Creighton advances at Big East Tourney with win over Marquette

The Creighton Bluejays outscored the Marquette Golden Eagles by 8 in the second half and grabbed a 74-63 win in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals. The Jays outrebounded Marquette 40-27 and shot 49% for the game.

Atlantic native Ryan Hawkins led the scoring with 18 points and grabbed 6 boards. Ryan Kalkbrenner and Arthur Kaluma each scored 14. Creighton is now 21-10 on the season.

Creighton advances to the Big East Tourney Semifinals on Friday. They will face off against the top-seeded Providence Friars at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening, that game will be televised on FS1. Providence advanced with a 65-61 win over Butler on Thursday.

Historic offensive day sends Iowa past Northwestern

The Iowa Hawkeyes had a record setting day in their first game at the Big Ten Tournament, routing Northwestern 112-76. The Hawkeyes set a Big Ten Tournament record for points and three pointers made with 19 on the day. Iowa shot a blistering 65.5% from three and 61.4% from the field.

Keegan Murray dropped in 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Jordan Bohannon added 17 and Payton Sandfort had 13. Every one of the 14 players that hit the floor scored at least 2 points for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa improves to 23-9 and will move on to the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday against Rutgers. We’ll have the game on KJAN with pregame at 12:00 p.m. and tipoff at 1:00 p.m.

 

Iowa State plays Texas Tech tonight (Thursday night) in Big 12 Tournament

Iowa State opens the Big 12 Tournament with the late game tonight against 14th ranked Texas Tech. The Cyclones are the sixth seed and split two regular season games against the Red Raiders.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. Both teams feature defensive, grind it out style of play.

Like ISU, Texas Tech is comfortable playing low scoring games.

Otzelberger would not be surprised if points are at a premium Thursday night

No. 24 Iowa opens B1G Tournament this (Thursday) afternoon

The 24th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes open the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis this (Thursday) afternoon. The Hawkeyes are the fifth seed and open against the winner of tonight’s game between Northwestern and Nebraska. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery.

McCaffery feels the tournament is wide open.

Iowa is 22-9 and has played its best basketball in the last month.

That’s sophomore forward Keegan Murray who says defense was a big part of the turnaround.

Class 4A Quarterfinals

Cedar Rapids, Kennedy 61, Waukee Northwest 55
Cedar Rapids Kennedy shot 56% for the game and edged out a win over Waukee Northwest. The Cougars were led by 26 points from Kenzie Reed and 22 from Colby Dolphin. Kennedy shot an impressive 18-21 at the free throw line to help their cause. The Cougars improved to 21-3. Northwest had four players in double-figures led by 15 from Grant Tigges. The Wolves finish their first season of competition at 20-5.

Ames 60, Burlington 40
Iowa State signee Tamin Lipsey scored 16 points and dished out 9 assists to lead the Little Cyclones to the win over Burlington. Ames shot 60% from the field and took control with an 18-8 edge in the second quarter and 24-10 advantage in the third. The Little Cyclones improved to 21-3. Burlington got 12 points from Jackson Carlson and end the season at 17-8.

Prairie, Cedar Rapids 62, Cedar Falls 52
The 7-seed Prairie made enough plays in the fourth to take down Cedar Falls. The Hawks knocked down 21-38 shots to keep their first state tourney trip in 24 years going. Jake Walter led the way with 16 points and 7 rebounds and Dionte Fliss added 13 points. The Hawks improved to 19-6. Cedar Fall was led by 32 points from Trey Campbell but their season ends at 20-4.

Johnston 55, Ankeny 53
South Dakota signee Steven Kramer led the Dragons with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Lewis was close behind with 18 points, and Samuel Tornabane had seven blocks. The Dragons improve to 20-3. Ankeny was led by 10 points from Carson Johnson and their season ends at 19-5.

Class 1A Semifinals

Grand View Christian 71, Lake Mills 66 (2OT)
Josh Baucom had 27 points and Manny Hammonds had 19 to lead the Thunder. The Thunder survive their second straight overtime game and remain unbeaten at 26-0. Wyatt Helming led Lake Mills with 36 points and 11 rebounds, their season ends at 25-1.

North Linn, Troy Mills 56, St. Mary’s, Remsen 46
North Linn took only 32 shots, making half of them, but a 20 of 28 effort at the free throw line carried them to the win. Three players scored in double-figures for North Linn, led by 18 from Austin Hilmer. The Lynx improved to 26-1. St. Mary’s was led by 12 points each from Carter Schorg, Austin Jensen, and Jaxon Bunkers. They end the season at 25-1.

MVC annnounces 2021-2022 women’s basketball All-Conference Teams

LOUIS — Six repeat first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selections from a year ago, including Drake’s Grace Berg, Illinois State’s Juliunn Redmond, Missouri State’s Brice Calip, UNI’s Karli Rucker, SIU’s Makenzie Silvey and Valparaiso’s Shay Frederick, headline a list of 11 players named to the all-conference first team unit, the league office announced Wednesday.

Joining the six repeat selections on the first team is Evansville’s Abby Feit, a 2021 honorable mention choice. Drake’s Megan Meyer, Illinois State’s DeAnna Wilson, Missouri State’s Abigayle Jackson and SIU’s Abby Brockmeyer, all first-time honorees, round out the first team selections.

The honorable mention team includes Drake’s Maggie Bair, Evansville’s Je’Naiya Davis, Indiana State’s Del’Janae Williams, Loyola’s Allison Day, UNI’s Grace Boffeli and SIU’s Gabby Walker.

Players from four different schools land spots on the MVC All-Defensive Team. Indiana State’s Del’Janae Williams, Missouri State’s Brice Calip and Abigayle Jackson, SIU’s Abby Brockmeyer and Valparaiso’s Grace White all join the all-defensive unit.

Three schools are represented on the MVC All-Freshman Team. Bradley’s Abbie Draper and Caroline Waite, Drake’s Anna Miller and Katie Dinnebier and Indiana State’s Arianna Smith appear on the five-player rookie team.

Four schools are represented on the MVC All-Newcomer Team. Drake’s Megan Meyer, Evansville’s Myia Clark and Je’Naiya Davis, Missouri State’s Mariah White and Valparaiso’s Olivia Brown appear on the five-player newcomer team.

Missouri Valley Conference specialty awards for Player, Newcomer, Freshman, Defensive Player, Most Improved Player and Sixth Player of the Year will be announced, in addition to the league’s Coach of the Year, at an awards ceremony in between Games 1 and 2 of the MVC Tournament on Thursday, March 10, at TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill.

Northern Iowa prepares for the NIT

The Panthers returned to the practice floor Tuesday, as they get set for next week’s start of the NIT. UNI lost to Loyola in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Tournament but gets an automatic spot in the field after winning the regular season title. UNI coach Ben Jacobson…

The pairings will be announced Sunday night and Jacobson expects the Panthers to open on the road.

Jacobson says the Panthers will have a normal week of practice to get ready.

Dallas Center-Grimes beats Carroll in 3A at boy’s state basketball

Top seeded Dallas Center-Grimes outscored Carroll 17-6 in the third quarter and raced away to a 65-45 win in a 3A quarterfinal. Senior forward Jackson Jones led the Mustangs with 18 points.

Carroll ends the season with a record of 16-9.

Winterset earns emotional victory at boy’s state basketball

Winterset outscored Marion 12-8 in overtime to claim a thrilling 81-77 victory in a class 3A quarterfinal. The victory came three days after a tornado claimed the lives of six people in Madison county. Winterset coach Josh Henry.

Henry was pleased with way his team responded after a couple of emotional days.

Junior guard Brayden Dinkla led the Huskies with 26 points.

Dinkla says the Huskies did their best to focus on the game in the wake of the devastation.

Brayson Laube led Marion with 35 points. The Wolves close the season with a record of 19-6.
