TODAY…SUNNY…BREEZY. HIGH IN THE UPPER 50S. NORTHWEST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 30 MPH.

TONIGHT…MOSTLY CLEAR. LOW IN THE MID 30S. NORTHEAST WIND NEAR 10 MPH SHIFTING TO THE SOUTHEAST AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SATURDAY…SUNNY. HIGH IN THE UPPER 60S. SOUTH WIND 5 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 25 MPH.

NWS: Tornado touched down in eastern Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Severe weather making its way across eastern Iowa has produced at least one tornado. The National Weather Service confirms that a tornado was located around 5:25 p.m. Thursday in rural Donahue, south of DeWitt. It was reportedly moving east at 50 mph toward Clinton but wasn’t expected to continue into Illinois.

Meteorologist John Haase says there have been no reports of structural damage. He says the tornado caused some blown-over semitrucks and uprooted or damaged trees. Hail as large as ping pong balls was predicted in the area. Tornado warnings have been cancelled in Clinton and Scott counties. Several eastern Iowa counties remained under a tornado watch until 8 p.m.

DENSE FOG WITH VISIBILITIES OF A QUARTER MILE OR LESS WILL CONTINUE OVER PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL IOWA THROUGH SUNRISE…MAINLY FROM INTERSTATE 35 AND WESTWARD ALONG HIGHWAYS 92 AND 34. MOTORISTS SHOULD SLOW DOWN…USE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS…AND ALLOW FOR GREATER STOPPING DISTANCE BETWEEN VEHICLES UNTIL CONDITIONS IMPROVE WITH THE PASSAGE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH 700 AM.

Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 5pm. Areas of fog before 9am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 46 by 4pm. Windy, with an east northeast wind 7 to 12 mph becoming northwest 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then a chance of rain between 7pm and 8pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 35. Windy, with a west wind 21 to 26 mph decreasing to 9 to 14 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.
Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 36. North northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming south southeast after midnight.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Breezy, with a south wind 7 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Breezy.

A FEW ISOLATED STORMS ARE POSSIBLE THIS EVENING WITH ANY SEVERE
THREAT FROM LARGE HAIL. THUNDERSTORMS WILL BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON THURSDAY…LARGE HAIL WILL BE THE MAIN THREAT. DAMAGING WINDS WILL ALSO BE A THREAT MAINLY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80.

ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH MIDDAY THURSDAY. LARGE HAIL WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE MAIN THREAT.

THERE WILL ALSO BE THE THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS STARTING SUNDAY AND CONTINUING INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER APPEARS LOW AT THIS TIME.

ADDITIONAL STORMS SHOULD DEVELOP LATER TONIGHT AS LIFT INCREASES WITH DEVELOPMENT A LOW LEVEL JET AND AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVING IN FROM THE WEST. A FEW STORMS MAY PRODUCE LARGE HAIL INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS.

THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY: THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER AT LEAST PARTS OF THE AREA FROM SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

 

Storm/Hail reports, 4/8/15

Severe thunderstorms that evolved in southwest Iowa this (Wednesday) morning, spread from Adams into Adair Counties. Emergency Management officials reported pea-to quarter-size (1″ diameter) hail fell about a mile northwest of Corning at around 9:15-a.m.  A couple of minutes later, officials said quarter- to golf ball-size hail was falling in Corning.  The storm event last about 35-minutes before the cell producing the hail began to weaken and fall below warning criteria.

Other cells formed in central Iowa, bringing pea to quarter sized hail to the Des Moines metro area over the noon hour. There were no immediate reports of damage.

ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORM CHANCES RETURN THURSDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT
