Denison Monarch Relays cancelled on Thursday

Sports

March 31st, 2022 by admin

A number of area track and field teams were set to get the outdoor season in full swing at the Denison Monarch Relays tonight but mother nature isn’t going to allow that to happen. The Monarch Relays have been cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. Much of Western Iowa received a bit of snow overnight and temperatures are expected to only reach the low 40’s today. Atlantic was set to start their outdoor campaign there but will now have to wait until next week.

The Hawkeye 10 South Meet that was to be held in Glenwood on Thursday has also been cancelled.

Northern Iowa’s Mark Farley talks about depth

Sports

March 31st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Northern Iowa football coach Mark Farley says roster management is a key during spring drills. Farley says because of COVID seniors there are some areas that need added depth.

Farley says the areas of concern right now are the secondary and defensive line.

Theo Day returns at quarterback. The redshirt junior passed for more than 23 hundred yards and 16 touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Matt Morrisey will also compete for the job after appearing in two games last season.

The Panthers close out spring drills April 23rd.

Iowa State’s Jon Heacock talks spring drills

Sports

March 31st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock says the recipe for success will remain the same even though many of the faces have changed. The Cyclones lost several veterans on defense, including safety Greg Eisworth and former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Mike Rose at linebacker, off of last year’s team that finished 7-6.

Heacock hopes new leaders emerge during spring drills.

Heacock expects veterans like defensive end Will McDonald and linebacker O’Rien Vance to step up.

Iowa OC Brian Ferentz on spring drills

Sports

March 31st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz says his job is to make the Iowa offense better and criticism comes with the territory. The Hawkeyes ranked next to last in the Big Ten in total offense last season despite a 10-4 record and a west division title.

Ferentz on the criticism that comes from being the play caller.

Ferentz says he is trying to get redshirt freshman Joe Labas up to speed this spring so he is able to compete against Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla. He says no decision will be made on a starting quarterback until preseason practice.

Ferentz was named the quarterbacks coach after Ken O’Keefe retired and says his new role is to help them do their job better.

Ferentz says he is impressed by what it takes to be a successful quarterback.

Atlantic tennis has strong numbers and good competition for spots

Sports

March 30th, 2022 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic tennis teams are gearing up for a new season with strong numbers. The girls team has 27 players out and the boys have a good number with 17 players.

The girls squad will look to replace some of their top players with the graduation of Tessa and Nellie Grooms, Genevieve Martinez, and Olivia Engler. Head Coach Mike McDermott said some players that did get some varsity experience will need to step up to take on bigger roles.

The boys team lost a top player in Grant Sturm but his brother Ethan will be counted on to lead the way.

Clevi Johnson has improved and slid into the number two spot early on. Bryan York and Hunter Weppler are also experienced players that will be key contributors. There will be some strong competition on both sides for the final varsity spots.

Coach McDermott said the early season work is a mixture of working on fundamentals and trying to formulate a lineup. He said early on in competition they aren’t as concerned with results as they are on effort and improvement. As the coach of both the boys and girls teams Coach McDermott said both squads help push each other.

The teams will open up the season on Tuesday, April 5th against Kuemper Catholic.
