St. Albert pulls away from Atlantic

Sports

January 10th, 2022 by admin

St. Albert turned a 4 point halftime lead into a 16 point lead by the end of the third quarter and picked up a road win over Atlantic on Monday night. The Saintes won the game 56-33 to improve to 7-4.

The Saintes jumped on top early 12-4 by the end of the first quarter, with the Trojans failing to score a field goal in the period. A 7-0 run by Atlantic got them right back in the game but the Saintes did enough to hold the lead at the break 20-16. Lena Rosloniec and Grace Manz scored 6 each in the third to help the Saintes pull away. Atlantic Coach Dan Vargason thought his team got sped up and unsettled by the Saintes.

Coach Vargason called multiple timeouts in the third quarter, upset with the effort and energy his team had. He said the energy was just lacking.

Pearl Reisz led the Saintes with 15 points, hitting a couple of threes in the fourth. Manz scored 11 and Rosloniec had 10.

Atlantic was led by 9 from Aubrey Guyer and 8 each from Paytn Harter and Jada Jensen. The Trojans fall to 3-9 on the season. They will host Clarinda on Tuesday night.

Iowa State’s Ryan named Big 12 Player of the Week

Sports

January 10th, 2022 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Emily Ryan’s outstanding work leading No. 9 Iowa State to a 2-0 week was recognized this week as the Cyclone point guard was named the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. This marks the first time Ryan has been named Player of the Week, and the second honor of the season for the Cyclones, with Ashley Joens getting one in November.

Ryan, a sophomore from Claflin, Kansas, had started to gain notoriety for her prowess distributing the basketball, but it was her work in the scoring column that stood out across the past week. At No. 23 Oklahoma last Wednesday, Ryan recorded a career-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting while also dishing out eight assists and four rebounds to lead the Cyclones to an 81-71 win in Norman. Ryan got 15 of her 22 points in the second half and played all but 36 seconds of the game.

She followed that up with another high-scoring outing against TCU Saturday at Hilton Coliseum, posting 16 points which included going 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

For the week, Ryan averaged 19.0 points per game (third-best in the Big 12) and 5.5 assists per game (second in the league). Her work has helped ISU out to a 3-0 start in Big 12 play for the first time since 2013-14.

Ryan and the No. 9 Cyclones are back in action on Tuesday night at No. 25 Kansas State. Tip between ISU and K-State will be at 6:30 p.m. on Big 12 Now on ESPN+

Clark named Big Ten Player of the Week

Sports

January 10th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Clark has tallied 26-career Big Ten weekly honors – 13 freshman, eight player and five honor roll. This is her third Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season — Dec. 6, Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.

In two games last week, Clark, a Des Moines, Iowa, native averaged 30.5 points, 8.5 assists, and 5.5 rebounds. In both games, she filled her stat line, adding two blocks and three steals on the week.

Clark drew 18 fouls, making it to the free-throw line 22 times. Against Northwestern, she was a perfect 13-for-13 — her second perfect game over with 10-free throws or more — and missed just one of her nine free throws at Nebraska.

At Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, Clark registered her sixth double-double of the season and the 16th of her career.

Clark and the Hawkeyes return to action Thursday, Jan. 13 in West Lafayette, Indiana, as they take on the Purdue Boilermakers inside Mackey Arena. Tip is set for 6 p.m. (CT) on B1G+.

Iowa wrestling steams past Purdue

Sports

January 9th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A top-five victory by freshman Drake Ayala and string of bonus-point wins sent the top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team past No. 15 Purdue, 36-4, on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes scored bonus points in five matches and won nine-of-10 overall to extend their winning streak to 26 straight duals, the longest in the country.

After falling to a top 10 opponent in his Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut on Friday, Ayala responded Sunday with takedowns in the second and third periods, forcing a stall call and piling up more than three minutes of riding time in a 6-1 win over No. 5 Devin Schroder.

“I just kept looking at my coaches and they kept telling me to keep him down, so that’s I what I did,” Ayala said. “I’m learning a lot every day. I’m pretty young, so being in here, it’s a learning experience. It’s fun. I love it.”

UP NEXT

The top-ranked Hawkeyes travel to Evanston, Illinois to face No. 23 Northwestern on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. (CT).

Bolton’s scoop and score propels Chiefs to win over the Broncos

Sports

January 8th, 2022 by admin

Nick Bolton returned a fumble 86-yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 28-24 on Saturday.

The win keeps the Chiefs’ hopes alive for the top overall seed in the AFC. They need a win by the Houston Texans over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday to put them back on top of the Conference.

Patrick Mahomes threw for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns to help the Chiefs to their 12th win of the season. Mecole Hardman led Chiefs receivers with 103 yard on 8 catches in the game.

Drew Lock started at quarterback for the Broncos and threw for 162 yards, but it was his feet that were the issue. Lock finished with just 35 yards rushing but scored 2 touchdowns. The Broncos were leading 21-17 and driving into Chiefs territory when Bolton came up with the big scoop and sore.

It was the 13th straight victory for the Chiefs over the division-rival Broncos.
