Watch for these warning signs signaling gambling may be a problem

News

March 29th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The second weekend of the college basketball tournaments is underway and for Iowans with a gambling addiction, it can be a true challenge to avoid the urge to place a bet. Andrew Gerodias, an official with Iowa’s largest addiction treatment provider, says there are warning signs to watch for in yourself and in your loved ones that may indicate a problem is looming.

“Often what ends up happening is individuals start to isolate more,” Gerodias says. “They may start putting aside some of their responsibilities or their hobbies, things that they enjoy, and more of their time becomes focused on getting money for gambling or going and gambling.” Gerodias is outpatient supervisor for the Rosecrance Jackson Center in Sioux City. For Iowans who think they may have a gambling problem, he says there’s plenty of help available.

“That can be done without any sort of cost to them through interacting with local support groups like GA, Gamblers Anonymous,” Gerodias says. “There may be in-person meetings, there may be online meetings, whatever they feel most comfortable with. You can initially get started through making those phone calls to 1-800-BETS OFF.” For someone with a more serious problem, Gerodias says an evaluation at a treatment center may be needed.

“There is also the ability to self-exclude at casinos, where you go in and you say, ‘I can no longer be here. I want to be put onto a list,’ and then you are no longer allowed to come onto that property,” Gerodias says. “It can give some of that extra incentive not to take part in the gambling on those sites.” Gerodias says Rosecrance facilities in Iowa help more than 7,000 teens and adults every year at outpatient treatment clinics in Sioux City, Cherokee, Davenport, Le Mars, Spencer and Sheldon.

Iowa State falls to Illinois in the NCAA Tournament

Sports

March 29th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

A Cyclone rally fell short in Boston

John Walters on the Cyclone Network. Iowa State sliced a 10-point Illinois halftime lead to two but could not get over the hump in a 72-69 loss in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. A slow start was costly as the Cyclones trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening half and never led.

A Cyclone team that was picked to finish seventh in the Big-12 preseason poll finishes with a record of 29-8 and a Big-12 Tournament title.

Illinois won its seventh straight game to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005.[

That’s Illinois coach Brad Underwood. The Illini held off Iowa State in the waning minutes and will play top ranked and defending champion UCONN in the East Regional final on Saturday.

Terrance Shannon led The Illini with 29 points. Curtis Jones paced the Cyclones with 26.

Iowa House passes another bill to aid landowners fighting carbon pipelines

Ag/Outdoor, News

March 29th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa House has voted to let landowners seek a court ruling now on whether carbon pipeline developers qualify for the government’s eminent domain authority to force unwilling property owners to let the pipeline on their land. Republican Representative Charley Thomson of Charles City led debate on the proposal.

“We’re faced with lots of choices in this body. Few go to the heart of Iowa the way this does. Land is the original asset in Iowa. It’s in our souls. An unjust taking of land without remedy is not only irritating, it’s outrageous,” Thomson said. “Let’s give Iowans a remedy.” Thomson says, right now, property owners are forced to live in limbo for years — waiting for the Iowa Utilities Board decision on the project as well as the resolution of lawsuits expected to challenge that decision.

“That means for that entire period you have these Century Farms, landowners, people who didn’t especially want to have this pipeline going over their land and have some questions about it, not being able to get an answer on their constitutional law question,” Thomson says, “and not being able to sell their land at full value or make a decision on tiling or make a decision on estate planning.”

Republican Representative Steven Holt of Denison says Iowa landowners are pleading with elected officials to do the right thing — while their land is in limbo. “For several years I’ve watched, I’ve listened and I’ve been deeply concerned,” Holt says. “I’ve watched landowners fighting to protect their private property rights…and I have been disturbed by that fact that others do not hear their pleas or the truth of their message.”

Representative Bobby Kaufmann, a Republican from Wilton, was the other lawmaker who spoke before the bill passed on an 86 to seven vote — and Kaufmann sounded as if he was speaking directly to Bruce Rastetter, an influential G-O-P donor who owns Summit Carbon Solutions.

“Most importantly I have a message for those who would choose to attempt to use their money to influence this vote, for those who would attempt to use their money to prevent this vote,” Kaufmann says. “My message is: ‘Take your money and shove it!'” Kaufmann says government doesn’t exist to make the confiscation of private property easier or cheaper for pipeline developers.

The Iowa House has previously passed other proposals to set up pipeline regulations, but all have stalled in the Iowa Senate.
