Fishing regulations relaxed at two oxbows along the Missouri River due to low water

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 20th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has relaxed the fishing regulations at Upper Decatur/Tieville Bend and Louisville Bend in Monona County. Low water levels in the Missouri River have trapped fish in these areas and water levels are continuing to drop.

Anglers with a valid sport fishing license may harvest all sizes and unlimited quantities of any species of fish from Upper Decatur/Tieville Bend and Louisville Bend, with the exception of Threatened or Endangered Species. Any number of fishing poles or jug fishing is allowed. Anglers must remain in sight of these lines at all times, and follow all other fishing regulations and area rules. Trot lines will be allowed (name and address must be attached), however lines may not be set across the entire water body.

Liberalized fishing regulations for Upper Decatur/Tieville Bend and Louisville Bend will be in effect through Oct. 31. Note: Blue Lake is not included in these liberalized regulations.

Dynamite, poison, electric shocking devices, or any stupefying substances are not allowed. It is illegal to sell fish or stock captured fish into public waters.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tyler O’Neill hit a two-run double to end a no-hit bid started by Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Pirates 5-4. Keller threw 84 pitches over six no-hit innings and was pulled from the game leading 4-0, but the Cardinals scored five runs off relief pitchers Geoff Hartlieb and Sam Howard in the seventh. O’Neill broke up the no-hit bid and keyed the inning with his bases-loaded double against Howard. St. Louis improved to 25-24 and is a game ahead of Cincinnati and Milwaukee for second place in the NL Central. The top two teams in each division advancing to the expanded postseason.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Corbin Burnes threw six solid innings of four-hit ball, Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee’s four-run eighth and the Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0. Burnes is continues to be the best starting pitcher on the Brewers’ staff. He is 4-0 in his last five starts with 47 strikeouts and six walks in that span. Against the Royals, he struck out nine.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten’s third football schedule of the 2020 season is highlighted by Michigan-Ohio State on Dec. 12, the final day of the conference’s regular-season and the latest date the rivals have ever played. The Big Ten released an eight-games-in-eight-weeks schedule that will start the weekend of Oct. 24. The opening weekend features Nebraska at Ohio State, two teams that were at the forefront of the grassroots push to play fall football in the Big Ten. In Week 2, Ohio State will play at Penn State on Halloween.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Health officials say a Chiefs fan who tested positive for COVID-19 one day after attending the season opener was allowed into a lower level box seat without a negative test through a lapse. The Kansas City Star reports that the fan should have been tested for COVID-19 before being admitted to the box, per the Chiefs policy, which applies only to those sitting in suites, including the lower level field boxes. Kansas City Health Department spokesman Bill Snook said the agency is working with the Chiefs, who are responsible for the testing, to strengthen the protocol.

Big Ten schedule: IA vs Purdue the week of Oct. 24th

September 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten has released the schedule for its eight-week football season that will start the weekend of Oct. 24. Week 1 features Nebraska at Ohio State, two teams that were at the forefront of the grassroots push to play fall ball in the Big Ten. Michigan will play at Minnesota in the Little Brown Jug rivalry to open the season. The Iowa Hawkeyes will open their season at Purdue and finish the regular season hosting Wisconsin.

In Week 2, Ohio State will play at Penn State on Halloween. The regular season concludes as usual with the Buckeyes and Wolverines facing off on Dec. 12. Michigan and Ohio State have played 103 times, but never later than November.

The Big Ten championship game will be played Dec. 19 in Indianapolis, matching the east and West Division champions. The conference has said it will give all its teams the opportunity to play on Dec. 19. The tentative plan is to match teams with similar finishes in the respective division standings.

So far, there will be no ticket sales to the general public. Only families of players on a school-by-school basis will be allowed. The Big Ten says decisions on its other fall and winter sports will be announced soon. Last month the Big Ten decided against playing football in the fall because of concerns about COVID-19. It reversed that decision this week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Dylan Carlson hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run outburst to help the St. Louis Cardinals earn a doubleheader sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. The Pirates committed three errors in the sixth, paving the way for Carlson’s second career home run. St. Louis took the opening game 6-5 behind home runs from Kolten Wong and Tyler O’Neill. The Cardinals moved back to .500 with the victory while playing their third doubleheader in five days.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Nottingham hit a grand slam and Orlando Arcia added a three-run shot as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied from an early four-run deficit and beat the Kansas City Royals 9-5. Nottingham’s two-out blast to left off Danny Duffy capped a six-run rally in the fourth inning that put the Brewers ahead for good. The comeback had begun when Christian Yelich led off the fourth with his 150th career homer. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez went 4 of 5 with a homer, double, two runs and four RBIs.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields says he felt distraught watching college football on TV last weekend. With the Big Ten’s decision to scrap fall sports in the name of player safety because of the coronavirus pandemic, Fields and his Buckeye teammates were sidelined. That changed this week when the Big Ten reversed course and announced that beginning Oct. 23-24. Fields says the players are grateful the season has been saved and are having fun being on the field together again. Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan said getting the season back “means everything.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Health officials are telling 10 fans who attended last week’s Kansas City Chiefs game to quarantine after one fan tested positive for COVID-19. Kansas City health officials announced Thursday that a fan who watched the game from a group’s box tested positive the next day. The group was seated in the lower level of the stadium. The Chiefs said in a statement the organization worked Kansas City health officials to find the fans who were possibly exposed. Chiefs officials say contact tracing protocols showed the group were wearing masks when they entered the stadium and pinpointed anyone who had contact with the individual.

Atlantic guts out win over Clarinda 7-0

Sports

September 19th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans found a way to pull out a win 7-0 over the Clarinda Cardinals on Friday night in Glenwood. In a wild game that included 10 total turnovers the Trojans were able to make just enough plays to grab their third straight win.

The two teams traded blows in the first half and both teams squandered scoring opportunities to leave the game scoreless at the break. The game remained scoreless through three quarters and the Trojans finally hit paydirt on their first possession of the 4th quarter. Grant Sturm thought he broke the scoreboard on the second play of the 4th when Clarinda punted the ball away. Sturm returned the kick 43-yards for a touchdown but the play was called back and a roughing the kicker call gave Clarinda a first down. Sturm got the ball right back for Atlantic, picking off Wyatt Schmitt on the next play to give the Trojans the ball at the 36 yard line. The Trojans then drove down the field and grabbed the lone score of the game with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Caden Anderson to Korey Parrott with 7:36 left in the game. Lane Nelson added the PAT to complete the only score of the game. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott was proud of the effort his team gave all night.

The final three possessions of the game ended with a Grant Sturm interception. The final pick to seal the game came as time expired. Sturm finished the game with four interceptions. Ethan Sturm and Joe Weaver also tallied a pick each in the game. A big moment in the game came in the second quarter as the Cardinals connected on an 83-yard bomb from Wyatt Schmitt to Michael Shull. Grant Sturm never gave up on that play and caught Shull at the 8 yard line. Two plays later the Cardinals fumbled a handoff and the Trojans pounced on the loose ball. After the game Coach McDermott said he has seen that fight from Sturm and the team all season.

Atlantic improves to 3-1 on the season, and extended their win streak to three games. The Trojans are set to travel to Des Moines Christian next week. Clarinda falls to 1-3 on the season and will host Shenandoah in the Page County Super Bowl next week.
