The Atlantic archery team completed a very successful weekend at the NASP Western Nationals in Sandy, Utah. The Trojans high school squad took 2nd place in both the 3D and Bullseye competitions.
In the 3D challenge the Trojans scored 1678, finishing only behind Sarcoxie High School of Missouri that shot a 1720. Halle Copeland finished 2nd in the high school girls with a 289. Cooper Jipsen was 8th for the high school boys with a 286. Find the full team scoring breakdown HERE.
The Atlantic middle school team finished 8th with a total of 1587. Grant Petty was 10th in the middle school boys with a 278. Katrina Williams was 9th in the middle school girls with a 274. Find the full team scoring breakdown HERE.
Atlantic scored 3,338 in the Bullseye competition, again only finishing behind Sarcoxie who shot a 3,414. Cooper Jipsen finished as the 6th best in the high school boys division with a 290. (HawkeyeSports) University of Iowa defensive back Dane Belton was selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round of Saturday’s NFL Draft. Belton was the 114th player picked overall. He is the 17th defensive back selected in the Kirk Ferentz era.
Belton (6-foot-1, 205-pounds) is a native of Tampa, Florida. He started all 14 games in 2021, playing both outside linebacker and strong safety. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from both league coaches and media.
Belton recorded 46 tackles, including three tackles for loss. He led the Hawkeyes with five interceptions as the defense set a school record with 25 thefts in 14 games. He also led the team with seven pass break-ups and earned the Coaches Appreciation Award for defense. Belton had a career-best two interceptions in Iowa’s win at Northwestern.
Belton was the second Hawkeye taken in the draft after Tyler Linderbaum went in the first round to the Baltimore Ravens.
Other Hawkeyes that signed undrafted free agent deals after the draft were: Tyler Goodson RB (Green Bay), Matt Hankins DB (Atlanta), Jack Koerner DB (New Orleans), Caleb Shudak K (Tennessee), Zach VanValkenburg DL (Las Vegas).
AMES, Iowa – Five more Iowa State football players will have a chance to showcase their skills and compete for NFL roster spots when mini camps begin after signing deals following the draft.
The following Cyclones will enter NFL rookie camps after agreeing to NFL free agent contracts: Chase Allen (Chicago Bears), Jake Hummel (Los Angeles Rams), Andrew Mevis (Jacksonville Jaguars), Mike Rose (Kansas City Chiefs), Derek Schweiger (New Orleans Saints).
Allen was a reliable six-year member of the Cyclone football program, earning four Second Team All-Big 12 honors (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021) in his career. Allen was a key player in the rise of Iowa State in the college football landscape, becoming one of just three players in school history to play in five bowl games.
The Nixa, Missouri, native finished his career playing in 59 games and making 34 starts. Allen had 74 receptions, 810 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Both of his reception and receiving yard totals rank sixth all-time among ISU tight ends.
Hummel was an iron man of sorts, playing in more games than any other Cyclone in school history. He saw action in 63 games and made 25 career starts.
The Des Moines, Iowa, native led Iowa State with 80 tackles in 2021, recording 5.5 tackles for a loss, four pass breakups and tying for the team lead with two interceptions. In his career, Hummel was a two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 pick by the league’s coaches.
Mevis, who played his first three seasons at Fordham before transferring to Iowa State last season, was a Phil Steele Third Team All-American and a Lou Groza Award semifinalist after a sensational season that saw him connect on 20-of-23 field goals, including 10-of-13 from 40 yards or longer, and 32-of-32 extra point attempts.
The Warsaw, Indiana, native tied the school record for field goals made in a season and his field goal percentage (87.0) is the second-best clip in school history. Mevis also tied the school record for consecutive field goals made (15) and broke the school mark for 40+ yard field goals made (10).
Rose heads to the Chiefs after a standout career for the Cyclones. He became the second Cyclone to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2020 and being named a two-time All-American in 2020 and 2021.
The 2021 Rotary Lombardi Award Finalist was a First Team All-Big 12 selection twice (2020, 2021) after recording 321 career tackles, including 41.0 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks. His 41.0 career TFL ranks second in school history.
Schweiger, an offensive lineman from Plymouth, Wisconsin, came to Iowa State as a walk-on and started the final 25 games of his career as he helped lead the team to the fifth-best total offensive average (424.5) in school history. He was a Second Team All-Big 12 pick in 2020.
This group of Cyclones helped the team to the 2020 Big 12 Championship game and five consecutive bowl games. ISU went 39-25 the last five seasons.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State defensive lineman Eyioma “Enyi” Uwazurike has been selected by the Denver Broncos with the No. 116 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Uwazurike was one of the top defensive linemen in the Big 12 Conference in 2021, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches. The Detroit, Michigan, native started all 13 games while playing on the interior and on the edge.
He finished the 2021 season with 42 tackles and was second on the team with 12.0 tackles for a loss and 9.0 sacks, ranking fourth in the Big 12 and 30th nationally in sacks. Uwazurike had at least 0.5 TFL in 10 of 13 games last season.
He matched a career high with six tackles against Clemson in the Cheez-It Bowl.
“Enyi has grown so much in his time at Iowa State and we are so proud of him and thrilled for him and his family to have this moment,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said. “He was incredibly flexible on the football field and had great success regardless of where we lined him up. His willingness to learn and adapt have really allowed him to impact Iowa State in a tremendous way.”
Uwazurike, who spent six seasons at Iowa State including a redshirt season in 2016, made 46 starts and played in 60 games in his career, the second-most games played in school history. He finished with 144 tackles, 34.5 TFL, 15.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries, 15 quarterback hurries and two blocked field goals.
