McDonald IV and Purdy earn Big 12 Weekly Player of the Week honors

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State All-Big 12 senior quarterback Brock Purdy and All-Big 12 junior defensive end Will McDonald IV were honored by the Big 12 Conference today for their performances against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Purdy was awarded the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and McDonald IV was the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Purdy was sensational on Saturday, guiding the Cyclones to a 24-21 win over No. 8 Oklahoma State, ISU’s fourth win over a Top 10 team since 2017.

A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy passed for 307 yards, his 13th career 300-yard passing game, on 27-of-33 passing. Purdy is the only player in the nation to complete 80 pct. of his passes in a game four times (min. 15 att.).

He also tossed a pair of touchdowns to Xavier Hutchinson and helped orchestrate a fourth quarter come-from-behind victory for the seventh time in his career.

Purdy has been one of the most accurate passers in the nation this season, ranking second nationally in completion pct. at 75.3 pct. His four 80 pct. completion games all rank in ISU’s single-game Top 11.

Purdy, who has the fifth-most starts among active FBS QBs (40), is the greatest signal-caller in Cyclone history. He currently owns/shares 31 school records, including all-time QB wins (28).

A four-time career winner of the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Purdy is 14-1 vs. Big 12 opponents in his career at Jack Trice Stadium.

McDonald IV, a native of Pewaukee, Wis., is one of the best pass rushers in the nation and he continued his incredible play over the weekend with a dominating performance vs. the Cowboys.

McDonald IV tallied five tackles, 2.0 sacks, two QB hurries and a pass breakup to aid the Cyclones to victory.

With the Cyclones clinging to a 24-21 victory late in the fourth quarter, McDonald IV registered back-to-back sacks to force a Cowboy punt.

McDonald IV leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally in sacks per game at 1.07. His 7.5 sacks on the year already ranks in ISU’s season Top 10 and his 25.0 sacks in his career is 0.5 shy from the school record.

McDonald IV has been the most consistent pass-rusher in the NCAA in the last two seasons, registering 23.0 sacks in his last 23 games.

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by admin

The Tennessee Titans struck early and often and took down the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Nashville 27-3. The Titans scored on their first drive of the game and built a 27-0 lead by halftime.

Kansas City struggled getting the offense going and the defense was gouged early. Patrick Mahomes finished 20-35 for 206 yards and 1 interception. Ryan Tannehill had a nice outing for the Titans with 270 yards passing, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. AJ Brown caught 8 ball for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes sat out the last drive for KC after getting his neck pushed back awkwardly on the previous possession. The team said he came out of protocol fine but held him out as a precaution the rest of the way.

The Chiefs fall to 3-4 on the season and will try to regroup for a Monday Night Football meeting with the New York Giants next week. The Titans improved to 5-2.

Iowa State takes down No. 8 Oklahoma State

Sports

October 24th, 2021 by admin

The Iowa State Cyclones picked up a thrilling 24-21 win over 8th-ranked Oklahoma State on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. Breece Hall ran in from 4 yards out with 5:29 to go in the game to provide the winning margin. The Iowa State defense then came up with two huge stops to seal the victory and send fans pouring onto the field.

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy had a fantastic game going 27-33 for 307 yards with 2 touchdowns. His second touchdown of the day to Xavier Hutchinson tied the game at 14 early in the second half. The 9 yard score came after a touchdown throw to Hutchinson was called back just a few plays earlier on a poor taunting penalty that got the crowd even more raucous down the stretch.

Cowboys quarterback Spencer Sanders went 15-24 on the day for 225 yards and 3 scores, two of those to wideout Brennan Presley.

Iowa State improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12. Oklahoma State suffered their first loss and are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to Morgantown, WV to face the Mountaineers in a 1:00 p.m. CT game next Saturday.

Audubon passes test from Stanton-Essex

Sports

October 23rd, 2021 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers fought their way to a win in the first round of the 8-Man playoffs on Friday night over the Stanton-Essex Vikings 55-20.

The Vikings hit on some big plays early to quiet the crowd for a while at Chis Jones Field. Audubon won the toss and elected to receive the ball. The Wheelers drove down to the Viking 17 yard line and faced a fourth and 7. The Wheelers elected to go for it and the Vikings came up with a big stop, knocking down a pass that could of been a first down play. Three plays later the Vikings struck the scoreboard first with a 59 yard touchdown pass from Josh Martin to Carter Johnson. They added a two point conversion to Quentin Thornburg to go up 8-0. The Wheelers answered quickly on a 58-yard touchdown run to get within 8-7. Both teams then mounted long drives to eventually tie the game at 14 each.

That’s when a big defensive play turned the momentum in Audubon’s favor. Stanton-Essex elected to go for a fourth down attempt at their own 29-yard-line and Garrett Christensen and Cooper Nielsen tracked down Carter Johnson for a 16 yard sack. The Wheelers took over at the 13 yard line and Gavin Smith raced for a touchdown on the next play to put Audubon out front for the first time in the game, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way. After the game Garrett Christensen talked about the thrill of coming up with some big sacks.

Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks thought the entire defense worked together well to force the Vikings into some tough situations. He said they just keep finding guys to step up each week, like Christensen did this week.

Matthew Beisswenger hit on a 42-yard field goal late in the half and the Wheelers led 24-14 at the break. Stanton-Essex didn’t go quietly though as they opened the second half with a 43-yard touchdown run from Carter Johnson to get within 4. The Wheelers would then take over the game with five straight scoring drives and pull away for the win.  Gavin Smith added two more touchdown runs to his five score night during that final stretch. Braden Wessel and Carter Andreasen also had touchdown runs, and Beisswenger connected on a another field goal from 31 yards.

Audubon improves to 8-1 on the year and will advance to the round of 16. Stanton-Essex ends their season with a record of 6-3. Coach Birks said they will take the night to enjoy the win before starting to look at that next opponent tomorrow.

The second half did include a scary moment where Audubon’s Jackson Deist was injured on a first down catch and run. He was put on a stretcher and taken off the field by ambulance with around 3 minutes left in the third quarter. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks said he was responsive and moving his extremities as he left the field so they were hopeful for a positive outcome.
