IHSAA announces time changes for Wednesday State Baseball due to excessive heat

Game times at both sites of the 2021 IHSAA State Baseball Tournament will be adjusted on Wednesday, July 28 due to forecasted heat indexes in Carroll and Iowa City.

The early session at both locations will begin at 10 a.m., with the second game to follow at 12 p.m. The late sessions will be scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, with the following game at 8 p.m. There will be at least 40 minutes between games during each session.

In Carroll, both Class 1A and 2A are scheduled to play their semifinals on Wednesday. Class 3A will open the tournament in Iowa City with their quarterfinal contests.

Games were previously scheduled for 11 a.m. starts for early sessions, and 4:30 p.m. (Carroll) and 5 p.m. (Iowa City) starts for late sessions.

Tickets already purchased remain good for their updated times. Tickets for this year’s tournament are sold in two-game sessions for each site and date. Spectators are encouraged to remain cool and hydrated prior to arriving at each site. Gates will open one hour before the start of each session. Spectators are permitted to enter both host sites with unopened water bottles.

This updated schedule is currently only set for games on Wednesday, July 28.

North squad wins 2021 Iowa Shrine Bowl

The Iowa Shrine Bowl was played on Saturday afternoon at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The all-star game featuring Iowa’s best senior high school football players was back after missing last year due to the pandemic.

The North squad led by Iowa’s recruits Cooper DeJean (OABCIG) and Max White (CR Kennedy) picked up the victory in the contest 52-24. DeJean hit White for the opening touchdown of the game with a throw to the flat that turned into a 51-yard score. DeJean would later complete a 60-yard touchdown pass to Tay Norman of Waterloo West.

Washington quarterback Trashaun Willis was named offensive MVP for the south and orchestrated a 60-yard scoring drive early that he finished off with a 1 yard score.

The event provides a showcase for Iowa’s best seniors and benefits The Shriners Hospital for Children.

A number of area athletes played on the South Squad: Eddie Vlcek, Riverside; Silas Bales, Glenwood; Brayden Wollan, Underwood; Layne Pryor, Woodbine; Tre Melby, Logan-Magnolia.

Underwood’s Nate Mechaelsen was an assistant coach for the south and Maddox Mechaelsen of Underwood served as a manager. Mia Dawn Trotter and Makynzie Steffens of Atlantic served on the Cheer Squad along with Macie Sefrit of Bedford, Sophia Smith, Kira Langenfeld, and Lesley Chavez of Denison-Schleswig, Dalyce Erickson and Madison Hammons of Sidney, and Haley Lux of Kuemper Catholic.

The State Baseball Tournament begins today with the 1A Quarterfinals in Carroll. Class 2A Quarterfinals will be played at Merchants Park tomorrow. The Class 3A and 4A schools will play later this week at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City. Here’s a look at the schedule.

Golf cart stolen from Greenfield Country Club

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office reports a Yamaha golf cart was stolen from the Greenfield Country Club early Sunday morning. The cart is light purple in color. If you have any information about the crime of have seen the golf cart, please contact the Adair County Sheriff’s Office at 641-743-2148.
