DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police in Des Moines say they’ve arrested a suspect in the death of a man at a homeless camp on the city’s north side. Police said in a news release Friday that 21-year-old Donterius Jamar Bomar, of Des Moines, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of assaulting a business employee and stealing the employee’s car within hours of being released from jail on a separate attempted murder charge. Police believe Bomar was driving the stolen car when he hit 69-year-old Charles Michael Childs.

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (AP) — A former Sioux Center teacher already serving a federal prison sentence for having sexual contact with young boys has been sentenced to additional time in state prison on similar convictions. The Sioux County Attorney’s office says 37-year-old Curtis Van Dam was sentenced Friday to 60 years in state prison. The sentence will be served after his 15-year federal prison term. Van Dam was implicated in dozens of incidents involving boys under age 12 or 13.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iowa Republican congressman Steve King is under new criticism for remarks on white nationalism and white supremacy. They’re coming from South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott, who penned a Washington Post op-ed saying King’s remarks in The New York Times questioning how those terms became offensive damage the GOP and the nation. King on Friday said he is not a racist but rather an advocate of Western civilization and American values. House GOP leaders condemned King’s remarks to the Times.

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — An arrest has been made in the death of a woman whose body was found earlier this week on the side of an eastern Iowa highway. The Muscatine Journal reports that police arrested 35-year-old Douglas Foster, of Marion, Thursday night in the death of 20-year-old Lea Renae Ponce, of Fairfield. Investigators say Ponce was last seen alive early Tuesday getting into a pickup truck Foster was believed to have been driving.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have never beaten Indianapolis in four tries in the playoffs. They will try to end that era of heartache in the divisional round later today (Saturday). Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ record-setting offense may have to outscore Andrew Luck and the Colts, who hope to put up big numbers against a suspect Kansas City defense at Arrowhead Stadium.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Michael Wacha avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $6.35 million contract, a raise of $1.05 million. St. Louis also agreed to one-year deals with outfielder Marcell Ozuna at $12.25 million and right-hander Dominic Leone at $1.26 million.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The postponed Missouri-South Carolina men’s basketball game has been tentatively rescheduled for Sunday, as long as the Tigers can travel safely for the road game amid winter weather. The contest was called off Saturday because of Missouri’s travel issues. The schools worked with the Southeastern Conference office to rework the game date.

The Underwood Eagles picked up wins in girls and boys hoops on Friday over the Riverside Bulldogs at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. The two Western Iowa Conference teams met up for the first two games of the Jenny Ed Sports Med MAC Shootout, an event that will host 12 games over two days.

In the girls game Underwood jumped out to a 14-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and the offense was slow to come by for the Bulldogs. The Eagles lead only grew by a point to 13 at half but the Eagles blew the game open in the third. Underwood outscored Riverside 14-8 in that third quarter and pushed away for the win.

The Eagles were led by 13 points from Kendra Kuck and 11 from Erica Rowe. Macy Vanfossan and Erin McMains both finished with 10 for the Eagles as well. Underwood improves to 5-9 with the win. Next up for them is a road trip to Treynor on Tuesday.

Riverside falls to 2-11 on the year. Jadyn Achenbach led the Bulldogs with 7 points despite fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Riverside will travel to Audubon next Friday night.

In the boys game Underwood used a 22-0 run that spanned from midway through the second quarter until 2 minutes left in the third quarter to grab the win 64-35.  The game was tied at 17 before the Eagles closed the first half on a 9-0 run to head to the locker room with the lead. The scoring drought continued for the Bulldogs until sophomore Eli Ryun came off the bench to hit a three.

The Eagles were led by 15 points from Jalen Humphrey, and Timothy Conn finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Underwood climbs over .500 with the win to 7-6 on the season.

Riverside was led by three players with 6 points each: Drake Woods, Brogan Allensworth, and Eli Ryun. The Bulldogs fall to 3-10 on the season with the loss.

Staff Assault: Iowa State Penitentiary

News

January 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(FORT MADISON) – A correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary at approximately 11:52 a.m., Friday. Staff were alerted to a fire alarm triggered in a living unit at the prison. As they began evacuating inmates from the building to the yard, they discovered that one inmate had started a fire in his cell, and had used his mattress to barricade himself inside. As a team of staff attempted to remove the inmate from the cell in order to extinguish the fire he had started, the inmate attempted to assault the responding correctional officers with closed-fist strikes.

The staff used pepper spray to subdue the aggressive inmate, and then quickly extinguished the fire.  The staff that were involved with the aggressive inmate were evaluated and treated by institution medical staff for smoke inhalation and minor physical injuries, and were released to finish the remainder of their shifts. The inmate that is suspected to have started the fire has been taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to be treated for self-inflicted injury.

The institution was placed on restricted movement while the smoke was cleared from the living unit, but has since returned to normal operation.  The incident remains under investigation.

King says he made ‘rookie mistake’ in talking with New York Times

News

January 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Republican Congressman Steve King took to the floor of the U.S. House today (Friday) to respond to a New York Times story in which he’s quoted talking about the terms white nationalist, white supremacy and western civilization. King, a Republican from the western Iowa community of Kiron, says he is an “AMERICAN Nationalist” and rejects the ideology of white supremacy and white nationalism.

King says he “made a freshman mistake” in talking to the New York Times.

The newpaper quoted King asking rhetorically why the terms white nationalism, white supremacy and western civilization had developed negative connotations. King today (Friday) said on the House floor that he is an advocate for the values of western civilization.

King says he is an advocate for the values of western civilization. The top three Republican in the U.S. House have denounced King in the past 24 hours. Republican Tim Scott, an African American who represents South Carolina in the U.S Senate, says “silence is no longer acceptable” when it comes to the things King says. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is urging Republicans to “actively support” King’s primary opponent, Republican State Senator Randy Feenstra. Iowa G-O-P chairman Jeff Kaufmann has called Feenstra a “legitimate” challenger, but Kaufmann says the party will be neutral in the race.

Kaufmann says he wants to make it clear there are some phrases that do not represent “the American spirit” and Kaufmann puts “white supremacy” in that category.

Iowa DEMOCRATIC Party chairman Troy Price says King is an embarrassment to the state of Iowa.

Feenstra, the state senator who’s stepped forward to challenge King, is using the hashtag “retire Steve King” on twitter and this (Friday) afternoon Feenstra tweeted a link to a National Review opinion piece. It was titled “Steve King’s Bigotry Is the Antithesis of American Ideals.”
