Iowa State women beat West Virginia to reach Big 12 Semis

The Iowa State women’s basketball team advanced past West Virginia 66-60 at the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City. The Cyclones weathered a couple scoring droughts in the quarterfinal game to advance on to the semifinals Saturday. A 20-9 second quarter advantage propelled the Cyclones to the win.

Emily Ryan and Lexi Donarski each scored 14 points and Ashley Joens had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Cyclones. Iowa State improves to 27-5 on the season.

Next up the Cyclones will face Texas in the semifinals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The game will be televised on ESPN+

Creighton rips past Providence to get to Big East Title Game

The Creighton Bluejays ripped past the top-seeded Providence Friars 85-58 on Friday to reach the Big East Tournament Championship Game. The Bluejays busted out to a 42-27 lead by half and kept their foot on the gas in the second.

Atlantic’s Ryan Hawkins had 8 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Alex O’Connell led four players in double-figures with 18. Arthur Kaluma had 17 and Ryan Kalkbrenner and Trey Alexander each added 15.

The Bluejays improve to 23-10 on the season. They will meet Villanova in the Big East Tournament Championship game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Central Time at Madison Square Garden.

No. 24 Iowa beats Rutgers at B1G Tournament

After a slow start Iowa took control at the Big Ten Tournament.

Gary Dolphin and Bobby Hansen on the Hawkeye Network. The Hawkeyes led by as many as 18 in an 84-74 win, Friday, over Rutgers.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Keegan Murray had 26 points. Jordan Bohannon added 16 as did sophomore guard Tony Perkins.

The Hawkeyes play Indiana in today’s (Saturday’s) semifinals. The Hoosiers stunned top seeded Illinois in Friday’s first game. The tip-off is at Noon.

Friday, March 11

Class 1A Championship

North Linn, Troy Mills 52, Grand View Christian 48

North Linn grinded out a State Title by handing Grand View Christian their only loss of the season.North Linn had a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter and held on. Dylan Kurt had 16 points and 5 rebounds. Tate Haughenbury added 15 points and 6 boards. The Lynx finish at 27-1.

Grand View Christian was led by 15 points and 18 rebounds from 7-footer Daniel Tobiloba. The Thunder finish 26-1.

The Lynx grab their second championship in the past four years. They won the Class 2A title in 2019, were runners-up in 2A in 2020, and runners-up in 1A in 2021. The Lynx also got a little bit of program revenge after losing in the 2018 1A title game to Grand View Christian.

Class 2A Championship

Rock Valley 74, Central Lyon, Rock Rapids 51

Rock Valley jumped out front early with a 17-6 edge in the first quarter and rolled to a title. Landyn Van Kekerix had 26 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block to lead the Rockets. Brys Van Grootheest had another big outing with 25 points and 3 steals. The Rockets finish at 22-5. Central Lyon got 15 points and 3 assists from Zach Lutmer and they end the season at 24-3.

Class 3A Championship

Dallas Center-Grimes 56, Central DeWitt 53

Dallas Center-Grimes built a 9 point lead through three quarters and had to fend off a Central DeWitt rally to win the 3A crown. Jacob Runyan poured in 31 points and had 4 assists to lead the Mustangs. Bo Huston and Cole Glasgow each added 10 points as DC-G finishes 22-5. Central DeWitt got 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists from Shawn Gilbert. They finish the year 20-7.

Class 4A Championship

Ames 68, Johnston 37

The Little Cyclones roared their way to a state championship with a dominating effort against the Dragons. It was 17-8 after the first quarter and a 20-point lead by half. Iowa State signee Tamin Lipsey finished his prep career with a triple-double of 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Trevion LeBeaux dropped in 18 points and had 5 boards. Lucas Lueth added 12 points as the Little Cyclones finish 23-3. Johnston was led by 15 points from Trey Lewis and their season finished with a record of 21-4.

Iowa State sputters at Big 12 Tourney

Iowa State couldn’t handle the tight defensive pressure from Texas Tech and fell 72-41 in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament Thursday night. Tech was able to pull out to a 19 point lead by halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.

The Red Raiders scored 20 points off of 20 ISU turnovers and outscored the Cyclones 42-14 in the paint. Tech also had 23 points on  the fast break.

The Red Raiders were led by 15 points and 4 rebounds from Terrence Shannon Jr. Kevin McCullar added 11 points an Kevin Obanor and Adonis Arms both added 10. Tech improves to 24-8 on the season.

