(UPDATE 5/9/25) Bottled water advisory to remain in place for City of Kimballton

News

May 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

KIMBALLTON, Iowa — Officials with the City of Kimballton, Friday afternoon, said that the City notified the Iowa DNR Field Office in Atlantic, that during the effort to refill the water tower from Tuesday’s incident, sodium permanganate was overfed, resulting in pink water throughout the distribution system.
Sodium permanganate is used as an oxidizing agent in drinking water and wastewater treatment to help with iron and manganese removal. The pink water will be flushed out of the distribution system in phases once levels in the water tower return to normal.
The City issued a public notice for manganese health advisory level exceedance on April 11th. Sample results have been received and are below the health advisory level, but the sodium permanganate overfeed will require a new public notice to be issued for adolescents and adults. The bottled water advisory will remain in place until manganese samples can be collected and results are below the health advisory level (HAL).
Although manganese is a common, naturally-occurring mineral found in rocks, soil, groundwater, and surface water, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a health advisory level for manganese in drinking water of 0.3 mg/L, which is intended to be protective of lifetime exposure for the general population. Further, the US EPA recommends that the general population should not ingest water with manganese concentrations greater than 1 mg/L for more than a total of 10 days per year.
Please do not give the water to adults and children of any age. Adults, children, and infants who drink water containing manganese above the health advisory level may be associated with adverse health effects.
• Water, juice, and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water. Bottled or other water low in manganese should be used for infants until further notice.
• DO NOT BOIL THE WATER. Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the manganese level. Excessive boiling can make the manganese more concentrated because manganese remains behind when the water evaporates.
Additional information about manganese can be found here: Manganese in Drinking Water Fact Sheet and Frequently Asked Questions

Senators adjourn for the week without a vote on pipeline bill

Ag/Outdoor, News

May 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Republican Senators met for hours today (Friday) to privately debate restrictions on the proposed Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline, then emerged late this (Friday) afternoon and adjourned for the week without taking any public action. Pipeline opponents say it was a stunning development after being told a bill would come up for a vote. Dennis King, a fourth generation farmer from Clay County, says the bill easily passed the House weeks ago with 85 out of 100 possible votes.

A dozen Republican senators have vowed to boycott votes on state spending plans until the senate votes to limit the pipeline company’s authority to seize land for the project.

Cindy Hanson and her sister are opposed to having the pipeline on their family’s Century Farm in Shelby County.

Monte Shaw of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was at the capitol all day, too, lobbying against any move by legislators that would block the pipeline’s construction.

Having senators shelve the bill is also a win for the ethanol industry.

The senate’s only votes today (Friday) were to confirm three officials to seats on state boards and commissions and made changes in an education related bill.

Supreme Court throws out lawsuit on English only election documents

News

May 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa Supreme Court has reversed a lower court ruling from a group seeking to allow the printing of election documents in languages other than English. Radio Iowa’s Dar Danielson reports.

(As said) The League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, argued the law hampered its voter registration efforts and forced it to spend additional money and resources. The Iowa Supreme Court ruling says an organization’s expenditure of resources in response to a law that does not violate, regulate, or determine the litigant’s rights, status, or legal relations is not a legally recognizable injury. The Court says, for that reason, the group lacks standing to bring the lawsuit.

2 injured when a pickup & tractor collided in northern IA, Friday

News

May 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Charles City, Iowa) – Two people were injured this (Friday) morning in northern Iowa, when a pickup and a tractor collided. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2024 Ford F-650 driven by 37-year-old Trevor D. Winfrey, of Rockwell, was traveling north on Highway 218 in Floyd County, at around 8:10-a.m., when the pickup struck a northbound John Deere tractor that was pulling a planter.

The impact caused the tractor/planter to spin around and enter the ditch before flipping over. The driver of the tractor, 54-year-old William J. Ruzicka, of Charles City, was ejected from the tractor. The pickup truck came to rest upright in the ditch.

Winfrey and Ruzicka were transported by ambulance to the Floyd County Medical Center. The crash remained under investigation. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Charles City Fire Department and AMR Ambulance.

Cong. Hinson confident US/UK trade deal will benefit Iowa farmers

Ag/Outdoor, News

May 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she’s enthusiastic about the trade agreement reached Thursday between the United States and the United Kingdom. Hinson, a Republican from Marion, says there’s promise the new accord will mean Iowa farmers will find more avenues to sell their products in the U-K and elsewhere, though only portions of the deal are being unveiled.

Initial reports of the trade agreement say the U-K will be making the customs process smoother, while buying more American commodities, including beef and ethanol.

As part of the trade deal, reports say President Trump agreed to cut tariffs on U-K-made vehicles, steel and aluminum, but the original ten-percent tariff on British goods is to remain in place. Hinson remains optimistic more trade agreements are pending with other nations.

Reports say the Brits also agreed to reduce tariffs on hundreds of U-S products, everything from sporting goods to olive oil.
