Family Week planned for July for students involved in sports, music, speech

News, Sports

April 21st, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Starting this summer, there will be a week off designated for family time for Iowa high school athletes, coaches and those involved with music and speech. The week of July 25th is designated as Family Week, so there will be no practices for athletes or participants in music and speech. Tom Keating, executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association in Boone, explains the simple idea. “It was important for us to at least impress upon people that we thought family time was important, to be quite honest,” Keating says. “If I had my way, we’d probably go more than a week but you’ve gotta’ start somewhere and this is where we’re starting.”

The state baseball tournament will go on as scheduled during the last week in July at Principal Park in Des Moines. Next year, Keating says the summer baseball and softball seasons will be starting in mid-May. “What that will coincide with is a change in some of our spring sport dates,” he says, “so everything will move back a week and that way, we have that week clear.”

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is cooperating with the boys athletic association in the Family Week program, he says, and the same goes for the Iowa High School Music Association.

Legislature votes to set some speed limits for electric bicycles

News, Sports

April 20th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa legislators have voted to establish some speed restrictions for low-speed electric bicycles. People riding e-bikes on multi-use trails or in bike lanes along city streets would be required to abide by any posted speed limit for other traffic. If there are no speed limits in the area, 20 miles an hour would be the upper limit.

Representative Bob Kressig of Cedar Falls says other states are taking similar steps to set standards for e-bikes that are different from the rules of the road for mopeds and scooters.

“We’re seeing a lot more electric bikes that are coming and people are riding them,” Kressig says. “I imagine one day I’ll be on one, too — maybe a few years from now.” E-bikes are equipped with low-speed motors and the rider must be pedaling, even when the motor kicks in. The bill has cleared the House and Senate and now goes to the governor.

Sports

April 19th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball program has signed Kansas transfer Tristan Enaruna, head coach T.J. Otzelberger announced today. Enaruna (en-uh-ROO-nuh), a 6-8 guard/forward from Almere, Flevoland, Netherlands, played two seasons for the Jayhawks and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Tristan will impact our program immediately,” Otzelberger said. “He’s a skilled wing that can make plays off the dribble, finish at the rim and knock down the perimeter jump shot. Defensively, he provides the length and versatility to guard multiple positions. We look forward to him being one of our leaders this season and beyond.”

Enaruna saw action in 25 games for Kansas in 2020-21, playing 9.4 minutes per game and averaging 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds. He scored a season-high 12 points in 16 minutes against TCU, going 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 behind the arc.

In his two-year career with Kansas, Enaruna played in 55 games and averaged 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds.

A four-star and top-60 recruit, Enaruna played his final season of high school at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah where he averaged 10.6 points as the school went 26-4. He was listed as one of the top international players at the Basketball Without Borders event.

In the summer of 2019, Enaruna played for the Netherlands and was second overall in scoring at 19.1 points per game at the U18 FIBA European Championship in Volos, Greece.

Enaruna is the fifth transfer to sign with the Cyclones this spring, joining Caleb Grill (UNLV), Gabe Kalscheur (Minnesota), Aljaž Kunc (Washington State) and Robert Jones (Denver). Otzelberger also got a re-affirmed commitment from four-star high school signee Tyrese Hunter (Racine, Wisconsin).

Allison Pohlman named new Drake Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Sports

April 19th, 2021 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa – Allison Pohlman, a longtime associate head coach and one of the primary architects of the Drake women’s basketball program’s renaissance, has been named the Suzie Glazer Burt Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Drake University.

Drake director of athletics Brian Hardin announced Pohlman’s hiring Sunday, April 18. A formal introduction of the seventh women’s basketball head coach in Drake history will follow on Monday, April 26 at a time and location to be announced.

Pohlman has been a member of the Drake staff since 2007 and elevated to associate head coach in 2014 by then-head coach Jennie Baranczyk. Last week, Baranczyk accepted the head coaching position at Oklahoma after nine seasons at Drake.

“Allison has been a critical part of our women’s basketball program’s success. Throughout this process, it became incredibly apparent that in addition to her proven record of achievement as an assistant, she also possessed the perfect combination of vision, drive and leadership to continue the ascent of our program as its head coach,” Hardin said. “Her passion for our program, University and student-athletes is unrivaled. Allison’s values align perfectly with our athletic department and I know she will continue the Drake women’s basketball tradition of developing strong women leaders both on the basketball court and in life.”

In her 14 years on the Drake campus, Pohlman has crafted and established a proven legacy of culture building, on-court excellence and the ability to recruit and develop some of the finest student-athletes in Drake history.

“This truly is a dream come true,” Pohlman said. “I’ve always held Drake in the highest regard and every day I am reminded of the prominence of this program as I walk through the Knapp Center and see the tradition displayed on those banners. I’m grateful to President Martin and Brian Hardin for having the faith and trust in me to continue that tradition. I’m ecstatic about not only this opportunity, but the people I get to do it with. It was an honor to work with Jennie to create the success we had and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to build upon that success.”

“I am thrilled to welcome Allison as the next head coach for Drake women’s basketball,” said Drake University President Marty Martin, “She brings everything needed for success to her new position – strong leadership, a brilliant basketball mind, and a deep commitment to the well-being and success of our student-athletes. The future is bright for our women’s basketball program!”

Pohlman’s success and familiarity in the MVC and within the state of Iowa run even deeper than her 14 years at Drake.

Before joining the Drake staff, the Wellsburg, Iowa native spent seven seasons on staff at UNI and served as the Panthers’ associate head coach during the 2006-07 campaign. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at UNI in 2000-01 before being elevated to an assistant coach for the following season at her alma mater.

As a player from 1996-2000, the former Allison Starr, was one of the top student-athletes in UNI history as the centerpiece in the rejuvenation of UNI women’s basketball under retired head coach Tony DiCecco. In 1997, she was named to the MVC’s All-Freshman team. In each of her final three seasons, she was named All-MVC First Team and to The Valley’s All-Defensive Team. She was runner-up to Jackie Stiles for the MVC’s Player of the Year award in 2000 and named The Valley’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Pohlman capped her career by ranking second in UNI history with 1,463 points, third with 711 rebounds, second with 274 steals, fifth with 278 assists, and the school record holder for free throws made, free throws attempted, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, double-doubles and steals per game. Pohlman was inducted into the UNI Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2011.

The Wellsburg, Iowa native and her husband, Kirk, have triplet daughters, Quinn, Rubie and Sidny. Pohlman holds a bachelor’s of science in Dietetics and a master’s degree in Health Education from UNI.