Iowa State was led by 9 points from freshman Tyrese Hunter. The Cyclones are now 20-12 on the season and will await their postseason fate to be announced on Sunday.

 

Drake women advance at MVC Tourney with win over Bradley

The Drake women’s basketball team started off their Missouri Valley Conference Tournament run with a 71-56 win over Bradley.

The Bulldogs jumped out front early with an 18-10 first quarter and led by 13 by halftime. A 13-0 run by Drake to start the fourth quarter fully sealed the deal.

Maggie Bair led Drake with 17 points and Anna Miller had 10 points. The Bulldogs improved to 18-12 on the season.

Next up Drake will face 2nd-seeded Missouri State in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

UNI is the three seed and they will face Valparaiso at 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

Class 2A Semifinals

Central Lyon, Rock Rapids 57, Pella Christian 51
Central Lyon jumped out to a 21-13 lead after the first quarter and did enough to hold on the rest of the way. Cooper Spiess led the Lions with 15 points and 3 assists. Zach Lutmer added 10 points and everyone that got on the floor scored for Central Lyon. The Lions improved to 24-2 on the season. Pella Christian was led by 16 points from Levi Schelhaas and they end the season at 19-7.

Rock Valley 60, Monticello 44
Rock Valley led by 7 at half and used a 10 point advantage in the third to put the game away. Brys Van Grootheest led the Rockets once again with 17 points and 5 assists. Sam Remmerde added 14 and they improved to 21-5. Preston Ries led Monticello with 15 points and their season ends at 22-4.

Class 3A Semifinals

Dallas Center-Grimes 63, Winterset 46
-Dallas Center-Grimes used an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Mustangs were led by 19 points from Jackson Jones and 13 points and 8 rebounds from Cole Glasgow. DC-G is now 21-5 on the season. Winterset was led by 17 points from Levi Gurwell. Their terrific season comes to an end with a record of 20-6.

Central DeWitt 70, Assumption, Davenport 46
-Central DeWitt took control early with a 17-4 advantage in the first quarter. Shawn Gilbert scored 32 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and had 4 assists. Central DeWitt shot a sweltering 72% from the field and improved to 20-6. Assumption got 13 points from Noah Mack and ended their season at 20-6.

Class 4A Semifinals

Ames 62, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy 43
Trevion LeBeaux had 18 points and 7 rebounds as the Ames Little Cyclones earned their way to the title game. Tamin Lipsey added 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ames had 42 points in the paint and improved to 22-3. Kennedy was led by 13 points from Jackson Bowman and their season ends with a 21-4 mark.

Johnston 61, Prairie, Cedar Rapids 57 (OT)
The Dragons escaped another close game with a win to make the championship game. Johnston made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 23 seconds of overtime to get the win. Masen Ryan’s three with 1:20 left tied it to send the game to overtime and he led the Dragons with 18 points. Trey Lewis added 17 points and 5 assists. Johnston improves to 21-3. Prairie was led by 14 points from Gabe Burkle, their season halts at 18-7.

Creighton advances at Big East Tourney with win over Marquette

The Creighton Bluejays outscored the Marquette Golden Eagles by 8 in the second half and grabbed a 74-63 win in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals. The Jays outrebounded Marquette 40-27 and shot 49% for the game.

Atlantic native Ryan Hawkins led the scoring with 18 points and grabbed 6 boards. Ryan Kalkbrenner and Arthur Kaluma each scored 14. Creighton is now 21-10 on the season.

Creighton advances to the Big East Tourney Semifinals on Friday. They will face off against the top-seeded Providence Friars at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening, that game will be televised on FS1. Providence advanced with a 65-61 win over Butler on Thursday.

Historic offensive day sends Iowa past Northwestern

The Iowa Hawkeyes had a record setting day in their first game at the Big Ten Tournament, routing Northwestern 112-76. The Hawkeyes set a Big Ten Tournament record for points and three pointers made with 19 on the day. Iowa shot a blistering 65.5% from three and 61.4% from the field.

Keegan Murray dropped in 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Jordan Bohannon added 17 and Payton Sandfort had 13. Every one of the 14 players that hit the floor scored at least 2 points for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa improves to 23-9 and will move on to the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday against Rutgers. We’ll have the game on KJAN with pregame at 12:00 p.m. and tipoff at 1:00 p.m.
