IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman he met at an Iowa City bar. Johnson County District Court records say 35-year-old Andrew Wilson pleaded guilty Friday to kidnapping, sexual abuse and other crimes. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 24. Wilson offered to drive the woman home Sept. 29, 2018, when the bar closed. A criminal complaint says he instead drove them to a secluded spot south of Iowa City and sexually assaulted her. The Gazette reported that the woman regained consciousness in a cornfield. She ran to a house, where a resident called 911 for her.

Iowa Concern Hotline braces for busy time as Iowans stress about $, weather

Ag/Outdoor, News

January 16th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — As the holiday bills are coming in and stress levels begin to rise, January and February are typically the busiest months of the year for counselors at the Iowa Concern Hotline. Tammy Jacobs, the hotlines coordinator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, says the free service is available to all Iowans, every day and at any time of day or night. “We offer stress counseling. We have counselors who are trained to talk to people about what’s going on, help walk them though the steps and develop skills in order to work through those,” Jacobs says. “We have legal staff available to help out with any legal questions that they might have. We also work with Extension and Outreach finance specialists, if people are having a financial issue going on.”

While the counselors work to address any issue callers may bring up, at this time of year, Jacobs says money matters are often front and center. “With the holidays being over, people are starting to get together with their tax consultants, going over some of their bills,” Jacobs says. “People are starting to meet with their bankers and farm financial providers in order to get operating loans for the next season.” With last year’s heavy rains and widespread flooding, many calls to the hotline focused on worries about spring planting and the fall harvest. With 2020 being an election year, Jacobs couldn’t predict how the call volume may fluctuate.

“Generally, we see between 400 and 600 calls a month just on the Iowa Concern Hotline,” Jacobs says. “Sometimes, we may see 700 or 800 calls a month. It just depends on what’s happening in the world, and if it’s flooding and there are disasters, then those calls may be a little bit higher.” To reach the Iowa Concern Hotline, call 800-447-1985, or some people might be more comfortable using a computer. “We’ve got the live chat. We also have Email an Expert, so if people just want to email a question in, then we can respond back to them,” Jacobs says. “We’re looking at probably within the next month, adding a text option to the Iowa Concern Hotline as well.”

The service was launched in 1985 during the Farm Crisis and was then known as the Rural Concern Hotline. The name was changed in 1993 to the Iowa Concern Hotline to reflect a broader reach and availability to anyone, farmers and non-farmers, rural and urban Iowans.

A third person at the home had a gunshot wound to a leg and was taken to a hospital. Police found evidence that indicated another person may have left the house. About a half hour later officers found someone nearby with a gunshot wound to a leg. That person also was taken to a hospital. Police didn’t immediately release the names of those involved.

New Iowa caucus rules could spark clashing claims of victory

News

January 16th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – New rules in this year’s Iowa caucuses could give presidential candidates an unprecedented opportunity to spin the results. In previous years, the Iowa Democratic Party reported just one number: the number of state delegates won by each candidate. For the first time, the party will this year report two other numbers — who had the most votes at the beginning and at the end of the night. Party officials say the new process will enhance transparency. But there is a growing sense it could also breed confusion by giving several candidates the chance to say they won the caucuses.

Legislators ponder rumble strips, left-lane hogs and back-seat belts

News

January 16th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Three traffic-related bills have already emerged in the 2020 Iowa legislature. A bill to make seat belt use mandatory for back-seat passengers has cleared a subcommittee in the Iowa Senate. Senator Zach Whiting of Spirit Lake says federal statistics show nearly half of the people killed in motor vehicle crashes last year were not wearing a seat belt. “That’s a lot of unnecessary death,” Whiting says, “and whether you want to call it liberty or you want to call it laziness, just buckle your seatbelt and be safe out there.”

Representative Megan Jones of Sioux Rapids has introduced similar legislation in the HOUSE that would require back-seat passengers to buckle up. “I think this is a helpful reminder because sometimes you’re just kind of squished in the back, you can’t quite reach it or something and you say: ‘Oh, well it’s not law so I don’t need to wear it,'” Jones says. “Well, let’s find that seat belt. Let’s dig it out. Let’s click it and move on.”

A constituent who works on medical flights told Jones he is concerned about the injuries he’s seeing in traffic accidents. “If we have those people secured and tucked into their belts, then we have a less likelihood they’re going to fly into someone else who may be properly belted in, but still faces injuries because of that flying person in the back seat,” Jones says.

