winter games. The Omaha Sports Commission said Monday that the curling trials will be held at the 7,800-seat Baxter Arena from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19 of 2017. Omaha just finished hosting its third-straight Olympic swimming trials last month.

USA Curling CEO Rick Patzke says he was impressed by the professionalism of Omaha’s bid and the city’s commitment to make the trials successful. Omaha hasn’t hosted a major curling event before. The 2013 curling trials were held in Fargo, North Dakota.

Former Cardinals exec sentenced to jail for hacking Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — The former scouting director of the St. Louis Cardinals has been sentenced to nearly four years in jail for hacking the Houston Astros’ player personnel database. Christopher Correa’s sentencing in Houston federal court Monday came after he pleaded guilty in January to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer. He was sentenced to 46 months behind bars and ordered to pay $279,038 in restitution.

Correa was the Cardinals’ director of baseball development until being fired last summer. The data breach was first reported in June 2014 when Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters the team had been the victim of hackers who accessed servers and published online months of internal trade talks. Luhnow had previously worked for the Cardinals.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Leake had his second straight double-digit strikeout game with no walks, and St. Louis beat the San Diego Padres 10-2 on Monday night. Leake struck out 11 and allowed one run and six hits in six innings. He fanned 10 over seven innings in a victory at Milwaukee on July 10.

Leake has four career double-digit strikeouts games and is the first Cardinals pitcher with 10 or more in consecutive starts since Lance Lynn in 2012. Pinch-hitter Matt Adams’ two-run double keyed a four-run sixth inning for St. Louis. Christian Friedrich (4-6) gave up four runs — three earned — and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Matt Kemp homered for the Padres.

Suzuki gets 3 hits, up to 2,994 as Marlins beat Cardinals

Sports

July 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki doubled, singled twice and had another hit taken away on a replay challenge, leaving him six shy of 3,000 in the Miami Marlins’ 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The 42-year-old Suzuki made just his second start this month with All-Star Marcell Ozuna getting a day off. He’s been largely reduced to pinch hitting behind a set outfield, and singled in that role on Friday.

Suzuki also walked, scored a run and came up just short on his bid to beat out an infield hit. All of that in wilting, 93-degree heat for a player who’d been 3 for 11 in July. Giancarlo Stanton’s second double of the game drove in the go-ahead run in a two-run seventh against Jonathan Broxton (1-2). Christian Yelich had two hits and three RBIs as Miami took two of three for just its second series win the last seven years in St. Louis.

Kyle Barraclough (5-2) won in relief and A.J. Ramos earned his 29th save in 30 chances.
