No. 6 Iowa State women visit No. 15 Texas Wednesday night

Sports

February 16th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The sixth ranked Iowa State women take the Big 12 lead on the road to 15th ranked Texas tonight (Wednesday night). It begins a big week for the Cyclones that finds them hosting second place Oklahoma this weekend.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Longhorns beat the Cyclones 66-48 in Ames last month and neither Ashley or Aubrey Joens played in that game.

Fennelly feels better about playing Texas at full strength.

Iowa State is 10-2 in the Big 12.

Drake hosts Evansville Wednesday night

Sports

February 16th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Drake coach Darian DeVries says the Bulldogs need to eliminate mistakes at crunch time. The Bulldogs host Evansville tonight (Wednesday night) and a three game losing streak has dropped them from the top spot in the Missouri Valley race all the way to fifth.

DeVries says mistakes are magnified in a season like this when there are so many close games.

With a short bench and two key starters playing through injuries DeVries says rest is important during the final couple of weeks of the season.

Meredith Rich hits the go-ahead three

The CAM Cougars rallied from a five point deficit to start the fourth quarter and took a 54-45 win over St. Albert in a Class 1A Region 8 Quarterfinal game on Tuesday night in Anita.

It was a great back and forth battle. Ella Klusman buried a three at the end of the third to fire up the Saintes. CAM responded as Reese Snyder opened the fourth with a three and CAM went on an 11-2 run to grab the edge. CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum talked about handling the momentum swings.

In the midst of that run Meredith Rich hit a huge corner three to put CAM back on top 44-42. She talked about the excitement of the moment.

Rich said they just wanted to stay with the plan heading to the fourth.

Eva Steffensen had a huge game with 21 points and came up with a number of key deflections and steals. Coach Wollum said it’s great to have her versatility out there.

CAM improved to 19-4 on the season and earned a rematch of a regular season loss at Stanton on Friday in the Regional Semifinals. Coach Wollum said they are ready for the challenge.

St. Albert was led by 13 points from Klusman and 10 from Missy Evezic. The Saintes end their season with a record of 14-8.

Iowa State visits TCU Tuesday night

Sports

February 15th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger says a lack of motivation is not an issue as the Cyclones get ready for tonight’s (Tuesday night’s) game at TCU. ISU is 3-9 in the Big 12 and has lost four straight games.

Otzelberger says after playing harder than all of their non-conference opponents the margin of error is smaller in the Big 12.

Otzelberger says better offense will help on the defensive end.

TCU beat the Cyclones 59-44 in Ames last month and Otzelberger says his team needs a better start.

A key will be keeping TCU off the offensive boards.

Northern Iowa looks to bounce back Tuesday night at Illinois State

Sports

February 15th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The UNI men will need to move on quickly from Sunday’s blowout loss at Loyola as the Panthers get ready to visit Illinois State tonight (Tuesday night). The Panthers are 10-4 in the Missouri Valley after an 85-58 loss to the Ramblers.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson who says his team should have no problem moving on.

Jacobson says having several players who have been through a title chase is a plus.

With Noah Carter playing the center spot Jacobson is concerned about Illinois State’s size.

Illinois State fired head coach Dan Mueller on Sunday but he will finish the season. Mueller also played at Illinois State.
