(UNI) IRVING, Texas – Northern Iowa redshirt freshman Parker Keckeisen was tabbed the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after picking up a ranked victory over Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer.

Keckeisen earned a sudden-victory win over returning All-American and 2020 Big 12 third-place wrestler Geer. He earned a takedown in a wild scramble in the overtime period to give Geer his first loss of the season.

Keckeisen is 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in duals. He has two major decisions and a tech fall on the year. This is the first weekly award for Keckeisen.

He is the second Panther wrestler to earn Wrestler of the Week honors joining Brody Teske.

The Panthers travel to Northern Illinois Friday evening for the final dual outside the state of Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa conservation officials say four people in Linn and Buchanan counties have been convicted of dozens of wildlife violations. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Monday that a routine inspection of taxidermy operations led authorities to issue search warrants, leading to the arrest of Jason Webster, of Quasgueton, and Jeremiah Pillard, of Troy Mills. Webster was charged with more than 20 violations.

Under a plea deal, Webster will pay $15,500 in civil damages plus criminal costs. Pillard pleaded guilty to illegal taking of animals and must pay $6,750 in civil damages and criminal fines. Two women from Quasgueton pleaded guilty to violations related to hunting tags and licenses.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Tremell Murphy scored 30 points and No. 25 Drake rolled past Illinois State 95-60 on Monday night in the Bulldogs’ first game as a ranked team in nearly 13 years. ShanQuan Hemphill had 18 points for the unbeaten Bulldogs, who improved to 37-4 in the Knapp Center under coach Darian DeVries. Antonio Reeves led Illinois State with 20 points. The Bulldogs had little trouble with the Redbirds after struggling to a 78-76 overtime win in Sunday’s series opener. Reeves had 27 points in the first meeting.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed a pair of backups, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore, on the COVID-19 list as close contacts as they begin their final preparations for the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay. Chiefs coach Andy said Monday he was told of the situation Sunday but could provide no other information. Neither of the players actually tested positive for COVID-19, which means Robinson — a regular contributor — and Kilgore could still play in the Super Bowl. Both would need to return negative tests throughout the week to get off the list.

UNDATED (AP) — Rob Gronkowski was the prototype as a big, physical, pass-catching tight end who could take over games with Tom Brady throwing to him in New England. The two are together again with the Buccaneers and relying on each other in another Super Bowl. Travis Kelce has been exactly that for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs as a record-shattering game changer at the position. Both Gronkowski and Kelce are fun-loving guys who take over any room their in with their larger-than-life personalities. They also have a mutual respect for each other and all of their respective career accomplishments.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have completed their blockbuster trade to acquire All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies. St. Louis dealt left-hander Austin Gomber and four minor leaguers to the Rockies: infielder Elehuris Montero, right-hander Tony Locey, infielder Mateo Gil and right-handed pitcher Jake Sommers. As part of the trade, Colorado will send cash to St. Louis to offset part of the money Arenado is due in his contract.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — When the Kansas City Chiefs fell short in an overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC title game two years ago, what was missing wasn’t so much an impact pass rusher or shut-down corner. No, what was missing most was someone orchestrating the entire defense. That’s when Steve Spagnuolo entered the picture. His scheme helped the Chiefs return to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years last season, and now they are back looking for a repeat.

UNDATED (AP) — The Super Bowl is always defined by numbers, this one perhaps more than others because there’s one number _ positive tests for COVID-19 this week _ that no one wants to see. That was on the minds of players and coaches who gathered Monday _ virtually, of course _ for the kickoff to Super Bowl week. Even so, their attention was focused mainly on the week of preparations for the game, a week that will be very different for Tom Brady and other players who have Super Bowl experience.

UNDATED (AP) — Tom Brady keeps raising the bar about how long he could keep playing quarterback in the NFL. As the 43-year-old Brady prepares for his record 10th Super Bowl and first since joining Tampa Bay this past offseason he says he’s definitely considering surpassing his previous goal and playing beyond age 45. It’s a matter of having the commitment and staying healthy but Brady has shown he can still thrive at an age most of his peers have retired.

Garza named to Wooden Award late season Top 20 list

Sports

February 1st, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the John R. Wooden Award’s Late Season Top 20 Watch List, which includes University of Iowa senior All-American center Luka Garza.

Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2020-21 season thus far, the list comprises of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for one of the sport’s most prestigious honors.

Garza (6-foot-11, 265 pounds) has been the most dominant player in college basketball in 2020-21. Garza leads the country in points per game (26.4), player efficiency rating (42.65), 30-point games (6), and field goals made (159). He ranks 11th nationally in double-doubles (7) and 14th in free throws made (80). The native of Washington, D.C., is one of only two players in the country (Notre Dame’s Nate Laszewski) to shoot at least 60 percent from the field and at least 45 percent from 3-point range (minimum 25 3-pointers made); Garza has more than double the field goals made and attempted as Laszewski.

