Midwest Sports Headlines: 11/2/2019

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is questionable against the Minnesota Vikings, raising the possibility the league MVP could return after missing just one game to a dislocated kneecap. Mahomes practiced on a limited basis throughout the week, just as he did last week. But rather than being listed out, as he was for the Green Bay Packers, he was given the official injury designation that means it is uncertain whether Mahomes will play.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Fred Hoiberg knows the track record of Nebraska basketball coaches is not good. He wanted the job anyway. Hoiberg takes over a program that has not won a conference championship in 70 years or ever won a game in the NCAA Tournament. He says a sold-out arena and top-notch facilities can trump the program’s lack of tradition. He says his sales pitch to recruits is that they can come to Lincoln and do things that have never been done before at Nebraska.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — No. 22 Kansas State and rival Kansas are both coming off wins heading into their annual Sunflower State Showdown. The Wildcats are still flying high off their upset of then-No. 5 Oklahoma last week. The Jayhawks are coming off a game-ending field goal that beat Texas Tech. The Wildcats and Jayhawks meet Saturday in Lawrence.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — David Perron scored eight seconds into overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 comeback victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. After the Blues overcame a two-goal deficit to force overtime, Perron scored off a pass from Alex Pietrangelo at the moment St. Louis’ power play from Sonny Milano’s hooking penalty expired.

The Audubon Wheelers advanced to the Quarterfinal round of the 8-Man Football Playoffs with a 48-20 win over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves on Friday night at Chis Jones Field. The Wheelers turned the game at the end of the first quarter into the start of the second.

With the Wheelers up 14-6, the Wolves had touchdown pass called back near the end of the first quarter on a holding call. That would force the Wolves to punt the ball back to the Wheelers. Audubon then ran a double reverse flea-flicker on the first play of the second quarter to grab a 2-score lead.

Kaiden Smith had a monster night for Audubon. He finished with 3 rushing touchdowns, 1 receiving touchdown, and 1 passing touchdown. He finished with 105 yards rushing, 75 yards receiving, and the one touchdown pass for 21 yards.

Skyler Schultes was also a force for the Wheelers with 136 yards passing and 1 touchdown to go along with 58 yards rushing.

The Wheelers improve to 10-1 on the season and will get a rematch with the CAM Cougars next Friday in the Quarterfinals. The Wheelers won that regular season finale over CAM 19-16.

Harris-Lake Park ends their season with an 8-2 record.

We’ll have coverage of the Audubon vs. CAM game next week on KJAN. Pregame will start at 6:00pm, with kickoff at 7:00pm next Friday night at Chis Jones Field.

DNR: Manure spill leads to fish kill in east-central Iowa

Ag/Outdoor, News

November 1st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

VINING, Iowa (AP) — Iowa environmental officials are investigating a manure spill that led to a fish kill in east-central Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Friday that the fish kill was found on Wolf Creek about 2 miles northwest of Vining.

Department staff say a manure applicator for Mayo Farm Inc. reported Thursday morning that a drag hose leaked about 2,600 gallons of manure during land application. The applicator built a berm to dam up the spilled manure, but estimates that up to 500 gallons reached the creek.

Staff saw live fish at the site Thursday, but found some dead fish just downstream were found Friday morning. The department will monitor cleanup activities and consider appropriate enforcement action.

3 injured in Red Oak crash

News

November 1st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Both drivers and a passenger in one vehicle were injured during a collision Friday afternoon, in Red Oak. According to Red Oak Police, just before 2-p.m., officers were called to the intersection of Highway 34 and N. 8th Street, for a two car accident with possible injuries. Upon arrival, Officers found a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country van was facing southbound.

An investigation determined the driver of the van, 84-year old Joan Konopasek, of Red Oak, failed to obey the stop sign, and went southbound from the intersection when it was not clear. A 2005 Ford Freestyle van driven by 59-year old Wilma Keesis, of Red Oak, was eastbound and struck the other van. Both vehicles then came to rest in the southeast ditch.

Konopasek was manually extricated from her van by Red Oak Fire & Rescue. She was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The woman was transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Keesis, and her front seat passenger, 29-year old Chad Perkins, of Shenandoah, suffered minor injuries, and were also transported to the hospital by Red Oak Rescue.

A third passenger in her van was not hurt. Both vehicles were a total loss, with the damage estimated at $11,500 altogether. No citations had been issued as of the latest report. Red Oak Police were assisted at the scene by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Iowa State Patrol, and Red Oak Fire & Rescue.
