Hawkins enters transfer portal

Sports

April 26th, 2021 by admin

Northwest Missouri State basketball star and Atlantic native Ryan Hawkins entered his name into the transfer portal on Monday. Hawkins has decided to explore options to play at another school for his final year of eligibility. Hawkins told KJAN Sports he has loved his time in Maryville but feels like it’s time to move on.

Hawkins and the Bearcats are coming off another Division II National Championship this season, their third in the last four years. Hawkins averaged a team best 22.6 points per game this season to go along with 8.8 rebounds per contest. He shot 54% from the field and 46% from 3-point range this year. Hawkins said he started to think about giving something else a shot after the National Championship game.

Hawkins indicated that he would like to stay somewhere in the Midwest so he’s not too far away from family and friends, but he knows he’ll get support wherever he decides to go.

Hawkins said his phone started ringing from schools interested not even ten minutes after he entered the portal. He said he’s looking for a good fit academically and athletically and will take his time in making a decision. Hawkins set a number of records  in the Bearcats program, including taking over the career rebounding mark this past season.

Filip Rebraca signs with Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced on Monday that transfer Filip Rebraca has signed with the University of Iowa.

Rebraca, a native of Sombor, Serbia, is on pace to graduate this summer from the University of North Dakota with a degree in business economics.

“I am ecstatic to be a Hawkeye,” said Rebraca. “Iowa is the best overall fit for me, from the coaches and players to the school and culture. All the coaches were honest and welcoming. Coach McCaffery and his staff already have shown signs that they trust me and have my best interests in mind. As well as that, I want to play with great players and people.

“The roster is filled with talented guys and sharing the court with them will be amazing. There is no doubt in my mind we will get along on and off the court. I want to be a part of this winning culture and see how I can help the program, my teammates, and coaches.”

Rebraca (6-foot-9, 225 pounds) started 74 of 87 games in three seasons for the Fighting Hawks. He posted 20 double-doubles, ranks eighth in school history with 76 blocked shots, and scored in double figures in 33 of the last 34 games, dating back to February, 2020.

He led the team in scoring (16.8), rebounding (7.8), and field goal percentage (.506, 174-344) as a junior in 2020-21. An All-Summit League Second Team honoree, Rebraca posted season bests in 3-pointers made (15) and 3-point percentage (36.6 percent), and led the squad in scoring 14 times, rebounding 17 times, and blocks 11 times last season.

“The first thing that is so incredibly impressive is that Filip has a complete skillset for a big man,” said McCaffery. “He is an athlete who understands how to impact the game in a variety of ways, is an excellent student, and is incredibly mature. He consistently produced at a high level, no matter who it was against. To get someone who has all those skills will blend very well with our players and program.”

Rebraca started all 32 games as a sophomore in 2019-20, leading the team and the league with 13 double-doubles. He reached double figures in 27 of the 32 games, ranking second on the squad in points per game (14.3) and first in rebounding (8.9). The 13 double-doubles were the most by a UND player in a single season during the program’s Division I era (2008-present).

On Jan. 30, 2021, Rebraca became the 39th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points and the 25th player to have 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. He is only the second player in the program’s DI era to accomplish the feat in three-or-fewer seasons, joining the program’s third all-time leading scorer and seventh all-time in rebounds, Troy Huff.

Prior to college, Rebraca spent the 2017-18 school year at Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Massachusetts, where he was named the Dale Lash Team MVP and earned Class A All-NEPSAC accolades.

Rebraca’s father, Zeljko, had an extensive professional career, playing in the NBA for five seasons and over 10 seasons in Europe, including winning two EuroLeague championships (1992, 2000).

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will be recognized on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium following the football team’s open workout at approximately 11:30 a.m. (CT). Iowa won 22 games, finished third in the Big Ten, and earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, matching its best seed in tournament history. The Hawkeyes went wire-to-wire inside the AP Top 15, rising as high as No. 3 in the country, for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

Atlantic Scores: Roni Hook  48-49 for 97 (placed 30th); Abby Muller  55-51  for 106(43rd);  Abby Smith 52-57 for 109  (48th); Reagan Leonard  56-53 for 109  (49th); Lexi Noelck  60-58 for 118 (61st).
Coach Kathy Hobson: “Except for Roni Hook, this was the first 18 hole competition for these girls.  Everyone gained valuable experience against some very quality 4A teams.  We had our ups and downs; playing conditions were cold and windy which is no excuse because everyone had to play in it.  But with younger girls lacking experience it is going to effect them more. Roni Hook came away with a birdie and a par on the day; Abby Muller, one par.

Despite not meeting our goal of finishing at least in the middle of the pack, the true highlight was another coach sharing that his players and their parents watching had made numerous positive comments about the Atlantic girls being friendly, showing good etiquette and just in general how they carried themselves on the course.  Marty and I see that every time we are out but it makes us very proud when others recognize the quality of girls we have.”