Garza became Iowa’s all-time leading scorer in Big Ten games on Jan. 10, 2021. He is 18 points from netting point No. 2,000 and 135 passing from surpassing Roy Marble as Iowa’s all-time leading scorer.

In addition to being named a Wooden Award All-American last season, Garza was recognized as the National Player of the Year by six national media outlets, the Pete Newell Big Man and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year, Big Ten Player of the Year, and District VI Player of the Year.

The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be announced following the NCAA Tournament in April.

No. 8 Iowa (12-4, 6-3) returns to action on Tuesday against Michigan State (8-6, 2-6). Tipoff is set for 6:07 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will be televised on FS1.

Campbell announced ISU football staff changes last week

Sports

February 1st, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell announced last Friday changes to his football staff which includes a promotion from a long-time staffer, a familiar name returning to the sidelines and a couple of alterations in position group assignments.

Taylor Mouser, who has been on staff since the beginning of the Campbell era, will move into an assistant coaching role taking over leadership of the tight end unit. The move will allow offensive coordinator Tom Manning, who mentored the tight ends in 2020, the opportunity to work solely as the director of the offense.

Campbell also announced that Jake Waters, who was a graduate assistant for the Cyclones in 2017, will rejoin the staff as a quality control assistant for the offense and wide receivers coach Nate Scheelhaase will also be the running game coordinator along with mentoring the running backs, duties previously held by Mick McCall, whose contract was not renewed.

The promotion of Mouser and addition of Waters are pending successful background checks.

Mouser has worn many hats in his five years as a member of the Iowa State football coaching staff.

Starting out as a graduate assistant, Mouser worked in the scouting department and then moved into a role as senior quality control for the Cyclone offense in 2019.

Mouser’s outstanding work behind the scenes earned him the promotion.

“Taylor has been a valuable member of our staff since we arrived five years ago,” Campbell said. “He’s built a positive rapport with our players and his work serving as a quality control assistant with our offense has been very beneficial to our success. Taylor will fit right in and continue to help our program make greater strides.”

In the last two seasons, Iowa State has produced two of the most prolific offenses in the history of Cyclone football. Iowa State broke the school record for total offense (444.3) and had the third-best scoring offense (32.2) in school history in 2019, and followed it up with the second-best scoring offense (32.9) and third-best total offense (436.3) totals in Cyclone history in 2020.

Mouser has assisted a number of All-Americans and All-Big 12 performers to unprecedented success working with the offense. Running back Breece Hall, who led the nation in rushing in 2020, became the first unanimous All-American in school history, tight end Charlie Kolar, ISU’s first two-time All-American in 25 years, and quarterback Brock Purdy, who owns or shares 25 school records as the Cyclone signal-caller, all have benefited from Mouser’s expertise.

The Cyclones have also set the following school records in the last two seasons with Mouser aiding the offense: touchdowns (53, 2019), points (418, 2019), yards per play (6.45, 2019) and rushing touchdowns (31, 2020).

In all, Mouser has played a huge role in Iowa State’s resurgence nationally since joining the staff prior to the 2016 season. The Cyclones have qualified for four-straight bowl games, annually appeared in the national rankings, won 32 games and totaled four of ISU’s five above-.500 conference seasons in the history of the Big 12 Conference (1996-present) since 2017.

A native of Chandler, Arizona, Mouser earned his bachelor’s degree at Adams State in 2013. He was a graduate assistant for Campbell at Toledo during the 2015 campaign.

Waters returns to Ames after a three-year stint at UTEP (2018-20) as an assistant coach on Dana Dimel’s staff. Waters worked with the tight ends, fullbacks and wide receivers during his time with the Miners.

“We feel Jake is one of the best young coaches in the nation,” Campbell said. “We witnessed his talents when he was a graduate assistant with us and he gained three more years of experience as an assistant coach at UTEP. Bringing Jake back will be a huge plus for our program.”

Waters’ initial coaching experience at the FBS level was in 2017 when Campbell hired him as a graduate assistant for the offense. The Cyclones thrived that season, tying a school-record with three wins over ranked opponents (Oklahoma, TCU, Memphis) and finishing the year with an 8-5 record and a victory in the Liberty Bowl.

Waters was a volunteer quarterbacks coach at Iowa Western Community College for two seasons (2015-16) prior to his first stint at Iowa State.

A native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waters had an outstanding two-year career as the quarterback at Kansas State (2013-14), compiling a 17-9 record as a starter. He was All-Big 12 Second Team in 2014, breaking school career records for completion percentage and passing efficiency.

A 2014 graduate of Kansas State, Waters prepped at St. Albert High School in Council Bluffs, leading the Falcons to a pair of Class 1A state titles and was a three-time all-state selection
