Blizzard watch issued for parts of eastern Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowans are preparing for another blast of frigid and dangerous winter weather this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory starting Saturday night in parts of eastern Iowa, and a blizzard watch for parts of northern and central Iowa into eastern Iowa on Sunday. Snow is expected in the northeast Saturday night. But by Sunday, strong winds of up to 50 mph are expected to create whiteout conditions in some areas.

Temperatures are also expected to plummet late Sunday, with lows coming in around 15-below zero in the northeast to near zero in southern Iowa. Wind chills of almost 50-below could hit some areas.

Today: A 20 percent chance of snow before 8am. Mostly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 26 by 11am. Breezy, with a north northwest wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 36 by 5am. Blustery, with a light and variable wind becoming west northwest 15 to 20 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.

**High Wind Watch in effect Sunday afternoon through and evening**
Sunday: A 20 percent chance of snow after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 42. Windy, with a west northwest wind 13 to 23 mph increasing to 24 to 34 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph.
Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -3. Wind chill values as low as -25. Very windy, with a north northwest wind 32 to 37 mph decreasing to 22 to 27 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 49 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 6. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around -7.

Tuesday: Sunny and cold, with a high near 10.

A BLIZZARD WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR PARTS OF NORTH CENTRAL, CENTRAL, EAST CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST IOWA, BEGINNING ON SUNDAY.

BLIZZARD CONDITIONS POSSIBLE SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING FOLLOWED BY DANGEROUSLY COLD CONDITIONS SUNDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY. .SNOW WILL FALL ACROSS NORTHEAST AREAS SATURDAY NIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WITH STRONG WINDS WILL ARRIVE BY LATE SUNDAY MORNING AND SWEEP SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION SUNDAY EVENING AND SUNDAY NIGHT.

NONE OF THE COUNTIES IN THE KJAN LISTENING AREA IS INCLUDED IN THE WATCH, BUT IF YOU PLAN ON TRAVELING FROM OR TO EASTERN, NORTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHEASTERN IOWA LATE THIS WEEKEND, YOU SHOULD STAY ALERT TO FUTURE FORECASTS AND WEATHER BULLETINS.
