Sweethearts Snowshoe Hike set for Feb. 18th

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

February 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Cass County Conservation Board is holding Sweetheart Snowshoe Hike. The Sweetheart Snowshoe Hike will be held at the Pellett Memorial Woods outside of Atlantic, on February 19th, beginning at 7-p.m. Come out for a great night hike, who knows what nature has waiting for you that evening! Snowshoes (variety of sizes) will be available.

Drive the short drive and hike off that dinner! Those in attendance will hike and try to call in various species of Owls that may be in the park that night! Of course this qualifies for the 120 hour Outdoor Challenge, so don’t forget to use #120hrsCassCoIA as a hashtag for your adventures.

The event will, of course, be canceled if there is no snow. Dress for the weather if there is snow on the ground.

Too much Super Bowl cheer could lead to an OWI — or worse

News, Sports

February 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – For many Iowans, Super Bowl Sunday means camping out in front of the big screen, watching football, snacking on pizza and sipping a few adult beverages. That’s all fine, as long as you don’t plan to drive after too much imbibing. Trooper Paul Gardner of Fort Dodge says the Iowa State Patrol is partnering with local law enforcement agencies across the state in a two-day effort. “On Sunday afternoon and into the evening, we’re going to be looking out for drunk drivers,” Gardner says. “Then on Monday, we’re going to be back at it, focusing on the morning commute, watching for people who are speeding and also looking for distracted drivers out there as well.”

Gardner offers some advice to fans, motorists and Super Bowl party hosts. “We know a lot of these parties contain alcoholic beverages and we are strongly encouraging those who are watching the game and drinking, have a designated driver on hand. Don’t get behind the wheel,” Gardner says. “If you know of somebody who’s going to get behind the wheel and they’re intoxicated, don’t let them do so. Get them a cab or get them a ride home.” No matter who wins the big game, Gardner says he’ll consider it a win if there are no traffic fatalities statewide all weekend.

Iowa rolls at Maryland 110-87

Sports

February 10th, 2022 by admin

Jordan Bohannon set an Iowa record with 10 three pointers as the Hawkeyes hammered defenseless Maryland 110-87. As a team the Hawkeyes canned 19 treys and shot 60 percent to even their Big Ten record at 6-6.

Bohannon says the move back to the point has helped.

Bohannon says he gets more offensive looks at the point.

Bohannon finished with 30 points as did Keegan Murray and coach Fran McCaffery says everything was working on offense.

The Hawkeyes host Nebraska Sunday afternoon.

Ban on transgender athletes participating in girls sports advances

Sports

February 10th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A bill that would ban transgender athletes from competing in girls sports in Iowa has cleared a House subcommittee after a nearly hour-long public hearing. Poppy Malone of Boone, a 7th grader in Ames Middle School, testified in favor of the bill.

Malone recently pinned an opponent just 27 seconds into a match at Woodward Granger High School. Trans athlete Gavy Smith of Decorah testified against the bill. She told legislators she participates in volleyball, bowling and track and field.

Ainsley Erzen of Carlisle won the 800-meter race at the girl’s state track meet last year and will attend the University of Arkansas next year on an athletic scholarship. She favors the legislation.

A lobbyist for the Iowa Association of School Boards told lawmakers the bill would force school officials to choose between following state law or federal guidelines that prohibit discrimination in sports based on gender identity. Dr. Katherine Imboric (im-BOR-ick), co-director of the L-G-B-T-Q Clinic at the University of Iowa, told lawmakers sports are an antitode to the challenges trans gender students face.

Republican lawmakers in at least 10 states have passed laws prohibiting trans athletes from participating in girls sports. In late April, Republican Governor Reynolds called on legislators to pass a bill banning trans girls and women from competing in school sports that match their gender identity. The two Republican lawmakers who co-sponsored the bill to accomplish that goal voted to advance it out of a House subcommittee today (Thursday). The bill is likely to be considered in a full House Committee next week.
