CB Riley Moss Will Return for Hawkeyes

Sports

January 5th, 2022 by Jim Field

The Big Ten Conference Defensive Back of the year Riley Moss made the surprise announcement on social media that he will return for another season with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

In his post, Moss said, “I have more goals I want to achieve and this team has more goals to achieve as well.  This has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, and I am confident that I have made the right one.”

Moss is a 6-foot-1, 194-pound cornerback from Ankeny, who set the tone with two interception-return touchdowns in Iowa’s  34-6 season-opening win over Indiana.  The Hawkeye defense set record a school-record with 25 interceptions this season.  Moss has totaled 10 interceptions in his four seasons at Iowa.

Moss had an extra year of eligibility available due to last year’s pandemic-shortened season. He has decided to take that opportunity.

Tri-Center survives late comeback from Riverside

Sports

January 4th, 2022 by admin

The Tri-Center boys basketball team controlled the game against Riverside for three quarters on Tuesday night but had to survive a fourth quarter rally by the Bulldogs to secure a win. The Trojans led by 10 at half and at the end of the third, but the Bulldogs put together a 13-2 run in the final session to momentarily grab the lead. Grady Jeppesen hit a step through lay-up to put Riverside up 61-60 with around 2 minutes left but Tri-Center struck back. Junior Michael Turner drove down the court and hit a tough angled banker and got fouled to put Tri-Center back in front for good. The Bulldogs tried to extend the game with fouls but Turner and Kent Elliott hit 6 straight free throws to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Turner finished with 19 points and Elliott added 18 to help the Trojans improve to 5-3 on the season. Tri-Center Head Coach Chad Harder loved the way his team finished under pressure.

Coach Harder said they expect Turner to come up with big plays when they need him and was proud of his effort. Jaxon Johnson was also a spark for Tri-Center with 15 points on 5 made threes in the game. Free throws made a big difference at the end of the game despite struggles for the Trojans early in the game, going just 6-12 in the first half. Coach Harder said his guys have enough experience in those tough spots to lean on.

Coach Harder felt like the game was a growth boost for the team.

Riverside was led by 25 points from Aiden Bell. He was a big part of the fourth quarter rally with three 3’s in the period. Jeppesen finished with 16 points and Ayden Salias added 12. The Bulldogs fall to 5-6 on the season.

Heiny sparks Riverside to rare win over Tri-Center

Sports

January 4th, 2022 by admin

Riverside senior Morgan Heiny hit four 3’s and finished with 15 points to lead Riverside to a 39-29 win over Tri-Center on Tuesday night in Oakland. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, falling behind by 6 midway through the first quarter, but rallied to an 8 point lead by halftime. The Bulldogs held the lead near the 7-10 point range most of the rest of the way. Bulldogs Coach Mitch Rice talked about what got the team rolling in the second quarter.

Freshman Elly Henderson had a nice game as well with 11 points. She made a couple of big baskets and defensive plays at the beginning of the fourth quarter to keep the Bulldogs in control. Coach Rice said she still makes some freshman mistakes but is developing into a big time player for their program. The win pushed the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record on the season and Coach Rice said it was another milestone.

Tri-Center was led by 8 points from Alexis Flaherty. The Trojans are now 2-6 on the season.

Pop-up Broomball program set for Saturday, in Atlantic

Sports

January 4th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic Parks and Rec Department is hosting a pop-up program of Broomball, this Saturday January 8th, beginning at 1-p.m.  The event takes place on the ice-skating rink at Sunnyside Park.  Parks and Rec Director Bryant Rasmussen explains, Broomball and hockey are quite similar in terms of strategy, but there are a few key differences.

First, broomball players don’t wear skates.  Second, the sport uses a small ball instead of a puck. And instead of hockey sticks, players use brooms. Bring your brooms and learn a new sport.  If you have any questions, please call the Parks & Rec Department at 712-243-3542.
