Atlantic Softball Defeats Shenendoah 9-1

The Atlantic softball team defeated the Shenendoah Fillies Thursday night 9-1 in six innings. The duo of Sophomore Peyton McLaren and Junior Zoey Kirchhoff split innings in the circle, going scoreless in the last five frames. Junior McKenna Schroeder got on base all four times, including a pair of doubles. Lone Senior McKenna Sonntag ended the game with a walk-0ff two-run home run to left field. Head Coach Terry Hinzmann complimented the way Schroeder has adjusted in different spots in the order.

In the top of the first, Shenendoah capitalized on an early Atlantic error to go ahead 1-0. In each of the first two innings, the Trojans left runners in scoring position and trailed 1-0 after two.

In the third, the bats started to come alive for Atlantic. Schroeder doubled followed by a Sonntag RBI single to tie the game. Later in the inning, Lila Wiederstein drove in a pair with a sneaky single down the left field line. A multi run lead in Atlantic’s back pocket made the pitching transition from McLaren to Kirkhhoff after the fourth much smoother.

McLaren also helped herself out at the plate in the fifth with an RBI triple to score Wiederstein and believes her plate approaches has improved throughout the course of the season.

In the two innings Kirkhhoff pitched, she struck out two and allowed just two baserunners. Sonntag believes everybody gets better with trusted pitchers in the circle.

In the sixth, Schroeder led off with a walk followed up by a two-run home run off the bat of Sonntagg for her first walk-off home run of her career.

The Trojans are set to head to the Fort Dodge Invite Friday, where the competition will be top tier.

Atlantic is currently 16-9 this season and head into the weekend on a six-game win streak.

3 new measles cases reported in eastern Iowa

News

June 19th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Three more people have been diagnosed with measles in eastern Iowa, Johnson County health officials say. The three new cases are household contacts with the initial measles case, an unvaccinated child who was exposed during international travel, identified in Johnson County last week. The new cases include two unvaccinated children and one unvaccinated adult.

Johnson County Public Health officials say they are continuing to monitor individuals who were exposed after the initial case. There have now been six cases of measles identified in Iowa this year. In May, officials identified the first case of the disease in Iowa since 2019. Currently, there is a multistate measles outbreak across the United States. As of June 12, there have been nearly 1,200 confirmed cases of measles in the U.S. this year.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says the vaccine is 97% effective against measles, but only 84% of 2-year-olds in Iowa are vaccinated — well below the 95% needed to prevent outbreaks.

Officials say anyone who has been exposed to a measles case and has symptoms should contact their medical provider or go to an emergency room, but tell them you have been exposed to measles ahead of arriving.

One person is in custody after they “entered the stage area during event activities” Thursday afternoon during the National Speech and Debate Tournament at the EMC Expo Center in Des Moines. According to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department, the male’s “behavior prompted safety concerns and the immediate area was evacuated.”

Authorities say it happened just before 3 p.m. and officers working the event took the person into custody. “No weapons were seen or have been recovered at this time,” according to DMPD. “No injuries have been reported at this time.”  The area was safely cleared and participants were allowed back into the events center before 4 p.m. and the schedule resumed at 5:15 p.m.

It’s the 100th anniversary of the National Speech and Debate Tournament. Organizers expected more than 10,000 people from schools across the United States and around the world to attend the five-day event, which opened Monday and ends Friday.

Shelby Young with the National Speech and Debate Association provided the following statement:

This afternoon, an unidentified attendee entered the stage during the Humorous Interpretation Finals, interrupting the round. The individual has been subdued and removed from the premises. There were no weapons involved, and no threats were made. The hall was evacuated and there are no reported injuries. The rest of the venue has been swept for any potential threats by members of law enforcement. We understand the concerns people have, and we want to assure everyone that this is an isolated incident.

Summer basketball workouts underway at Iowa

Sports

June 19th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Summer workouts are underway at Iowa as a new era of Hawkeye basketball begins under Ben McCollum. The roster is almost entirely new. Redshirt freshman Cooper Koch is the only returning scholarship player returning from a team that finished 17-16 in the final season under former coach Fran McCaffery.

Koch on his decision to remain at Iowa.

Koch says on the court there has been an emphasis on defense but the biggest difference with the new coaching staff is off the court.

Senior forward Tavion Banks is one of six players who played for McCollum at Drake last season. The Bulldogs finished with a school record 31 wins and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Banks says the former Drake players are helping to install McCollum’s style of play.

Banks says he is not surprised so many former Drake players followed McCollum to Iowa.
