Drake players help Des Moines Menace to unbeaten start

Sports

June 17th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Two players with Drake ties are part of a Des Moines Menace soccer club that is off to an unbeaten start to the season. Leroy Enzugusi was a three-time all Missouri Valley selection for the Bulldogs and has scored two goals for a Menace team that is riding a 13 game unbeaten streak dating back to last season.

Enzugusi says coming off the U-S League 2 championship last season there is a standard to be upheld.

Goalkeeper Quinn Millerd is coming off his redshirt freshman season at Drake and says the Menace have lofty goals for this season.

Millerd says the individual goals for all of the players is to earn a professional contract.

The Menace take take a 5-0-1 record on the road to play the St. Croix soccer club on Saturday.

NASCAR trucks return to Knoxville Raceway

Sports

June 17th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The NASCAR trucks return to the Knoxville Raceway for the second straight year on Saturday night with the running of the Clean Harbors 150. Knoxville race director John McCoy says the national exposure is a plus with the race of Fox Sports One.

Last year’s race was on dry and slick conditions. McCoy hopes the track will be a little more tacky for this one.

McCoy says the NASCAR trucks draw a different crowd from the ones that watch sprint cars.

Brecht earns Perfect Game Freshman All-America Honors

Sports

June 16th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa pitcher Brody Brecht has been named a Perfect Game second-team Freshman All-American, it was announced Wednesday by Perfect Game. Only first-year players were eligible to be honored.

It is the second All-America distinction for the right-hander, as he was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball earlier this month. Brecht also was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2022.

The Ankeny, Iowa, native, posted a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances as a true freshman. He allowed just 13 hits and 16 runs (eight earned) over 22 2/3 innings where he had 44 strikeouts. Brecht surrendered just one extra base hit in his 17 appearances and limited hitters to a .155 average.

During the final two months, Brecht allowed just one earned run over 10 relief appearances. He surrendered just four hits and struck out 28 over 13 1/3 innings from April 6-May 15.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2022 season with a 36-19 overall record with the 36 wins ranking eighth in program history. Iowa finished in a tie for second in the Big Ten regular season standings, advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and the team became the first team to win two games on the same day at the Big Ten Tournament.
