(Update) Bluffs shooting victim identified

Police officials in Council Bluffs late Tuesday night, identified a man who was the victim of a homicide. Authorities say the body 39-year old Larry J. Scott, of Council Bluffs,was found at around 4:20-a.m. Tuesday, after Council Bluffs officers responded to a report of a man lying in the middle of Avenue B, just west of North 10th Street. A preliminary investigation determined Scott had been the victim of a shooting. An autopsy was tentatively scheduled to take place today (Wednesday).

Anyone with any information related to the incident is being asked to call the Council Bluffs Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 712-328-4728 or they can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 712-328-STOP (7867).

Davenport Man Sentenced For Stolen Valor Act Conviction

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 70-year-old Davenport man has been sentenced to five years’ probation and fined $5,000 for buying or trying to buy congressional military decorations and medals without proper authorization.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa says Robert Ellsworth Brooks was sentenced Tuesday after earlier pleading guilty under the Stolen Valor Act.

Brooks served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army in the 1960s and at times in the Army Reserves and Navy in the 1970s and 1980s. Prosecutors say Brooks earned a number of medals by 1970, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star Medal. But prosecutors say he claimed various other medals throughout the years, including Purple Hearts and Silver Stars, which he knew he had not earned and had bought.

 

Harlan Police report, 8/30/16

Police in Harlan today (Tuesday) released a weekly report on arrests. Authorities say on Sunday, 24-year old Kolten Kobold, of Harlan, and 21-year old Jaykob Lewis, of Avoca, were arrested when officers were called to a fight in the 1000 block of 7th Street. Lewis was charged with disorderly conduct and Kobold was charged with intoxication in public and disorderly conduct.

Also arrested on Sunday, was 31-year old Joseph Smith-Kidd, of Woodbine, who was taken into custody when officers were called to a report of a suicidal subject.  Smith-Kidd was taken to Myrtue Medical Center and when cleared, was taken to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with violation of a no contact order.

Last Saturday, 31-year old Ryan Carter, of Irwin, was arrested in Harlan, following a traffic stop.  Carter was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).

And, on Aug. 25th, 47-year old Richard Draper, of Council Bluffs, was taken into custody following a traffic stop.  Draper was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with OWI.  Draper was also cited for failure to wear a seatbelt and operating a non-registered vehicle.

Light agenda for Cass County BOS, Wednesday

The Cass County Board of Supervisors have a rather light agenda for their Wednesday morning session at the courthouse, in Atlantic. Among the action items, is approval of the Fiscal Year 2015-16 Urban Renewal Report, and the acceptance or rejection of bids for two Cass County Bridge Projects: One on Yankton Road, over Williams Creek; The other on 740th Street, over the West Nodaway River.

The Board of Supervisor’s meeting gets underway at 8:30-a.m., Wednesday.

Homicide investigation in Council Bluffs

Police in Council Bluffs are investigating a homicide that took place overnight. Authorities say at around 4:20-a.m. (Tuesday), Council Bluffs officers responded to a report of a man lying in the middle of Avenue B, just west of North 10th Street.  Upon their arrival, officers found a deceased adult male.  A preliminary investigation indicates the man was the victim of a shooting.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were still in the process of collecting evidence and canvassing the neighborhood Tuesday, for witnesses.  The identity of the victim will not be released until his family is properly notified.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office is reporting two people were arrested on separate charges, Friday. 26-year old Ashley Nicole Defevere , of Omaha, was arrested during a stop on Highway 34, for Unlawful Possession of Prescription drugs, and Driving Under Suspension. Her bond was set at $1,600.  And, 33-year old Curtis Richard Frazee, of Hastings, was arrested for OWI 1st offense, Fail to Obey a Stop Sign, Depositing or Throwing Litter on Highway, and Failure to Yield Right of way. His bond was set at $1,000.

Omaha man arrested during stolen vehicle investigation

Sheriff’s Deputies in Pottawattamie County arrested a Nebraska man Monday afternoon, during an investigation in Crescent, into a stolen pickup truck. Authorities say 28-year old Charles Wiley Craven, of Omaha, was arrested in the 1000 block of Old Lincoln Highway, on Pottawattamie County warrants for Reckless Driving and Felony Eluding, and a warrant out of Douglas County, NE warrant for being a Fugitive From Justice.

Craven was one of at least two individuals taken into custody for possessing a stolen 1996 Chevy Silverado pickup. Another suspect was 19-year old Jonathan Russell Holmes, of Omaha, who was wanted for two counts of Criminal Trespass, and

3 arrested on drug charges in Creston

Three people were arrested on drug charges early Monday morning, in Creston. The Creston Police Department says 27-year old Kurtis Lee Fooken, 23-year old Noble John Murren, and 25-year old Dakota Shane Gaulden, all of Creston, were taken into custody at 411 N. Poplar Street, in Creston, between 5:35- and 6-a.m., Monday.

Fooken and Gaulden were charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana – 1st offense. Murren was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance/Methamphetamine -1st offense.  All three men were booked into the Union County Jail and later released on $1,000 bond, each.

The Creston P-D says also, a woman in the 600 block of S. Park Street reported Monday night, that several knives and a flashlight were stolen from a garage on her property. The incident happened sometime between 11-p.m. Sunday and 8-a.m. Monday. The loss was estimated at $535. And, a man in the same neighborhood reported his garage was also broken into during the same time frame. Nothing was reported missing, though. Damage from the incident amounted to about $100.
