Atlantic grabs playoff win over Des Moines Christian

Podcasts, Sports

October 23rd, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans fought their way to a 21-0 win over Des Moines Christian on Friday night in the second round of the Class 2A Football Playoffs. The Trojans were playing in their first home playoff game in 18 years and picked up their first playoff win since that same year.

It was a slow start to the game with 5 possessions going scoreless before the Trojans struck first on the last play of the first quarter. Atlantic had just forced a turnover on downs and got the ball back with a couple seconds left in the quarter. Garrett McLaren loaded up a long ball and Colin Mullenix was able to run past the defense and grab it for a 51-yard touchdown catch. Atlantic forced the Lions into a three and out on the next possession and then went 9-plays and 65 yards for another score. Bodie Johnson capped off that drive with a 5 yard touchdown run.

The two teams then traded some possessions as both offenses struggled to hang on to the ball. The Teams combined for 5 turnovers in the second half. Atlantic secured the game with a late drive capped off by another Bodie Johnson touchdown run with 3:20 left.

Atlantic improves to 7-1 on the season and will wait to see who their third round opponent will be next Friday. Des Moines Christian ends their season with a record of 4-3.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans in the next round on KJAN. Listen to the full postgame interview with Coach McDermott and Colin Mullenix below.