Another transportation-related bill would let authorities ticket drivers who drive too slowly in the left-hand passing lane. A third bill would direct the D-O-T to put “rumble strips” on all paved county roads that intersect with state and federal highways. The requirement would apply to county blacktops where the speed limit is 55.

Representative Dean Fisher of Montour, the bill’s lead sponsor, says the bill was inspired, in part, by a December 1st accident in Benton County that killed a 26-year-old Des Moines woman. “Missed a stop sign on Highway 30. She hit a semi. A very tragic loss. There weren’t any rumble strips at the intersection,” Fisher says. “Perhaps rumble strips would have saved her and so many others.”

Two other lawmakers are co-sponsoring the bill after fatal wrecks in their districts involving vehicles on a county blacktop that did not stop and were hit while crossing onto a highway.  “Having that rumble strip, which is a completely different sensory perception than the visual of a stop sign I think would help tremendously,” Fisher says.

Rumble strips are indentations carved into a roadway and vehicles rumble when passed over the area. Fisher says he doesn’t like mandates, but rumble strips on paved county roads alert distracted or drowsy drivers a stop sign is ahead.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

WACO, Texas (AP) — Second-ranked Baylor has won its 13th game in a row. The 14-1 Bears beat Iowa State 68-55 and are the only Big 12 team to make it through the first four conference games without a loss. Davion Mitchell had 17 points for Baylor. He hit three free throws in the final second of the first half, then made two 3-pointers early in the second half as the Bears started stretching the lead. Prentiss Nixon and Rasir Bolton both had nine points for Iowa State, which is 8-8 overall.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — AJ Green scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half and Northern Iowa rallied to beat Valparaiso 88-78. The Panthers had 10 turnovers in the first half that Valparaiso, which shot 53%, turned into 16 points, to trail 42-36. Northern Iowa, which closed the first half with a 3-pointer, scored the first 17 points of the second half, hitting every shot – six field goals, including three 3-pointers, and two free throws. Valparaiso clawed back, getting within one point on two occasions but in the last minute the Panthers made 7 of 8 free throws for their fourth-straight win. Javon Freeman-Liberty led Valpo with 28.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Omer Yurtseven had 20 points and 13 rebounds, Mac McClung scored 19 points and Georgetown beat No. 25 Creighton 83-80. The Hoyas went on a 13-2 run early in the second half and never looked back as coach Patrick Ewing picked up his first win over the Bluejays in five tries. Georgetown snapped a five-game losing streak to Creighton and beat its second ranked opponent this season. Marcus Zegarowski led the Bluejays with 20 points while Denzel Mahoney added 19 off the bench. Creighton lost for the first time this season when scoring at least 70 points

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs gave Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark huge contracts in the offseason as part of a massive overhaul of their defense. Both have lived up to expectations. Ball-hawking safety Mathieu and star pass rusher Clark have helped the Chiefs return to the AFC title game. The pair are rare success stories for a franchise that has lavished big contracts on a series of players in what turned out to be wastes of money. The Chiefs will face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans benched Marcus Mariota in mid-October. That doesn’t mean the Titans aren’t making sure to tap the quarterback for help during their playoff run. Mariota has been busy in practice mimicking the upcoming quarterback from Tom Brady to Lamar Jackson and now Patrick Mahomes as the Titans prepare to play the Chiefs in the AFC championship game. Mariota also has gotten into each of the past three games, completing a pass in two and going out as a receiver in last week’s win in Baltimore. Mariota says he’ll do whatever he can to help the Titans.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Quinton Rose scored 19 points and Temple used a strong defensive performance to upset No. 16 Wichita State 65-53. Jake Forrester and Monty Scott each chipped in 11 points for the Owls (10-6, 2-3 American Athletic Conference), who on Wednesday night snapped a three-game losing streak while defeating a ranked opponent for the 13th consecutive seasons. Shockers leading scorer Erik Stevenson went scoreless, missing eight shots and five from 3-point range. Tyson Etienne, who entered tops in the conference with 37 3-pointers made, also was scoreless and missed three 3-point tries.

UNDATED (AP) — Derrick Henry has the Tennessee Titans one step away from an unlikely trip to the Super Bowl. They got this far because their running back has been unstoppable. Henry has led the Titans to a pair of upset wins on the road, becoming the first player with two games of 175 yards rushing or more in the same postseason. He rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown in a win at New England in the wild-card game and followed up with a franchise-record 195 yards rushing in Tennessee’s win over No. 1 seed Baltimore in the divisional round.