He ranks third in school history for career tackles for a loss and sixth in sacks.
In addition to being named First Team All-Big 12 in 2021, he was an honorable mention selection in 2019 and 2020.
Uwazurike, the first Cyclone defensive lineman drafted since Ahtyba Rubin in 2008, is the second Cyclone picked in the 2022 NFL Draft, joining Breece Hall (New York Jets, 2nd Round, Pick 36).
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tight end Charlie Kolar, the most decorated player at his position in school history, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round with the 128th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Kolar’s standout Cyclone career included being a three-time First Team All-Big 12 selection, a three-time All-American and two-time Mackey Award Finalist on the field. Off the field, Kolar was CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Player of the Year and recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy in 2021.
The Norman, Oklahoma, native owns virtually all tight end records and ranks in ISU’s career top 10 in the following categories: receptions (168, 4th), receiving yards (2,181, 4th) and touchdowns (23, 3rd).
“Charlie is one of the best competitors I have ever been around,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said. “He takes great pride in everything that he does and that has set him up to be successful both on the field and off. Charlie has been an incredible representative of Iowa State the last five years and we are thrilled for him and the Kolar family.”
In 2021, Kolar started 11 of 12 games and led all Big 12 tight ends in receptions (62), receiving yards (756) and touchdown receptions (6), breaking his own season school records by tight ends in catches and receiving yards.
He ranked fifth nationally in catches per game (5.2) and fourth in the nation in receiving yards per game (63.0) among tight ends.
When the Cyclones needed someone to make a play through the air, it was often Kolar that they turned to. He had 18 third-down conversions and three more on fourth down.
Kolar’s best game came at Oklahoma, breaking ISU single-game records for tight ends in catches (12) and receiving yards (152), including eight receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter alone. His 12 receptions tied for the fifth-most by a Cyclone in school history.
Kolar, the first Cyclone tight end drafted since Mike Banks in 2002, is the third Cyclone picked in the 2022 NFL Draft, joining Breece Hall (New York Jets, 2nd Round, Pick 36) and Enyi Uwazurike (Denver Broncos, 4th Round, Pick 116).
DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field claimed two relay titles en route to the men’s first Drake Relays Cup since 2018 and Junior James Carter, Jr. completed his sweep of the horizontal jumps by claiming the triple jump title on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
“Anytime there is a trophy, we want to battle and compete to win it,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “This is more of a team effort – getting a chance to compete in some relays we don’t get to compete in during the season. That’s always a big thing as we get into our championship season.”
The men’s shuttle-hurdle relay team of sophomore Grant Conway, senior Josh Braverman, freshman Kalil Johnson and sophomore Gratt Reed got the first win for the day, clocking a school record (56.74) in the process. It was the first shuttle-hurdle championship at Drake for the Hawkeyes since 1984 and the fourth in program history.
The next win came in the men’s sprint-medley relay. The team of sophomores Austin Kresley and Khullen Jefferson and juniors Julien Gillum and Alec Still clocked the fifth-fastest time in program history (3:18.06). Still anchored the 800-meter leg in 1:49.6.
“Growing up, this is the meet you dream of running at – especially for the Hawkeyes,” Still said. “I’ve been dreaming of running for the Hawks since I was in fifth grade. To cross the finish line in my last race ever at Drake (as a champion) is a great feeling, and to share it with these guys too.”
After winning the long jump on Friday, Carter, Jr. doubled back to sweep the horizontal jumps with a win in the triple jump (15.79m / 51’9.75”) today for the third overall Drake Relays title of his career. He became the first men’s university division athlete to win both events in 16 years at the Drake Relays.
“When there’s pressure on the line, I tend to pick up my energy a little bit more,” Carter said. “I didn’t really want to have to take all my jumps, but I wanted another (Drake Relays) flag. I take a lot of pride in being a combo-horizontal jumper because it’s hard to do both, and it’s hard to do well at both. I’m proud that I’m able to keep improving in both events.”
The Hawkeye women had a trio of runner-up finishes in the sprint-medley relay, 4×100-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay. The medley of sophomore LaSarah Hargrove, seniors Erin Dowd and Payton Wensel and sophomore Clare Pitcher clocked the third-fastest time in program history (3:52.56). Hargrove led off the 4×100-meter relay (45.46) as well, followed by sophomore Tesa Roberts, Dowd and sophomore Paige Magee. The 4×400-meter relay consisted of junior Mariel Bruxvoort, Dowd, Wensel and Roberts (3:37.12).
The Hawkeyes also ran a pair of impressive distance-medley relays. The men’s squad of sophomore Kal Lewis and freshmen Everett Steward, Antonio Abrego and Max Murphy finished third (9:47.73) and posted the fifth-fastest time ever at Iowa. The women’s quartet of freshman Grace Bookin-Nosbisch, Roberts, freshman Alli Bookin-Nosbisch and sophomore Amber Aesoph ran the seventh-fastest time in school history (11:40.18), finishing ninth.
After winning the shuttle-hurdle relay, Reed (14.14), Conway (14.20) and Braverman (14.28) finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles final, respectively. In the 100-meter hurdles, Magee (14.71) finished sixth.
Sophomore Jordan Johnson turned in a third-place finish in the men’s discus (53.66m / 176’0”). The 4×100-meter relay of Johnson, Kresley, Reed and Jefferson were runners-up (40.50), and the 4×400-meter relay team of Steward, sophomores Austin West and Armando Bryson and Gillum also finished runner-up (3:08.02).
The Hawkeyes head to the Wisconsin Twilight next Friday in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Cardinals managed only two hist in the game and committed 2 errors along the way. St. Louis falls to 11-9 on the season.
