Stetson shocks Drake 23-21 with last-play touchdown

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Steven Burdette scooped up teammate Jack Bowen’s lateral and scooted eight yards into the end zone as time ran out to lift Stetson to a stunning 23-21 win over Drake on Saturday.

The Hatters (4-1, 2-1 Pioneer League) had a first-and-10 at the Drake 15 with nine seconds to play. Colin McGovern was forced to scramble before he found Bowen at the 10. Bowen was gang-tackled at the eight as time ran out but the ball squirted out and Burdette snapped it up, racing untouched into the end zone while the Bulldogs celebrated.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1) pulled off a stunner of their own less than a minute earlier. Getting the ball back on their 24 with 57 seconds left, Grant Kraemer found Devin Cates wide open over the middle and he raced untouched for a 76-yard touchdown on the next play.

That left too much time for McGovern, who had the ball on his 35 with 39 seconds to go. He had three straight completions, with Bowen covering 13 and Burdette 17. McGovern finished 29 of 44 for 271 yards. Burdette had an earlier touchdown and Donald Parham had 12 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Kraemer went 19 of 36 for 277 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

VIRGIL BOOS, 93, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Oct. 13th, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, in Greenfield. Graveside services for VIRGIL BOOS will be held 10-a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18th, at the Massena Center Cemetery, north of Massena. Steen Funeral Home in Massena has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wed., Oct. 17th, from 3-until 8-p.m., with the family present from 6-until 8-p.m.; Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Virgil Boos Memorial Fund, to be established by the family at a later date.

Mason City man sentenced to prison for 2017 stabbing death

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of another man. The Globe Gazette reports that 21-year-old Braedon Bowers was sentenced Friday in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

Bowers was found guilty in August of voluntary manslaughter. He had been charged with first-degree murder in the May 30, 2017, stabbing of 23-year-old Wraymond Todd in Mason City. Todd died five days later.

Bowers has maintained that he did not intend to kill Todd. His attorneys said Bowers was acting in self-defense.

Stanley propels Iowa to 42-16 victory over Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 320 yards and a season-high six touchdowns, and the Iowa Hawkeyes beat the Indiana Hoosiers 42-16 in Big Ten action on Saturday. Stanley connected with nine different wide receivers, completing 21 of 33 throws in a game where he was only sacked once.

Indiana’s opening drive looked promising, as the Hoosiers took the ball deep into Hawkeye territory, but the Iowa defense doubled down in the red zone and held the Hoosiers to a field goal, setting the tone for what would become an abysmal day on offense for Indiana. On the ensuing drive, Stanley threw an interception, but a pass interference call negated the turnover, setting up a 9-yard touchdown pass to TJ Hockenson.

Stanley relied on his tight ends heavily, connecting with Noah Fant and Hockenson for eight of his 21 completions. The two tight ends accounted for 208 of Stanley’s 320 passing yards, with Fant finishing the game with 101 yards and Hockenson totaling 107 yards.

Indiana was trailing 14-3 when Stanley made his only mistake of the day, an errant pass right in the direction of Hoosiers defender Thomas Allen, who set Indiana up in Iowa territory following his interception. On the next play of the game, Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey found Ty Fryfogle in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown that made it a 14-10 Iowa lead. Ramsey finished with one touchdown and two interceptions, completing 31 of 42 pass attempts for 263 yards.

But Iowa’s offense was too much for the Hoosiers thanks to the Hawkeyes’ passing attack. The Hawkeyes went into the half with a 21-10 lead and never looked back, spoiling Indiana’s homecoming weekend.

The Hawkeyes will become bowl eligible with a win next Saturday, when they host Maryland.

Democratic Sen. Harris to make campaign trip to Iowa

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California has scheduled her first campaign trip to Iowa before Election Day, stoking speculation about a potential 2020 presidential campaign.
The first-term senator plans stops on Oct. 22-23 in what will be her first visit to nation’s leadoff presidential caucus state since she was elected in 2016. She was last in Iowa when, as San Francisco’s district attorney, she campaigned for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential bid.

Harris is among a large group of Democrats, including several senators, who are contemplating a challenge to President Donald Trump. She has won increased attention in recent weeks for her visible role on the Senate Judiciary Committee in opposition to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Harris, a former California attorney general, has campaigned actively for other Democrats running in the 2018 elections, raising and donating more than $6.5 million for candidates and committees this cycle, spokeswoman Lily Adams said.

The senator will stop in Des Moines on Oct. 22 and end her trip in the Cedar Rapids area on Oct. 23 with stops also in between, Adams said. During her trip, Harris is expected to speak at an event organized by the Polk County Democrats in Des Moines. She offered her first Iowa endorsement during the summer, announcing her support for Deidre DeJear, running for secretary of state. She is Iowa’s first black nominee for statewide office from a major political party.

Iowa has long been a prime destination for any potential presidential candidate. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., recently headlined a party dinner in Des Moines and former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently campaigned for Fred Hubbell, the party’s candidate for governor. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has scheduled stops in Iowa later this month.

No winning Mega Millions ticket, jackpot now $654 million

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — No winning lottery ticket was sold for the Mega Millions drawing Friday night, meaning the jackpot climbs to $654 million. Mega Millions officials say no tickets matched all six numbers to claim the estimated $548 million grand prize. The numbers were 4, 24, 46, 61, 70 and Mega Ball 7.

The next drawing will be Tuesday. The estimated jackpot for that drawing would be the fourth largest lottery prize in U.S. history. The jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

It costs $2 to play the game, but the odds of instant wealth aren’t good. The chance of matching all six numbers and winning the jackpot is one in 302.5 million. Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Audubon Police Report 10/12/2018

The Audubon Police Department reports four arrests in the past few weeks.

On September 24th Audubon Police arrested 26-year-old Jacob Ryan Craft of Council Bluffs for two counts of Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Theft 2nd Degree, and Driving without a Valid License. Craft was booked in the Audubon County Jail on $15,000 bond.

On September 30th Officers arrested 30-year-old Jessica Lynn Pedrinof Audubon for Filing a False Report. Pedrin was released on a promise to appear after appearing before a magistrate.

On October 7th Audubon Police arrested 27-year-old Scott Belew of Audubon for Driving While Barred. Belew was later released on a promise to appear.

On Wednesday October 12th Audubon Police arrested 24-year-old Garrett Christopher Kelley of Burlington on a charge of Driving while Suspended. Kelly was released on a promise to appear.
