CAM gains footing in the second half, takes down Fremont-Mills

Sports

October 30th, 2021 by admin

Fremont-Mills landed the first blow and grabbed a halftime lead over CAM on Friday night in the second round of the 8-Man playoffs. The Cougars responded in the second half and earned a 46-20 victory to advance to the quarterfinals next week.

CAM trailed 12-8 at the break but took the lead for good on the second play of the second half. Lane Spieker hooked up with Colby Rich for a 49-yard touchdown pass on a screen to the right side of the field to make it 14-12 Cougars. CAM went on to score the next four touchdowns of the game to lead by as much as 40-12. Fremont-Mills got one more score with 2:38 left to get within 40-20 before CAM added one more on Lane Spieker’s 6th touchdown run of the game.

Spieker finished with 327 yards and 6 scores on the ground to go along with the scoring toss to Rich. Rich finished with 91 yards receiving for the game. CAM Head Coach Barry Bower was proud of the way the team responded in the second half.

Joe Kauffman was very disruptive on defense, flying into the backfield early all night long to make it difficult for the Knights to get started. Kauffman thought the defense adjusted well to some different looks the Knights showed to begin the game.

CAM improved to 10-0 on the season and will host Newell-Fonda in a quarterfinal game next Thursday. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN with pregame starting at 6:00 p.m. Coach Bower said it’ll be a lot of fun to host a quarterfinal game next week.

Fremont-Mills ends their season with a record of 6-4.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball team has added Eric Steyer to its roster.

Steyer, an Ames, Iowa, native, was a member of the team for three seasons (2018-21), playing in 20 games as a walk-on. He graduated in the spring and is currently in graduate school.

Steyer is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and a recipient of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award.

Steyer’s addition comes about a week after former transfer Blake Hinson announced he was leaving the team before playing in a game for the Cyclones.
