Atlantic excited for crack at top-ranked Cherokee

Sports

February 17th, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team is gearing up to take on Class 3A #1 Cherokee, Washington tonight in the Class 3A Region 1 Semifinals. The Braves are 20-0 on the season and the Trojans are 9-13. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason said his team is fired up for the opportunity.

The Braves are led by University of Sioux Falls commit JeMae Nichols who is averaging 14.5 points per game. Coach Vargason said they will have to make sure she doesn’t get a lot of opportunities in transition, because that is where she is at her best. The Braves’ closest games this season have been more low scoring affairs and Coah Vargason said his team will need to be ready to change the tempo at times.

Atlantic has been led by new career scoring leader Haley Rasmussen and her 21.2 points per game. The Trojans have done a great job of sharing the ball in recent outings and their pressure defense has been clicking well at the end of the year.

We’ll have coverage of the game from Cherokee tonight with pregame at 6:45 p.m. and tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. Chris Parks will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and audio online at KJAN.com

Exira-EHK advances to Regional Semifinal with win over Murray

Sports

February 16th, 2021 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans pieced together a 64-31 win over Murray on Tuesday night in Elk Horn to advance to the Class 1A Region 8 Semifinals. Macy Emgarten and Quinn Grubbs paved the way with 24 points each in the win.

The Spartans rode the outside shot in the first half to jump on top 26-8 at the end of the first and 33-16 at half. Emgarten poured in 4 of her 6 threes in the game in the first half, including three in the first quarter. The Spartans connected on 9 shots from downtown in the game. Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen thought they settled too much with the outside shot early.

The Spartans got to the rim more consistently in the second half and pulled away further down the stretch. Coach Petersen felt a better defensive effort translated into better offense in the second half.

The Spartans improved to 21-0 on the season and will get to host the Regional Semifinal game on Friday. They will face the Stanton Viqueens, who picked up a 63-25 win over Lamoni on Tuesday.

Murray was led by 8 points from Teryn Shields. The Mustangs end their season at 12-10.

You’ll be able to catch that Exira-EHK vs. Stanton game on Friday night on Spartan Media through the KJAN Video Network.
