Iowa’s Riley Moss wins national award

Sports

September 6th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa senior corner Riley Moss has been named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. Moss returned two interceptions for touchdowns in The Hawkeyes’ 34-6 win over 17th ranked Indiana.

His first touchdown came just more than two minutes in and gave the Hawkeyes a 14-0 lead.

Moss says a key was limiting big plays.

ISU downs UNI in close game

(Radio Iowa) – Northern Iowa scored first and kept things close against heavily favored Iowa State throughout the game Saturday –but couldn’t pull it out on the final drive and fell 16-10 in Jack Trice Stadium. Cyclone coach Matt Campbell. “Hard fought win for us, I am really proud of our kids, I certainly give a lot of credit to U-N-I and their kids,” he says. Campbell says he saw some improvement in his team, and also some areas they still need work on. “Little things, like the touchdown, comes on third down, we’ve got them wrapped up for a sack. The slant, got ’em tackled and the guy makes a great play. A couple of offensive possessions you’re talking just a couple areas where you are off on a couple of little things. All things to be really honest with you I think you expect in a first game. Again, that’s a team that really believes and they are not ever going to beat themselves,” Campbell says.

Cyclone running back Breece Hall was held to 69 yards rushing in the game, but did score a touchdown. “Hats off to U-N-I, their defense played a really good game, especially since they just played three or four months ago and they still had that togetherness,” Hall says. Hall says the Cyclones could have played better in the season opener. “I feel like we were happy that we won the game — but we all knew that we could have done a little bit better…we didn’t play perfect today, we didn’t play Iowa State football,” Hall says.

It was the first time since in two years fans were allowed back into the stadium and it was a sell-out crowd. Hall was happy about that. “It was good, for me, I haven’t had that feeling since my freshman year, just getting back into that atmosphere, just getting in front of the fans, getting the student section riled up and everything,” Hall says. Campbell felt the same way. “It was great to be able to have that energy in the stadium. I just think for everybody involved to have some sense of normalcy, was really special,” Campbell says.

U-N-I goes on the road to face Sacramento State Saturday. Iowa State will host Iowa in Ames for the first time in two years as the game in Iowa City last year was canceled by the pandemic.

Iowa State to host College Game Day for second time in three years

Sports

September 4th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa—For the second time in three years, Iowa State will host ESPN’s College GameDay built by the Home Depot on Saturday, Sept. 11, ahead of the Cyclones’ home football game against the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series showdown against Iowa. Kickoff for the sold-out game, which will air on ABC, is set for 3:30 p.m. (Central).

“It is a tremendous privilege to host GameDay twice in three years and a testament to the incredible job Matt Campbell, his staff and student-athletes are doing on and off the football field,” said Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “This will be a tremendous opportunity to showcase Iowa State University, our football program and fans to a national audience. I am confident that our fans will again show out for this special event, just as they did two years ago.”

Iowa State is one of five on-campus sites that have hosted the program twice since 2019, joining Georgia, Clemson, Penn State and Minnesota. ESPN first aired the show in 1987 from its studio, and made its first on-campus appearance in 1993 in South Bend, Ind., ahead of the match-up between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 1 Florida State.

ESPN’s College GameDay, the network’s signature college football pregame show, begins at 8 a.m. (Central) on ESPN. The set will again be located South of MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium in the grassy area between the Sukup End Zone Club and Reiman Gardens. The three-hour show features Rece Davis (host), Lee Corso (analyst), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst), Desmond Howard (analyst), Gene Wojciechowski (contributor), David Pollack (analyst/contributor), Robert Griffin III (analyst/contributor), Chris “Bear” Fallica (researcher/contributor) and Jen Lada (contributor).

Mistakes snowball for Atlantic in loss to Kuemper Catholic

Sports

September 4th, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans fell to the Kuemper Catholic Knights on Friday night 34-0 at Carroll Stadium. It was a very tight game for a little over half of the contest then mistakes started to compound for the Trojans.

Carroll scored on the opening drive of the game with a 48-yard touchdown run from Taye Vonnahme to go up 7-0. That score held until the second half. Atlantic turned the ball over on an interception on their first drive of the second half. 9 plays later the Knights scored on a 1 yard plunge by quarterback Cooper Pottebaum to go up 13-0. The two teams traded a few punts and then Taye Vonnahme ripped off another long run. He rumbled 64-yards on the opening play of a drive with just under a minute left in the third quarter to make it 20-0.

Troubles compounded from there for the Trojans. Atlantic had a bad snap on a punt attempt their next possession and gave the ball back to Kuemper on the 22 yard line. A few plays later Vonnahme fumbled the ball into the end zone but lineman Carter Pudenz got on top of it for another Kuemper TD. Atlantic threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive and Kuemper punched it in on another Vonnahme touchdown run to make it 34-0, and that would prove to be the final score.

Atlantic falls to 0-2 on the season and will head back home to the Trojan Bowl to host Shenandoah next week. Kuemper Catholic moved to 1-1 and will travel to face Greene County in week 3.

Pheasant outlook is good, especially in NW Iowa

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 3rd, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The pheasant season last year saw hunters take the second-highest number of pheasants in more than ten years — and the numbers are lining up for a repeat. D-N-R wildlife biologist, Todd Bogenschutz oversees the roadside survey and says one area stood out. “Up in the northwest, it could be some of the best hunting they’ve seen in years,” he says. Southeastern and eastern Iowa saw fewer birds in this year’s survey — while the overall outlook pretty much mirrored 2020. Bogenschutz says in 2020 they average 20-point-three birds on each route and this year they average 20-point-one birds.

The results showed three of the nine regions — northwest, north-central, west-central averaged at or more than 30 birds on each route — which hasn’t happened since 2007. Bogenschutz says the spring season is always key in determining how many new birds live into the fall. “I think the nesting season overall was generally pretty good. But last winter was particularly tough on southern Iowa,” according to Bogenschutz. “we had snow, and then it warmed up and melted, and then we went sub-zero and got some freezing rain and that happened a couple of times — to the point that by the end of February in southeast Iowa, full-grown adults were walking on top of the snow, and not breaking through.”

Bogenschutz says he’s not too concerned about the recent flooding, as flooding has the most impact in the spring nesting period. “So, April into May and maybe the first part of June. After that flooding doesn’t have near the impact once the chicks are out and grown up a little bit,” Bogenschutz says. “The flooding we had in July and August shouldn’t have hurt the newly hatched chicks as much.” He expects at minimum a repeat of the pheasant harvest from last year. “I’m expecting we’ll have a harvest of around that 250 to 300-thousand mark again,” Bogenschutz says.

The pheasant season opens on October 30th and runs through January 10th.
