KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Nearly 200 players took the field for an 8-minute, 46-second moment of silence to protest racial injustice before Major League Soccer’s return to action Wednesday night. Players wore black T-shirts, black gloves and black facemasks emblazoned with Black Lives Matter. The players walked toward midfield, raised their right arms one at a time and held the pose so long that some could be seen stretching fatigued muscles afterward. It was a poignant moment that put two of the nation’s most prominent changes over the last four months — masks and movements — at the forefront of the sport’s return.

UNDATED (AP) — As Major League Baseball cautiously tiptoes closer toward beginning its delayed 2020 season, several teams welcomed back players who might have been exposed to the coronavirus and the San Francisco Giants resumed workouts Wednesday after finally receiving the results of COVID-19 tests administered over the weekend. Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers worked out at Fenway Park for the first time since Boston opened its summer camp. Also, Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman was on the field after missing the first five days of workouts. In Cleveland, outfielder Franmil Reyes was cleared to return after being isolated for attending a party over the July 4 weekend.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The offseason renovations at Dodger Stadium have hitters adjusting to a new backdrop in center field. First baseman Max Muncy was hit by a pitch on his left ring finger during an intrasquad game and says he couldn’t see the ball coming. The black tarp that served as the backdrop in center is gone, replaced by a new center field plaza. Muncy is expected to be ready by opening day on July 23. But manager Dave Roberts says it’s unsettling that a hitter couldn’t see the ball because of the background.

UNDATED (AP) — Three PGA Tour players who have tested positive for the coronavirus but are no longer symptomatic will play together at the Workday Charity Open. The tour announced the change Wednesday in the latest revision of its COVID-19 policies. Nick Watney will play alongside Dylan Frittelli and Denny McCarthy during the first two rounds at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Watney was the first tour player to test positive and reported mild symptoms. The tour said all three players continue to test positive for the virus but have met the Centers for Disease Control guidelines for return to work. Players in those circumstances will either be grouped together or play as singles.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A prominent Kentucky horse owner and breeder has been banned from racing and sales at Keeneland Race Course after his racist post on social media. Keeneland says it is banning Tom VanMeter from the premises, including participation by his sales company, while the Lexington track further reviews circumstances related to the recent “reprehensible comments” he made online. The posting drew condemnation across the racing industry. VanMeter later said he was wrong and was disgusted by his actions.

CAM erupts for 7 runs in the 4th, takes down Audubon 13-2

The CAM Cougars baseball team got back in the winning groove on Wednesday night with a 13-2 win in 5 innings over the Audubon Wheelers.  After dropping their first two games of the season to ranked Class 2A opponents on Monday and Tuesday, the Cougars bounced back with a strong outing.

It was a close game early with a 1-1 score after 1 1/2 innings. Then the Cougars took advantage of some Audubon errors to take control. CAM score 2 runs in the bottom of the second when some miscommunication in shallow center led to a dropped potential final out by Audubon. CAM scored three more in the third as Ben Tibken made it in on a fielding error. Joe Kauffman and Cade Ticknor scored when a pickoff attempt to second by Ethan Klocke sailed into centerfield.

Then the Cougars really poured it on in the 4th with a 7 run frame. The barrage was highlighted by a three-run homerun from Cade Ticknor to left-center, his third round-tripper of the season. That inning pushed the lead to 13-2 and the Wheelers weren’t able to pull under the 10-run mercy rule in the 5th. After the game Ticknor talked about his homer.

Ticknor said this was a big game for the team to get back on track.

CAM improves to 11-2 on the season and have one more regular season tune-up on Friday at West Central Valley before starting District play on Saturday at home against Orient-Macksburg.

Audubon falls to 9-6 on the year and they will host Earlham on Thursday before they host Ar-We-Va in District action on Saturday.

Atlantic softball completes undefeated Hawkeye 10 season

The Atlantic Trojans softball team completed their undefeated run through the Hawkeye 10 Conference on Tuesday night with an 8-3 win over Shenandoah. Coach Terry Hinzmann said going 10-0 in the conference was a goal for the squad from the outset of the season and now they made it a reality.

The Trojans took a while to get the bats going and were down 2-0 heading into the fourth. Atlantic would get two across to tie the game in the 4th. Then took the lead with 3 more runs in the 5th and put 3 insurance runs up in the 7th. Alyssa Derby had 2 hits and scored 3 runs. Olivia Engler had 2 hits and 3 RBI. She also had 8 strikeouts in the circle and allowed just 2 hits on the night.

Coach Hinzmann was proud of the way the girls bounced back after a slow start in the game.

Coach Hinzmann said Olivia’s strong performance in the circle allowed the bats time to get going.

The Trojans are now 14-1 overall on the season with one regular season game left at home against Missouri Valley on Thursday night. We’ll have that game on KJAN with pregame at about 7:15 p.m. and first pitch at 7:30 p.m.

Des Moines schools and Drake to build $19.5M stadium

News, Sports

July 8th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Des Moines School Board has voted to move forward on a nearly $20 million high school and middle school sports stadium in partnership with Drake University, despite pushback from some district patrons. The city’s school board unanimously approved on Tuesday design and rental agreements with Drake University and the design firm. All but $4.5 million of the stadium’s $19.5 million cost will come from state funds. Critics who spoke at Tuesday’s board meeting said the funding should go toward improving schools and existing stadiums.

The 4,000-seat stadium will be the home field for four of the district’s five high school football teams and will be home for all of the district’s soccer teams. Drake also will use the field for its soccer teams.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Six years after spurning a possible $1 million payday to play baseball so he could pursue his passion for football, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes struck gold with a record-breaking 10-year contract worth as much as $503 million. But Mahomes insists this deal was about more than money. Sure, the 24-year-old superstar wanted financial security. He also wanted stability in an organization, the freedom to play without worrying about contracts, to continue playing for a coach who helped him win the MVP Award in the 2018 season and the Super Bowl last season.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Baseball’s two World Series finalists canceled workouts because of coronavirus testing delays. The Washington Nationals and Houston Astros called off training camp practices Monday after not receiving test results from Friday. The St. Louis Cardinals also scrubbed their scheduled workout for similar reasons. General manager Mike Rizzo of the champion Nationals said it’s not safe to continue with camp without accurate and timely testing. Rizzo called on Major League Baseball to work quickly to resolve issues with its lab to keep the season from being at risk. Astros GM James Click speculated the July 4th holiday weekend contributed to the delay. MLB said it addressed delays caused by the holiday weekend and doesn’t expect them to continue.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former police officer has been sentenced to four months in jail for causing a 2018 wreck that killed a Kansas teenager and injured two others outside the stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play. Thirty-five-year-old Terrell Watkins was sentenced Tuesday for involuntary manslaughter and other charges in the October 2018 crash that killed 17-year-old Chandan Rajanna, of Overland Park, Kansas, and seriously injured Rajanna’s father and sister. Witnesses told police the van had been speeding and making numerous lane changes as it passed other vehicles in heavy pregame traffic. Investigators say at the time of the crash, Watkins was late for an off-duty security assignment at Arrowhead Stadium.
